You normally do not lose a claimed Xbox PC game when you reset Windows 11 or move to another computer. A reset removes the local installation, while a replacement PC starts without the game files. The digital entitlement usually remains attached to the Microsoft/Xbox account that claimed or purchased the game.
After signing in with that same account, reinstall the title from the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. Whether the same entitlement also covers an Xbox console, and whether your saved progress returns, depends on the game’s platform designation and save-system support.
What a Windows 11 reset actually removes
A Windows 11 reset reinstalls the operating system and removes applications and their local game files. Depending on the reset option, personal files may also be removed. None of those actions normally cancels a digital game entitlement stored on Microsoft’s account systems.
Think of the game as having two separate parts:
- Entitlement: the account record showing that you bought, redeemed or otherwise received access to the title.
- Installation and saves: files stored on the old PC’s drive, plus any progress synchronized to a supported cloud service.
The reset destroys or removes the second part on that computer; it does not normally erase the first. A replacement PC has the same result: you must download the files again, but you should not need to purchase the same entitlement again.

The Microsoft account used in the Xbox app is important, but so is the account used by Microsoft Store. If either app is signed into a different account, a game can appear to be missing even though the entitlement still exists.
First identify what “claimed” means for your game
Recovery depends on how access was obtained and where the title was sold. Use this distinction before troubleshooting an installation problem.

A game can also have different console and PC products. Owning the console edition does not by itself prove that the Windows version is included. The listing’s platform information and Xbox Play Anywhere designation are the decisive checks.
How Xbox Play Anywhere changes the answer
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s cross-device entitlement for supported digital games. Xbox states that when you own a digital game with this designation through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, it can be played on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Signing in to the Xbox/Microsoft account makes the game available to download.
This means a Play Anywhere title normally provides the clearest path from an Xbox purchase to a replacement Windows PC. The account proves ownership, and the service presents the PC edition for installation. The game still has to support your Windows version, hardware and region.

If the title does not carry the Play Anywhere label, separate platform rules apply. A console-only entitlement may not include a PC copy, and a PC purchase may not include the console edition. Do not infer cross-device rights merely because the title appears in both stores; check the product listing for the explicit designation.
Reinstall a claimed game after resetting Windows 11
Use this sequence before considering another purchase.

The Windows sign-in account does not have to be the only account on the machine, but using the account that owns the game reduces confusion.
- Open Microsoft Store and verify its account. Select the profile icon, confirm the email address, then open the library or owned-products area. If it shows a different address, sign out and use the account that redeemed or purchased the game.
- Open the Xbox app for Windows and verify the same account. The profile menu should show the account associated with the entitlement. A mismatch between the Store and Xbox app can prevent the install button from appearing.
- Search for the exact title. Use the library first; if it is not listed there, search the product page. Choose Install or Download, not a purchase option. Microsoft describes Xbox and Windows Store digital purchases as downloadable and reinstallable.
- Select an available drive and allow the Xbox app to install its required services. A fresh Windows installation may need the Xbox app, Gaming Services and Store updates before a game can start downloading.
- Wait for the installation and updates to finish. Do not launch the game while the app is still applying updates or synchronizing account data.
- Allow cloud-save synchronization before creating a new save. If the title supports cloud saves, the first launch may download progress associated with your account. Starting a new game immediately can create a conflict or overwrite the local state you expected to recover.
If the game is missing from the library
Absence from the library is usually an account, platform or availability issue rather than proof that the reset erased ownership. Work through these checks in order.
Check the account and purchase history
Compare the email address in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and your Microsoft account order history. For a promotional claim, check redemption history as well. A family member’s account, an old email address or a second Microsoft account can contain the entitlement while the newly reset PC is using another one.
Confirm that a PC version exists for your entitlement
Open the title’s current product listing and look for Windows PC availability and the Xbox Play Anywhere label. If the listing identifies only an Xbox console edition, the console entitlement may not include a Windows copy. If it is a PC game from another launcher, reinstall it through that launcher instead of the Xbox app.

Check region and catalog status
Availability can differ by region. A product may also be delisted, replaced by another edition or unavailable on your account’s current storefront. For Game Pass, verify both that the subscription is active and that the title is still in the catalog. Subscription access is not the same as a permanent purchase.

Install pending Windows updates, then update Microsoft Store and the Xbox app. If the title still does not appear, use Windows Settings to repair or reset the affected app and sign in again. Repairing the app can refresh its local cache; it does not change the account’s ownership record.
Check services and storage
Fresh installations sometimes lack the Gaming Services component or have a drive that is full, disconnected or formatted in a way the app cannot use. Resolve the service or storage error shown by the installer, then retry from the library rather than purchasing a second copy.
Will your saves transfer to the replacement PC?
Save recovery is separate from game ownership. A title can reinstall successfully while its old progress remains unavailable.
Cloud saves and cross-progression
Supported Xbox Play Anywhere games can use cloud game saves and cross-progression. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes using a single TitleID for Xbox console and PC cloud saves so progress can continue across screens. For one of these titles, sign in with the same account, let synchronization complete and use the same edition or profile on the new PC.

Local-only saves
Some games store progress only in a local folder. A Windows reset that removes the old installation can remove those files, and a replacement PC cannot retrieve them from Microsoft’s account services if the game never uploaded them. Recovery then requires a backup made before the reset or a backup mechanism provided by the game’s developer.
Different editions and profiles
Cloud data may be tied to a particular account, edition or platform. Installing a different edition, signing into a different Xbox profile or launching through another storefront can make a valid save appear absent. Confirm the account and edition before assuming the save is lost.
Game Pass is access, not permanent ownership
If “claimed” means you installed a game through Game Pass, the reset does not convert that access into ownership. You can reinstall while the subscription is active and the title remains in the catalog, but access can end when the plan expires or the game is removed.
Buying the game creates a separate ownership entitlement. Before resetting or replacing the PC, check the account’s order history and the title’s current product page so you know whether you own it outright or are relying on subscription access. This distinction also explains why a previously installed title might show a purchase prompt after the reset.

A short preparation checklist reduces the risk of losing local progress or account information.

- Record the Microsoft/Xbox email address that owns or redeemed the game.
- Check the Xbox app and Microsoft Store are using that account.
- Review order or redemption history for titles you intend to reinstall.
- Look at each game’s listing for Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud-save support.
- Back up local save folders if the developer documents them and cloud support is unclear.
- Allow the Xbox app to finish any pending cloud synchronization before starting the reset.
- Note the old game’s edition, add-ons and launcher so you reinstall the matching product.
Common situations and the correct expectation
“I reset Windows and the game icon disappeared.”
That is expected: the reset removed the local installation. Sign in to the owning account and reinstall from the Xbox app or Microsoft Store.
“I bought the game on Xbox and now have a new Windows 11 PC.”
Check for Xbox Play Anywhere. If the digital title supports it, the same account should provide the Windows version without another purchase. Without that designation, verify whether a separate PC entitlement is required.
“The game installs, but my progress is gone.”
Confirm cloud-save support, account identity and edition. If the title used local-only saves and the old drive was erased, only a backup or the developer’s recovery process can restore progress.
“The Xbox app asks me to buy it again.”
Stop before purchasing. Check the Microsoft Store account, Xbox account, order history, redemption history, region and whether your previous access was Game Pass. A purchase prompt often reflects a mismatch or expired catalog access.
“I used a different launcher before the reset.”
Reinstall and sign into the original storefront or publisher launcher. An Xbox or Microsoft account record does not automatically replace an entitlement held elsewhere.
Bottom line for a reset or replacement PC
The Windows installation is temporary; the account entitlement is what normally persists. Use the exact Microsoft/Xbox account that claimed the game, reinstall it through the correct storefront, and check Xbox Play Anywhere when moving between console and PC. Treat saved progress as a separate question: cloud-enabled titles can resume across devices, while local-only saves require a backup from the old installation.
