If you change or reset a YouTube stream key, update the encoder with the new key and verify that YouTube is receiving the feed. YouTube’s public instructions do not establish whether resetting a key immediately disconnects an encoder that is already live, so uninterrupted playback is not guaranteed—or ruled out. For a 24/7 nature stream, plan a monitored update rather than assuming either outcome.
What the stream key does
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell an encoder where to send its feed and let YouTube accept it. YouTube Help compares them to “your YouTube stream’s password and address”: YouTube’s stream-key instructions.
The encoder sends a feed to YouTube, while the associated broadcast is the event viewers watch. YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats these as separate resources: a liveStream represents the transmitted feed, and a liveBroadcast represents the broadcast. The API’s stream statuses include active (receiving data), inactive (not receiving data), ready, and error. These distinctions help identify what to check, but the API documentation does not explain what a key reset does to an already-established connection: Live Streams API and Live Broadcasts API.
Will changing the key stop a stream that is already live?
YouTube’s public guidance explains how to reset a key and update encoder software, but does not say whether resetting the key immediately terminates a feed that is already connected. The exact effect and timing are therefore unconfirmed. Do not promise that the picture will stop immediately, or that it will keep running without interruption.

There is a practical distinction between an encoder already sending a feed and a later attempt to start or reconnect. YouTube instructs creators to copy the newly generated key after a reset and update the encoder. Do not assume the old saved key will still work for a future start or reconnect.
How to change the key with the least uncertainty
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate the stream key for the stream. You need channel-owner or manager access to reset it.
- Reset the key only when you can monitor the stream. YouTube’s instructions do not confirm the impact on an active ingest, so avoid treating a reset during an unattended 24/7 run as risk-free.
- Copy the newly generated key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s reset procedure calls for updating the encoder with this new value.
- Replace the saved key in the encoder configuration. Keep the YouTube Live server URL configured as well; the encoder uses the server URL and key to send the feed. Exact menu names vary by encoder. YouTube’s setup guide covers entering these values: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Start or restart the encoder if needed, then verify reception. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health before relying on the feed. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and monitoring stream quality.
- If the encoder will not start, retrieve the current key again from Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder. That is YouTube’s documented troubleshooting path: Fix streaming issues.
What to check if the nature stream has a problem
- The encoder reports an authentication or start error: compare its configured key with the current key in Live Control Room. Replace an old value with the new key, then try starting the encoder again.
- The encoder says it is sending, but YouTube has no incoming preview: check the server URL and current key in the encoder, then check the Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. An encoder’s local status alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
- The preview or feed disappears during the update: confirm the encoder is using the new key and start it again if necessary. The public documentation does not specify whether a reset itself ends an established connection, so verify the actual state instead of inferring it from the reset.
- The stream appears active but the broadcast is not as expected: distinguish the incoming feed from the broadcast event. YouTube models them separately; check both the encoder’s output and the relevant Live Control Room state.
Does YouTube archive a 24/7 stream automatically?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That statement does not establish what happens to a continuous stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so do not assume the entire 24/7 run will be automatically archived. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
