Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman reported that two Outlook instances on his personal computing device were not working during the mission’s first day in space. Mission Control remotely accessed the device, resolved a separate Optimus issue and got Outlook open. The display was expected to show the app as offline. The available reporting does not establish that astronauts were locked out of mission-critical email or operational instructions.

What happened to Outlook on Artemis II?

During the first day in space, Wiseman asked Mission Control to check Optimus and two Outlook instances on his personal computing device. TechCrunch identified the device as a Microsoft Surface Pro, citing NASA technical material, but the exact model and hardware configuration have not been established in the reviewed reporting. TechCrunch’s account reproduced Wiseman’s request: “I also see that I have two Microsoft Outlooks, and neither one of those are working. If you want to remote in and check Optimus and those two Outlooks, that would be awesome.”

Mission Control later reported that it had finished remotely accessing Wiseman’s personal computing device, resolved the Optimus issue and opened Outlook. The person speaking on the communications loop added that Outlook would show offline, which was expected. GeekWire reported that the exchange came about an hour after the crew’s request and that the fix involved reloading Wiseman’s Outlook files. The publication attributed the explanation to Artemis II ascent flight director Judd Frieling: the app can have configuration problems when there is no direct network connection.

Why “mission-critical emails” overstates what is known

The reported problem involved Outlook on a personal computing device, not Orion’s primary flight systems. GeekWire characterized Outlook as supporting scheduling, personal communications and other routine tasks, and reported that Orion’s primary flight systems operated on separate radiation-hardened hardware. The incident coverage does not establish that Outlook controlled spacecraft flight or safety systems, or that the crew could not receive critical operational instructions.

NASA describes Artemis II as the first crewed test flight in the Artemis campaign, intended to confirm Orion systems in the deep-space environment and give the crew practice for later missions. NASA also describes the Near Space Network and Deep Space Network as supporting voice, imagery, video and vital mission data. Those spacecraft communications and flight functions are distinct from Outlook on a crew member’s personal device. NASA’s Artemis II press kit and communications overview provide that mission context.

What the glitch does—and does not—tell us

  • Established: Wiseman reported two nonworking Outlook instances on his personal computing device, and Mission Control remotely accessed it.
  • Established: Mission Control said Outlook had been opened and that an offline status was expected; GeekWire reported that reloading Wiseman’s files resolved this instance.
  • Not established: The available accounts do not show that mission-critical email or safety communications were lost, or that Orion’s flight systems were affected.
  • Not specified: The precise Surface Pro model and a detailed technical root cause beyond the reported configuration problem are not identified.

The moment drew attention because familiar office software needed ground-team help during a historic deep-space flight. It is a useful reminder that crew personal-computing apps and spacecraft systems are not interchangeable: a problem with one should not be described as a failure of the other without evidence.
