Excavation is the beginning of an artifact’s professional life, not the end. After an object is removed from the ground, archaeologists record its exact context, transport it safely, assess whether excavation has made it vulnerable, and choose material-specific cleaning or conservation. The object and its records then enter laboratory analysis and long-term curation. Some finds are exhibited or described in publications; many remain in a repository so they can be studied again.
There is no single destination for every find. The treatment of a ceramic sherd differs from the treatment of waterlogged wood, corroding metal, fragile glass, human remains or culturally affiliated items. Land ownership, permits, national and local law, and repatriation rules determine who has custody and what can happen next.
The post-excavation process at a glance
Professional archaeology treats an artifact as part of an assemblage and a documented place, not as an isolated souvenir. The usual sequence is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Record the object and preserve its provenience and associations.
- Move it under conditions that limit further damage.
- Assess, clean selectively and stabilize it when necessary.
- Analyze the object, associated samples and the wider assemblage.
- Package, catalogue and store the collection in a suitable repository.
- Publish interpretations, teach with the material or select some objects for display.
- Apply the law and permit terms governing custody, access, transfer or repatriation.
These stages overlap. Conservation decisions can affect scientific testing, and cataloguing continues while analysis and reporting proceed. The Canadian Conservation Institute summarizes the long time scale: “The care of archaeological objects begins with decisions made in the field and extends for decades or centuries after the objects enter a collection in a museum or repository.”

1. Archaeologists record the find and its context
Before an object is moved, the team records where it came from, its layer or feature, its position and its relationship to nearby materials. Labels, photographs, drawings, measurements and field notes connect the physical object to that information. The record may also include soil observations, samples, conservation notes and the identities of associated finds.
Context is evidence. A bead found in a burial, a workshop floor or a refuse deposit can support very different interpretations even if the bead itself looks identical. Removing an object without preserving its provenience can destroy information that cannot be recovered in a laboratory.
Repositories therefore curate more than objects. The City of Alexandria describes collections that include field records, catalogues and supporting documentation alongside recovered materials. A box of artifacts without its site records is a much weaker research resource than a fully documented collection.

Burial can protect an object by limiting oxygen, light, movement and biological activity. Excavation changes that environment immediately. Exposure to air, heat, fluctuating humidity or salts can accelerate deterioration, so a find may need support, controlled moisture, shading or rapid delivery to a conservation laboratory.
Very fragile materials may be excavated as a block rather than lifted piece by piece. Conservators can then stabilize the block in a controlled setting and expose its contents gradually. This is especially important when an object is cracked, mineralized, waterlogged or still attached to surrounding material.
There is no safe universal instruction such as “wash and dry everything.” The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that wet, salt-contaminated metals and unstable glass can be damaged by drying. Waterlogged wood, leather and textile fibers may also collapse or distort if their moisture is changed abruptly.

3. Cleaning and conservation depend on material
Cleaning removes soil only when doing so is safe and useful. Conservation aims to stabilize an object and preserve information, not to make every item look new. A treatment is selected after examining the material, condition, salts, coatings, residues and planned research.
| Find or condition | Typical professional concern | Why treatment cannot be standardized |
|---|---|---|
| Stable ceramic | Loose soil may be removed and fragments joined after documentation. | Residues, pigments or use-related deposits may be evidence that should not be scrubbed away. |
| Glass | Surface instability and weathering may require controlled handling and environment. | Some glass is chemically unstable; moisture changes can worsen deterioration. |
| Metal | Corrosion, salts and chlorides are assessed before any drying or cleaning. | Wet, salt-contaminated metal can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to air. |
| Waterlogged wood, leather or cloth | Moisture is maintained while conservators plan stabilization. | Drying can cause shrinkage, cracking, collapse or irreversible distortion. |
| Bone and human remains | Handling, documentation and examination must respect condition and legal or cultural requirements. | Human remains and culturally sensitive materials are not ordinary display objects. |
Alexandria’s public description gives examples rather than a universal recipe: some ceramics, glass and bone may be washed in plain water, while some metals are dry-brushed. Waterlogged wood, leather and cloth are kept under different conditions. Those examples illustrate why a trained conservator must decide treatment for each material and condition.
4. Laboratory analysis adds information beyond appearance
Analysis can identify a material, establish a date range, reconstruct manufacturing methods or compare an object with other finds from the site. Researchers may examine residues, pigments, tool marks, wear, botanical remains, animal species, human health indicators, nutrition or DNA, depending on the object and the questions being asked.
Associated samples can be as important as the visible artifact. Sediment, charcoal, fibers, soil chemistry or residues may provide evidence about activity at the site. Sampling is planned carefully because removing material is irreversible. The Canadian Conservation Institute cautions that contamination introduced during excavation, packing or treatment can interfere with later scientific results.
Laboratory work is not always a one-time event. New dating methods, imaging techniques or comparative collections can make an old assemblage useful for questions that were not considered when it was excavated. Keeping the object, samples and documentation together preserves those possibilities.
5. Cataloguing and long-term storage
After assessment and treatment, each item or lot receives a catalogue record and a stable storage location. A database may record the site, context, material, dimensions, condition, conservation history, photographs, analytical results, restrictions and current shelf position. Barcodes or other identifiers help staff locate an item without breaking the chain of documentation.

Storage normally means a museum, university, government facility or other approved repository rather than an archaeologist’s personal collection. Appropriate boxes, trays, padding and labels prevent abrasion and mixing. Climate-stable rooms, security, pest monitoring, environmental checks and digital-record maintenance are part of the work.
The scale can be substantial. The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that a relatively small site can produce thousands of objects, while a large excavation lasting several years can generate hundreds of thousands or even millions. Storage planning therefore belongs in project design, not as an afterthought once fieldwork ends.
For federally owned or administered archaeological collections in the United States, the National Park Service’s 36 CFR 79 framework addresses curation requirements. The exact repository and obligations depend on the land manager, permit and applicable law.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Reporting, publication and public interpretation
Archaeologists turn catalogues and analyses into site reports, specialist studies, books, lectures, public events, school programs and museum exhibitions. A display may show only a small, representative selection. Space, conservation limits, cultural restrictions and the need to keep objects available for research all affect what is exhibited.
Analysis and reporting can continue for years after excavation. The City of Alexandria estimates at least 20 hours of laboratory and other work for every hour spent excavating in its urban archaeology program. That figure is an Alexandria planning estimate, not a universal archaeological ratio. Alexandria also notes that study may continue for years.
An object can therefore be scientifically important without ever appearing in a gallery. A carefully stored sherd, sample or fragment may answer a future question more effectively than a visually impressive object placed on permanent display.

Where artifacts go after laboratory work
Most finds follow one of several legitimate paths. These outcomes can occur at different times, and one object may move between them:
- Repository storage: The common outcome is controlled storage with the site records and catalogue.
- Research access: Qualified researchers may request study visits, images, samples or loans under repository rules.
- Exhibition or teaching: Selected objects may be displayed or used in supervised educational programs.
- Publication: Results may appear in technical reports, books, databases or public interpretation.
- Transfer or repatriation: A law, permit condition, land manager or cultural-affiliation process may require a change in custody or return.
“Stored” does not mean forgotten. Collections are maintained so that future researchers can re-examine them, compare them with new discoveries and test improved methods.
Do archaeologists keep or sell excavated artifacts?
In professional archaeology, excavators generally do not personally own or sell finds. Ownership and custody are assigned by the country, state, land manager, permit, repository agreement and object category. The Archaeological Institute of America states that remains generally belong to the country where they are found, but that principle does not answer every legal situation worldwide.
Unauthorized removal, private sale or export can violate national law, land rules or permit terms and can permanently separate an object from its context. A legitimate project records where the material goes and who is responsible for its care.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why jurisdiction and cultural affiliation matter
There is no single global disposition procedure. A find from private land, municipal land, national park, federal land or Indigenous or Tribal land may be subject to different rules. Permit conditions can specify the repository, reporting deadline, conservation standard and limits on public access.
United States federal and Tribal contexts
U.S. federal laws and regulations govern particular categories of archaeological collections. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA, provides processes involving covered human remains and cultural items, including consultation and repatriation responsibilities for qualifying institutions and agencies. The National Park Service publishes separate guidance on disposition of human remains and cultural items. Whether a specific object is covered depends on the facts, legal definitions and cultural-affiliation evidence.

Human remains in museums
Human remains require respectful handling, careful documentation and a process appropriate to the jurisdiction and community connections involved. UK guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport addresses care of human remains in museums in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. That guidance is not a worldwide rule, and it should not be applied to a U.S. federal or Tribal case without considering the governing law.
International principles
UNESCO’s 1956 recommendation on international principles applicable to archaeological excavations sets out broad principles for excavation and protection, but it does not replace current national legislation, permit terms or agreements with communities. For a real find, the controlling documents are the applicable law, land manager’s instructions, excavation permit and repository requirements.
What happens when an artifact is culturally sensitive?
Some objects have continuing religious, ceremonial or community significance. Consultation may affect whether an item is photographed, sampled, displayed, loaned or made available to the public. Human remains, funerary objects and sacred items can require restricted access, special storage or repatriation rather than ordinary exhibition.
Recommended Free Tools
Cultural affiliation is established through the relevant legal and scholarly process, which may include oral histories, ethnography, archaeology, geography and documentation. The appropriate outcome is determined with the communities and authorities recognized by the governing framework, not by an excavator’s personal preference.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Everything goes on display.” Most collections are stored; exhibition is selective.
- “Every artifact is washed immediately.” Water, drying and brushing can damage particular materials or erase residues.
- “Finding it means owning it.” Custody follows law, land status, permits and repository agreements.
- “The excavation report ends the work.” Analysis, conservation and reinterpretation can continue for years.
- “The object is all that matters.” Provenience, field notes, samples and catalogue data are part of the evidence.
How a future researcher can use the collection
A later researcher usually starts with the catalogue and site archive, identifies the relevant context, requests access from the repository and follows handling or sampling rules. They may compare the object with material from other sites, apply a newer analytical technique or revisit an earlier interpretation. Because the collection retains its records and associations, the new study can build on the original excavation rather than treating the artifact as an isolated curiosity.
The practical result is a long-term public and scholarly resource: an excavated object can support research, education and community decision-making long after the trench has been backfilled.
