Short answer: A sale would not automatically move every Albertsons prescription or guarantee that refills continue unchanged. The result would depend on whether the pharmacy stays open, which licensed operator takes over, where prescription records are held, whether your insurer includes the new operator, and the law in your state. The Kroger-Albertsons transaction that raised many of these questions was blocked in December 2024 and then terminated; any later sale would be a separate event with its own notices and procedures.
What happened to the Kroger-Albertsons transaction?
Many pharmacy customers began asking about prescription continuity because of the proposed $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons by Kroger. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said the deal would have combined more than 5,000 stores and about 4,000 retail pharmacies in 48 states. That transaction did not close.
A federal court blocked the deal
On December 10, 2024, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon granted the FTC’s request for a preliminary injunction. FTC Bureau of Competition Director Henry Liu described the decision as “a major victory for the American people,” saying the agency and state partners had successfully blocked the acquisition.

The merger agreement was terminated
Albertsons announced that it terminated the merger agreement after the injunctions. An FTC chair statement dated January 2, 2025 records that the parties announced abandonment on December 11, 2024. The FTC had also criticized the proposed divestiture to another operator as a “hodgepodge of unconnected stores, banners, brands, and other assets,” arguing that it would not adequately replace the competition lost through the merger.
Those events describe the 2024 transaction only. They do not establish that Albertsons, a particular store, or an individual pharmacy cannot be sold in a later transaction.

Why a future sale would not automatically transfer every prescription
“Albertsons was sold” would not, by itself, answer what happens to your medication. A buyer could keep the pharmacy open under the Albertsons name, rebrand it, move operations to another licensed pharmacy, or close the location. Each choice changes who controls the patient profile and which dispensing system processes refills.

Federal rules provide transfer mechanisms for certain prescriptions, but they do not create one nationwide rule that every prescription follows automatically after an ownership change. State pharmacy law, the transaction documents, the licensed operator and the insurer can all affect the result.
What happens to ordinary, noncontrolled prescriptions?
For a noncontrolled drug, the practical question is whether the prescription record and refill authorization remain usable in the successor’s system. Ask the affected pharmacy to confirm each item rather than assuming that an unchanged store sign means unchanged records.
- The prescription number and medication name.
- The number of refills remaining and the expiration date of the prescription.
- The prescriber’s name and contact information on file.
- Whether the patient profile and allergy information will be retained.
- Whether the pharmacy’s billing profile still contains your insurance or Medicare Part D details.
If the operator is changing computer systems, the pharmacist may migrate the profile internally. If the location is closing, the pharmacist can explain which records will be released and whether the receiving pharmacy must request them. A transfer request is usually initiated by the pharmacy you select, but the exact process and permitted records depend on state law and the medication involved.

When a new prescription may be needed
A transfer may not solve every problem. A prescription could be expired, have no refills left, be subject to a state-specific limitation, or be unavailable to the receiving pharmacy because of stock or supplier restrictions. In those situations, contact the prescriber promptly. Do not wait until the last dose if the pharmacy tells you that a new prescription or clarification is required.
How controlled-substance prescriptions are handled
Controlled substances have additional federal and state requirements. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) states that, at a patient’s request, a DEA-registered retail pharmacy may transfer an electronic prescription for a Schedule II-V controlled substance to another DEA-registered retail pharmacy when state law permits.

The DEA’s rule allows a one-time, patient-requested electronic transfer between two DEA-registered retail pharmacies. The prescription must remain electronic and its contents cannot be altered. The transfer must be communicated directly between licensed pharmacists, and both pharmacies must document the transaction in their records. A pharmacy technician or an informal message from a patient cannot replace the required pharmacist-to-pharmacist communication.
This rule does not guarantee that a transfer will be available in every state or for every circumstance. Before relying on it, ask both pharmacies whether they are DEA-registered retail pharmacies and whether your state permits the requested transfer. The receiving pharmacy must also be able to dispense the medication under its own inventory, policy and legal obligations.

Schedule III-V refills
Federal regulation permits transfer of a Schedule III-V prescription for refill purposes only when applicable state or other law allows it. Required pharmacist records still apply. A transfer of a remaining refill is different from transferring a prescription with no refills left; if no refill remains, the prescriber may need to issue a new prescription.
What patients should have ready
- The medication name, strength, dosage form and prescription number, if available.
- The original pharmacy’s name and telephone number.
- The prescriber’s name and office contact information.
- The date the next dose or refill will be needed.
- Any state-specific identification or controlled-substance requirements the receiving pharmacy requests.
Will your insurance still work after a sale?
Insurance participation is not determined solely by ownership. A buyer may have a different contract with your pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), and a store that was in-network before a sale may be out-of-network afterward. The same issue can arise if the pharmacy is moved to another location or operated under a different billing entity.
Call the member-services number on your insurance card or use the plan’s current pharmacy directory. Ask whether the successor pharmacy’s exact address and billing entity are in-network for your plan and whether your medication has a preferred-pharmacy requirement. For Medicare Part D, verify the location in the plan’s current directory rather than relying on an old directory or a website cached before the ownership change.
Also ask the pharmacist to run a claim before the prescription is transferred when possible. A claim rejection can result from network status, an early-refill rule, prior authorization, quantity limits or a changed billing identifier—not necessarily from a missing prescription record. If the price changes, ask the insurer which in-network pharmacies can fill the same prescription and whether your prescriber must submit a new authorization.

Patient checklist before the next refill
- Call early. Contact the affected Albertsons pharmacy, or a successor pharmacy operating at the same location, before your next refill is due. Use the phone number on your current prescription label and confirm that it still reaches the correct operator.
- Identify the operator. Ask which company or licensed pharmacy will operate the location, the effective date, and whether the pharmacy will remain open during the change.
- Locate your records. Ask where your patient profile and prescription records will be maintained and whether the prescription number, remaining refills and prescriber information will stay active.
- Check insurance. Confirm the new operator and exact address are in-network with your prescription plan. Ask the pharmacy to test-bill the prescription if timing permits.
- Select a backup pharmacy. If the location is closing or the new operator is unsuitable, choose a receiving pharmacy based on network status, stock, hours and distance.
- Request the transfer. Give the receiving pharmacist the original pharmacy, prescriber and medication details. For a controlled substance, ask whether both pharmacies meet DEA and state-law requirements.
- Confirm the result. Obtain written or electronic confirmation of the transfer, the next-fill date and any remaining refills. Keep it with your medication records.
- Contact the prescriber if necessary. Ask the prescriber for a new prescription or authorization if the transfer is prohibited, the prescription has expired, no refills remain, or the receiving pharmacy cannot dispense it.
How to choose a replacement pharmacy
The nearest store is not always the most practical replacement. Compare the factors that affect whether you can obtain the medication on time.

For a controlled substance, confirm stock discreetly with the pharmacist and understand that inventory limits or state rules may prevent an immediate fill even after a lawful transfer.
If the pharmacy closes before your transfer is complete
The phone number no longer works
Use the store’s posted closure notice, the successor’s customer-service channel or your prescriber’s office to identify the records custodian. Tell the receiving pharmacist that the original location is closed and ask what documentation is needed to request the record.
The receiving pharmacy says it cannot find the prescription
Ask the original or successor operator to verify the prescription number, remaining refills and prescriber details. A new computer system may use a different internal number. If the prescription is expired or has no refills, contact the prescriber rather than asking the pharmacy to recreate authorization it no longer has.

The claim rejects at the new pharmacy
Request the rejection reason and call your insurer or PBM. Confirm the billing entity, network status, prior authorization and refill-too-soon rules. If the pharmacy is out-of-network, ask the plan for an in-network alternative before paying a cash price.
A controlled-substance transfer is refused
Ask whether the refusal is based on DEA registration, state law, the prescription’s electronic format, a pharmacy policy or the lack of a remaining refill. Do not ask a pharmacy to alter the prescription. Contact the prescriber if a new prescription is legally required.

What is not known until a specific sale is announced
There is no single nationwide deadline requiring every Albertsons pharmacy sale to notify patients. The cited federal rules also do not promise that every refill transfers automatically or determine whether a future buyer will be in-network with your insurer. Those answers require the affected state, store, buyer, licensed operator, insurer and transaction-specific notices.
Ownership change alone therefore is not a reason to stop medication or assume that a refill has been canceled. It is a reason to verify the operator, records, insurance and transfer path before the next dose is due.
