Texas Instruments acquired National Semiconductor in 2011. National became part of TI’s Analog business, and its products and expertise joined TI rather than continuing under an independent public company. If you are looking for a particular legacy National chip, check the exact part number in TI’s current documentation; the acquisition alone does not establish whether that device is still available or has a direct replacement.

Did Texas Instruments buy National Semiconductor?

Yes. On April 4, 2011, TI announced an agreement to acquire National Semiconductor for $25 per share in cash, valuing the transaction at approximately $6.5 billion. The companies described the combination as a way to join TI’s scale and broad analog portfolio with National’s analog expertise, particularly in industrial power management. TI and National’s announcement also cited a $42 billion analog-semiconductor market in 2010.

The announcement described the companies’ positions in that market at the time: TI reported $6.0 billion in analog revenue and a 14% share for 2010, while National reported about $1.6 billion in calendar-year 2010 revenue and a 3% share. These are historical figures, not current market or revenue data.

When did the acquisition close, and what changed?

The acquisition closed on September 23, 2011. National continued as a surviving corporation but became a wholly owned subsidiary of TI; eligible National shares converted into the right to receive $25 in cash, according to TI’s filing with the SEC. TI’s SEC filing records the legal completion.

Operationally, National became part of TI’s Analog business. More than 5,000 National employees joined TI, and the combined analog portfolio approached 45,000 products, according to TI’s closing announcement. TI also said it continued operating National manufacturing sites in Maine, Scotland, and Malaysia.

Why did TI acquire National?

The companies presented the deal as a complementary combination, not simply a purchase of chip designs. TI brought a larger global sales force, manufacturing capacity, and a broad range of analog products. National contributed an established analog portfolio, customer design tools, and strength in industrial power. TI said its combined sales force would be ten times larger than National’s previous sales footprint.

At announcement, the SEC transaction fact sheet listed 30,000 TI analog products and 12,000 National analog products. The fact sheet gives the companies’ product counts at that time; the later closing announcement described a combined portfolio approaching 45,000 products.

Are National Semiconductor chips now TI parts?

National Semiconductor is now part of TI, and its technology and product lines entered TI’s Analog business. That does not mean every National part number was renamed, discontinued, or replaced in the same way. The acquisition announcements establish the corporate and business integration, but not the current status of every device.

For a legacy LM, LP, or other National-designated device, search the exact part number on TI’s site and consult its current datasheet. Check the orderable part number, electrical specifications, package and pinout, lifecycle status, and any stated replacement before choosing an alternative. A distributor cross-reference can help identify candidates, but verify compatibility against the device documentation.

Where can I find a replacement for an old National IC?

  1. Find the full marking or part number on the chip, board documentation, or original bill of materials. Include suffixes, which can distinguish package or ordering variants.
  2. Search that exact number in TI’s product documentation and read the current datasheet and product-status information.
  3. If TI lists a replacement or related device, compare electrical limits and operating conditions, package and pin compatibility, and any design or qualification requirements. A similar name or function is not proof of a drop-in replacement.
  4. If the original device is unavailable or its status is unclear, check an authorized distributor for current availability and ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified design engineer to validate any substitute.

The 2011 acquisition materials do not establish present-day stock, lifecycle status, or a compatible replacement for any particular National device. Those details must be checked for the specific part.
