Your downloaded Game Pass games usually stay installed, but installation is not ownership. When the paid subscription expires, the console or PC can no longer validate the Game Pass entitlement, so those titles normally stop launching until you renew, buy the game, or use another valid license. Turning off recurring billing does not end access immediately: your subscription continues through the already-paid period.
What changes when Game Pass expires?
Game Pass is a subscription license for a changing catalog, not a purchase of every file you download. The download places game data on your Xbox console or Windows PC, while a separate entitlement check determines whether your account is allowed to play it.
Until the subscription end date, an eligible catalog game can be installed and played under the terms of your plan. After that date, the entitlement check fails unless you have renewed or own the game through another license. The installed files may remain on the drive and continue using storage, but selecting the game can produce a message that you need to renew, purchase the title, or insert an owned disc.
There is no general conversion of a download into a permanent copy. Deleting and reinstalling the game does not create ownership, and leaving the files installed does not preserve the right to launch them.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cancellation is not the same as immediate expiry
Stopping recurring billing only prevents the next automatic charge. It does not normally remove access on the day you change the setting. Your paid period remains active until the end date shown on the subscription, and Game Pass access changes when that period ends.
If you cancel before the next charge
- Open the Microsoft account area that lists your subscriptions and confirm the Game Pass end date.
- Use the remaining paid time normally; downloaded catalog games should continue to follow the active plan until that date, unless a particular title leaves the catalog earlier.
- Before the end date, decide whether to renew, purchase a frequently played title, or let the subscription lapse.
If you let the subscription expire
Expect subscription-only games to become unavailable at the end of the paid term. The files are not necessarily erased automatically, so you may see a locked or unplayable installation rather than a fresh download prompt. You can uninstall those files later if you need the storage.
What happens to your save data?
Expiry and save deletion are separate events. For games using the applicable Xbox save system, progress is associated with your account or gamertag rather than with an active Game Pass payment. Xbox automatic cloud saves can therefore make progress available when you return after renewing or buying the game.

“When you play an XBOX Play Anywhere game, your game progress is saved on with your gamertag so you can pick up where you left on when you log into another device.”
That capability applies only to participating Play Anywhere games and compatible Xbox and Windows devices. A game that does not use the relevant Xbox save service can behave differently, particularly if it relies on a platform-specific or local save method. Do not assume that every title supports cross-device continuation simply because it appears in Game Pass.
Before your access ends
- Connect the console or PC to the internet and sign in to the same account used to play the game, giving pending cloud synchronization a chance to finish.
- Record the gamertag and account you used; opening the game under a different account can make a valid save appear to be missing.
- For a title you may buy later, check whether it supports Xbox Play Anywhere if moving between Xbox and Windows matters to you.
When you return later
Renew the subscription or sign in with the account that owns a purchase, then launch the same game on a supported device. If the title and account use cloud saves, the synchronized progress should be available. A missing save can instead indicate a different account, an unsupported save system, an incomplete synchronization, or a platform-specific limitation; expiry alone does not prove that the save was erased.

How to regain access to an installed game
Renew Game Pass
Renewing restores subscription entitlement for games that are still included in your plan, region, and platform. After the account shows an active subscription, sign in on the console or PC and try the installed game again. Renewal does not restore a title that has already left the Game Pass catalog.

Buy the game digitally
You can purchase a title through its Microsoft Store listing. A purchase license is different from a Game Pass rental entitlement, so you do not need to keep an active subscription to play a game you own digitally, subject to the store license and platform requirements.
Microsoft-hosted guidance makes the distinction explicit: buying the game from its store page means you do not need to buy it again, while merely downloading it from Game Pass is a rental-style access right that ends with the subscription. A Game Pass download and a later purchase may use the same installed files, allowing you to avoid downloading the entire game again, although the store may still verify ownership or install an update.
Use a physical disc on a supported console
A disc copy is another ownership route for compatible Xbox consoles. Insert the disc and use the console’s disc license to launch the installed game. This option does not apply to Windows PCs and does not make a disc-based license portable to devices that lack a disc drive.

Compare the choice over the period you expect to play, not only the next launch attempt. The right answer depends on whether you want one game or a wider catalog and whether subscription benefits matter to you.

If you regularly play several catalog games, renewal can provide more value during the months you use them. If you mainly return to one title for a long period, compare the cumulative subscription cost with that game’s purchase price and the value of benefits you would otherwise lose.
Games can become unavailable before your subscription ends
A catalog removal is a separate access-ending event. A game can leave Game Pass while your subscription is still active; when that happens, the subscription entitlement no longer covers that title after its removal date. Keeping the game installed does not override the catalog change.
Catalog titles, included features, and availability vary by plan, region, platform, and time. A title shown for one plan or country may not be offered on another, and a console listing may not imply a Windows entitlement. Check the current listing for the exact account, device, and plan before assuming that renewal will restore a particular game.

Play Anywhere is title-specific
Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating digital games. Where supported, one purchase or eligible entitlement can provide play on compatible Xbox and Windows devices with progress tied to the gamertag. A game without the Play Anywhere designation may require a separate platform license even when its saves synchronize through another Xbox service.

Subscription benefits that end with an inactive plan
For an Ultimate subscription, inactivity affects more than downloaded catalog games. Subscription-linked benefits such as cloud gaming, perks, and included partner services are also removed while the subscription is inactive. A digital game you purchased separately remains governed by its purchase license, but it does not keep those subscription benefits alive.
Multiplayer and other included features can also depend on the specific plan, platform, and game. Treat each benefit as part of the plan’s current terms rather than as a permanent consequence of having downloaded a title once.
Practical checklist for an expiring subscription
- Find the end date. Check the subscription entry on the Microsoft account used on the console or PC. Distinguish an end-of-billing date from the day you turned off recurring billing.
- List the games you care about. For each one, verify that it is still in the catalog and available on your plan and platform.
- Protect your progress. Play while signed in to the correct gamertag and allow cloud synchronization to complete, especially for a Play Anywhere title.
- Choose a license. Renew for catalog breadth, buy the individual game for continuing digital access, or use a compatible disc copy.
- Keep or remove the files deliberately. Leaving an inaccessible installation can save a future download if you regain a license, but uninstalling it recovers storage and does not affect a cloud save.
Troubleshooting after expiry
The game is installed but asks you to subscribe
Confirm that the subscription has actually renewed, that you are signed in with the account that owns it, and that the game remains in the catalog for your plan and region. If all three are true, restart the game after the account status updates. An installed file alone cannot satisfy the license check.

Use the account that made the purchase and open the game’s Microsoft Store page to confirm that the purchase is recognized. A purchase on one account does not automatically grant another account the same license. On a disc-based console, insert the disc and wait for the console to recognize it.
Your save is not visible
Check the gamertag first, then allow the device to connect and synchronize. Verify whether the title supports the Xbox save system or Play Anywhere. If it uses local or platform-specific saves, the progress may not be available on another device even though the original installation remains.
The title disappeared while you were still subscribed
Check the game’s current catalog status rather than repeatedly reinstalling it. Catalog removal ends the Game Pass entitlement for that title; renewal cannot restore a game that is no longer included. Buying it, using a supported disc, or waiting for a possible future catalog return are separate options.
Bottom line
Game Pass downloads generally remain on your console or PC after cancellation, but the right to play them follows the subscription’s entitlement check. Your paid access lasts until the billing period ends, saves supported by Xbox services can remain tied to your gamertag, and a renewal, digital purchase, or compatible disc supplies the license needed to play again. Always check the title’s current catalog status and the plan, region, and platform attached to your account.
