If you mean Windows 7 System Restore, Microsoft says that in its documented account sign-in recovery scenario, personal documents are not lost. Programs may need to be reinstalled, and some personal settings may need to be reset. But “restore a profile” can also mean transferring files with Windows Easy Transfer or loading a roaming profile from a server—and each works differently.
First identify which kind of restore you used
System Restore, Windows Easy Transfer, and a roaming profile do not restore the same things. The distinction matters because getting your documents back does not necessarily restore the entire Windows profile or every installed application.
| Operation | What it does | What happens to files and settings |
|---|---|---|
| System Restore | Returns system state to a restore point. | In Microsoft’s documented Windows 7 SP1 sign-in recovery scenario, personal documents are not lost; programs may need reinstalling and some personal settings may need resetting. |
| Windows Easy Transfer | Moves selected user files and program settings to another computer. | Transfers selected items, not installed program files, fonts, or drivers. |
| Roaming profile | Uses a profile stored on a server and copied to a computer at sign-in. | When configured, the server-held profile is copied to a replacement computer at first logon and synchronized at sign-out. |
If you used System Restore
Microsoft’s Windows 7 Service Pack 1 support article describes using System Restore when a user cannot sign in, returning the computer to a restore point from when sign-in worked. Microsoft says, “You will not lose any personal documents. However, you may have to reinstall programs. You may also have to reset some personal settings.” See Microsoft’s System Restore sign-in recovery guidance.
The restore point needs to be from a time when logon worked. This is a system-state recovery method for an account-access problem; the guidance does not promise that System Restore will rebuild a deleted profile folder or restore every account’s profile contents.

If you used Windows Easy Transfer
Windows Easy Transfer lets you select one or more user profiles and move data and program settings. It can use a network, removable storage, or a dedicated Easy Transfer cable. A regular USB cable is not the specified cable method. With removable storage, an external hard drive or USB flash drive can hold the transfer file.
Easy Transfer does not move installed program files, fonts, or drivers. Install programs on the destination computer, and separately install any custom fonts or updated drivers you need. The transfer is of selected files and settings, not a complete copy of the installed Windows environment. Microsoft explains the process and limitations in its Windows Easy Transfer instructions.

What a Windows user profile contains
A profile is more than the visible files in Documents or on the Desktop. Microsoft describes two main parts:
- Registry hive: The per-user
NTuser.datfile is mapped toHKEY_CURRENT_USERwhen the user signs in. It holds registry-based preferences and configuration. - Profile folders: These contain per-user data and configuration files. Desktop, Start menu, and Documents use profile folders.
Windows creates a local profile the first time a user signs in and maintains the user’s work-environment settings there, as described in Microsoft’s About User Profiles documentation. Copying visible folders can recover personal files without bringing back every Windows or application preference.

If your account uses a roaming profile
A roaming profile is stored on a server share rather than being only a local profile on one PC. For an account configured this way, Windows downloads the server copy to a computer on the network and synchronizes it when the user signs out. On a replacement computer, Microsoft describes the server copy being copied to that computer at first logon. This applies only when the account and network are configured for roaming profiles; an ordinary local Windows 7 account does not work this way. See Microsoft’s roaming user profiles documentation.

- If you selected a System Restore point, check whether you can sign in, then verify your documents and personal settings. Be prepared to reinstall programs if needed.
- If you imported a Windows Easy Transfer file, confirm which items were selected and transferred; install applications, fonts, or drivers separately where required.
- If you expected a roaming profile, confirm that the account is actually configured to use one and that the computer can reach the network share.
A backup product or manual profile-repair procedure may behave differently from these documented operations; the results depend on what that product saved or what was copied.
