The researchers combined mitochondrial immunoprecipitation, density-gradient purification, mass spectrometry, protein-correlation profiling and microscopy to build a high-confidence mitochondrial protein inventory called AcMitoCarta. The Broad Institute reports that it contains 1,122 proteins, including 381 without readily identifiable homologs in human and yeast mitochondria.
