In 2001, Agilent Technologies agreed to license its High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) product line to Ansoft and stop selling the software. Agilent continued supporting customers with existing contracts, while Ansoft took on the transition to its own HFSS product, including customer support and tools to move model files.

What did the 2001 agreement include?

Agilent and Ansoft announced the agreement on August 21, 2001. Under its terms, Agilent licensed the HFSS software product line to Ansoft. The transition agreement filed with the SEC was effective May 1, 2001, and Ansoft later reported May 3, 2001, as the product purchase date. These are different dates associated with the arrangement, not a single announcement or closing date. Agilent and Ansoft announcement Transition agreement Ansoft SEC filing

Agilent could purchase up to 60 Ansoft HFSS licenses. The announcement did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms. It also said there would be no personnel transfers: Agilent retained ownership and rights to its software and could incorporate HFSS technology into other electronic design automation (EDA) offerings under the agreement. Did Agilent stop selling HFSS?

Yes. Agilent said it would no longer sell HFSS and would focus its HFSS engineering resources on other radio-frequency (RF) and microwave design and verification tools. The change ended new sales by Agilent, but did not immediately end its obligations to existing customers: the company agreed to support the software for the duration of existing support contracts. Agilent HFSS licenses and support remained available through June 15, 2001, as part of the transition. That date is a historical cutoff, not an indication of current availability. Customer transition terms

How were Agilent HFSS customers moved to Ansoft?

The handoff separated existing-contract support from ongoing support after the transition. Ansoft planned to provide actively supported Agilent HFSS customers with complimentary software, documentation, licenses, training and support. The parties also announced plans for Ansoft to provide translators by November 1, 2001, to automatically convert customers’ two-dimensional and three-dimensional models from Agilent format to Ansoft format. What did HFSS do?

HFSS was software for three-dimensional electromagnetic analysis. Engineers used finite-element simulation to analyze and design RF and microwave hardware, with applications in wireless and wireline communications, aerospace and defense. Ansoft’s SEC filing described HFSS as its flagship 3D electromagnetic field-simulation software. Agilent and Ansoft announcement Ansoft SEC filing

How are Agilent HFSS, Ansoft HFSS and ANSYS HFSS related?

The 2001 agreement shifted the Agilent HFSS product line and customer-transition work to Ansoft. Ansoft’s later SEC filing records the May 3, 2001, purchase, and ANSYS completed its acquisition of Ansoft in 2008. The product lineage therefore continued from Agilent HFSS through Ansoft into the ANSYS portfolio. Ansoft SEC filing
