Android Central’s remaining staff were laid off at the end of September 2026, according to The Verge. Its owner, Future, said the site would continue publishing, but the report did not establish what its long-term staffing or editorial operation will look like. That leaves the outlet’s immediate publishing status clearer than its longer-term future.
What happened to Android Central’s staff?
In a report published October 1, 2026, The Verge said all of Android Central’s remaining staff were laid off at the end of September. The Verge referenced a staff page listing six people: four—Shruti Shekar, Derrek Lee, Harish Jonnalagadda, and Nicholas Sutrich—had publicly posted about the layoffs the previous day, while former senior editor Namerah Saud Fatmi had updated LinkedIn to show her tenure had ended. Managing editor Derrek Lee and Nicholas Sutrich confirmed to The Verge that all remaining staff were affected.
The six-person figure is the staff-page count cited in the report, not an independently audited employment total.
Is Android Central shutting down?
Future spokesperson Nicole Martineau told The Verge: “Future will continue to publish Android Central. We’ll share further information about the future of the site in due course.” She also said: “We will not be providing any further comment at this time.”

That is a commitment to continue publishing, not a detailed plan for the publication’s future. The Verge reported that staffers had not been told whether the site would shut down. Its reporting did not establish a shutdown decision, nor did it guarantee the site’s long-term staffing, publishing frequency, editorial leadership, or format.
Who is publishing articles now?
At the time of The Verge’s October 1 report, Android Central remained online and new articles were appearing under freelance contributors’ bylines rather than those of the former full-time staff. That describes the site as observed at report time; it does not confirm what staffing or publishing arrangements may follow.
