Google announced Assistant with Bard on October 4, 2023, as a generative-AI version of its personal assistant. Bard was renamed Gemini in February 2024, and Google’s current mobile assistant is Gemini—not a product still called “Assistant with Bard.” As of September 28, 2026, Google says it has begun retiring Assistant access on mobile, with the change expected to take several weeks. The original announcement marked a change in direction; it did not mean every proposed feature had launched or that the experience would work the same on every device.
What was Assistant with Bard?
At its October 4, 2023 Made by Google event, Google announced Assistant with Bard as a personal assistant combining Bard’s generative and reasoning capabilities with personalized help from Google Assistant. The proposed experience could take text, voice, and images as input and help users take actions. Google described integrations with services such as Gmail and Docs, and showed an Android overlay using a photo as context to draft a social post. Google’s announcement presented Android and iOS access as forthcoming, not as a generally available product on announcement day.
That announcement explains what Google meant by adding Bard-style AI to Assistant, but it is not proof that every demonstration shipped, became broadly available, or remains unchanged.
Is Bard now Gemini?
Yes. On February 8, 2024, Google announced that Bard was being renamed Gemini, alongside a Gemini mobile app and Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0. Google described Gemini on Android as a new kind of assistant that users could access through the app or, on supported phones, familiar Assistant activation methods such as “Hey Google.” Sissie Hsiao, Google’s vice president and general manager for Gemini experiences and Google Assistant, described it as “a new kind of assistant that uses generative AI to collaborate with you and help you get things done.” Google’s announcement also said many Assistant voice features—including timers, calls, and smart-home control—would be available through Gemini, with support for more still in progress at the time.

What can Gemini do as a phone assistant?
Google’s current comparison page lists assistant actions including reminders and lists, Maps, Gmail and Drive, YouTube, music, messaging, alarms and timers, smart-home control, calls, and other phone actions. These are documented capabilities, not a promise that every action is available on every phone or account. Availability can vary by device, account, region, and language. Google’s Gemini-versus-Assistant feature comparison is the place to check the current distinctions.
The practical difference is partly about interaction style. A short command such as setting a timer remains an assistant task; Gemini also supports generative, contextual interaction, including using information or media supplied in a prompt. Whether that added flexibility helps depends on the task: Google notes that simple requests can sometimes take longer in Gemini than in Google Assistant.

Is Google Assistant being replaced on Android?
Google’s August 6, 2026 employee announcement says the company began removing mobile Google Assistant access on September 3 and expected the process to take several weeks. As of September 28, 2026, the announced transition is therefore underway; Google has not said that every user has completed it. When Gemini becomes the assistant on a mobile device, the change also affects compatible paired watches and earbuds, and Android Auto projected from that phone. Google says Assistant remains available on Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, and in cars with Google built in. Google’s transition announcement distinguishes these cases.
Which Android phones can use Gemini?
Google’s requirements are not identical across devices. Its Pixel help page says Gemini is the default assistant on Pixel 9 and later, and that Gemini can be downloaded on Pixel devices with at least 2 GB of RAM running Android 10 or later. For other Android phones, Google says users may download Gemini or switch to it as their primary mobile assistant, subject to eligibility and availability. These requirements do not guarantee that all features are enabled for every user or region. Check Google’s Pixel Gemini help page and Google’s Android Gemini page for device-specific details.

What are Gemini’s limitations?
- Check important answers. Google warns that Gemini can give inaccurate or inappropriate information and advises users to double-check its responses. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.
- Simple tasks may be slower. Google says some requests can take longer with Gemini than with Google Assistant.
- Not every familiar interaction carries over. Pixel help documentation notes that some routine starters and actions are unsupported, and that some actions return voice and text instead of visual cards.
- Availability is conditional. Device, account, region, and language can affect which features work.
These qualifications matter when judging the change: Gemini brings generative-AI interaction to assistant tasks, but Google’s own documentation does not establish a universal improvement in speed, accuracy, or coverage.
