Yujing Zhang was detained at Mar-a-Lago in March 2019 after entering the property and giving explanations that raised questions for staff and Secret Service agents. A complaint said a preliminary forensic examination found malware on a thumb drive among her devices. That finding did not establish that malware infected a government system or that the incident was an espionage operation. A federal jury later convicted Zhang of unlawful entry and making false statements; she was sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of supervised release.
What happened at Mar-a-Lago?
CyberScoop reporter Greg Otto reported on April 2, 2019, that Zhang briefly entered Mar-a-Lago the prior week and was detained after a receptionist determined that the event she cited was not taking place. According to that contemporaneous account, Secret Service agents initially considered whether she was related to a club member with the same last name. They allowed her access after interpreting her lack of response as a language barrier.
CyberScoop reported that Zhang also gave an account to agents involving a Chinese friend called “Charles,” who had sent her from Shanghai to speak with a member of the president’s family about Chinese-American economic relations. Those are reported statements, not proof of Zhang’s motive. CyberScoop said there was no indication she had ever been in proximity to the president.
Was there malware on Zhang’s thumb drive?
The criminal complaint says a preliminary forensic examination determined that the thumb drive contained malicious malware. CyberScoop summarized the finding more categorically, reporting that a forensic test determined the drive contained malware. The complaint’s wording is the more careful description of the forensic finding available in the cited record.

Was Yujing Zhang convicted?
Yes. The April 2019 CyberScoop report described the allegations and charges at that stage. In a later disposition, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said a federal jury convicted Zhang of unlawful entry of restricted buildings or grounds and making false statements to U.S. Secret Service agents. On November 26, 2019, she was sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of supervised release.

The cited reporting, complaint, and Justice Department disposition do not establish that Zhang was conducting espionage. The malware finding is not, by itself, evidence of an espionage purpose or a successful network compromise. The documented jury convictions were for unlawful entry and making false statements.
