After you tap Apply, the lender processes your application using its own rules. It may check your credit, verify your identity and income, and decide whether to offer you a loan. A fast on-screen decision does not necessarily mean every check is finished—or that money has been sent. If you accept an offer, you generally still need to sign the loan agreement before funding.
What happens after you tap Apply?
There is no single workflow shared by every online lender. The lender decides what information it needs for the type and amount of credit requested, and it may collect or verify that information at different stages. Under Regulation B, an application is considered complete when the creditor has received the information it regularly obtains and considers for that kind of application. The CFPB’s Regulation B definition and commentary also say creditors should use reasonable diligence to collect needed information, including promptly requesting relevant third-party reports.
1. The lender receives and reviews your application
The lender starts with the information you submitted, but the required fields and what counts as a complete application can vary. If information is missing, it may ask you to provide it or seek a report from a third party. Not every lender asks for the same details or starts each check at the same time.
2. It may check your credit and other data
“Lenders usually run a credit check when you apply for a new loan,” the CFPB explains. An application may result in a hard inquiry, which can affect your credit score; some checks are soft inquiries. The lender’s authorization should explain what it may access and when, so read it rather than assuming that every application follows the same inquiry sequence.

For example, MoneyLion’s Loan Application Credit Authorization, updated June 2026, describes consumer-report use for application processing and identity verification, possible soft inquiries, and a possible hard inquiry after offer acceptance and agreement. It also describes use of linked transaction data when an applicant provides it. That is one company’s authorization, not a standard that applies to all lenders.
3. It may verify your identity, income, or other details
A quick initial result can be followed by checks to confirm information on the application. The lender may ask for more details or documents before it finalizes an offer. In a 2015 congressional hearing, LendingClub described risk-weighted identity and employment or income verification after initial online decisioning; its representative said that process typically took three to five days at the time. That historical account illustrates how a rapid initial result can coexist with later verification, but it is not a current industry timeline.

4. It makes a decision and presents any offer
Automated checks can help a lender reach a decision quickly, but the available sources do not establish a universal loan algorithm, credit-scoring model, or vendor setup. “Instant” may describe one stage or result—not a guarantee that all checks are complete or the loan is funded. Wells Fargo, for instance, says a credit decision for its personal loan may typically arrive the same day; that is guidance for its product, not a market-wide average.
5. You review and sign before funding
Approval, accepting an offer, signing the agreement, and receiving money are separate steps. Wells Fargo says applicants who accept its personal-loan terms review and sign documents. For eligible Wells Fargo checking or savings accounts, it says funds are deposited the same day the signed agreement is completed. Its cashier’s-check option typically takes five to seven business days by mail. Those timelines apply to Wells Fargo’s stated options, not to loans generally.

How long does the whole process take?
It depends on the lender, the product, whether your application is complete, and whether additional checks are needed. A lender’s same-day decision estimate does not necessarily tell you when verification will end or when funds will arrive. Check the lender’s stated timing separately for the decision, any follow-up requirements, signing, and disbursement.
There is also a legal notice deadline that is different from a digital decision-time estimate. The Federal Reserve’s Background and Summary of Regulation B says creditors generally must convey a consumer-credit decision within 30 days after receiving a completed application. For an adverse-action notice, the rule requires specific reasons or information on how to request them. Follow the notice you receive for instructions about your application.
