There is no single safe FurMark temperature for every laptop GPU. The controlling limit is the maximum operating or junction temperature published for your exact GPU and laptop model. FurMark is an unusually severe load, so a temperature that is acceptable in a game may be too high for this test.
As a practical screening rule, FurMark’s guide says a temperature curve that levels off and remains usually below 85–90°C is a useful sign. Treat that range as a heuristic, not a universal limit: stop at the lower model-specific limit, and stop sooner if the laptop becomes unstable or cannot hold a steady temperature.
Why FurMark temperatures are higher than game temperatures
FurMark is designed to maximize GPU power draw rather than imitate a typical game workload. NVIDIA describes it as an application that stresses the GPU “well beyond any real world application or game.” That makes it useful for finding cooling problems, unstable overclocks and weak airflow, but it also means its peak temperature is not a prediction of normal gaming temperature.
Modern GPUs include protection mechanisms that can reduce clock speed or power when thermal or electrical limits are reached. NVIDIA says those mechanisms are intended to keep the graphics card operating safely. A falling clock rate, visible performance slowdown or a flat temperature plateau can therefore indicate throttling rather than excellent cooling.

Laptop results are especially variable. The same GPU name can be configured with different power limits, cooling assemblies and firmware in different laptops. Fan profiles, room temperature, battery-versus-AC operation and the selected FurMark preset also change the result.
Find the correct temperature limit first
Use the exact GPU specification
Identify the complete GPU name shown by Windows, the driver panel or a hardware-information utility. “RTX laptop GPU” or “Radeon graphics” is not precise enough. Mobile and desktop versions can have different limits, and two laptops using the same mobile GPU may use different firmware and power settings.
Then check the GPU manufacturer’s technical documentation for the maximum operating temperature, junction temperature or another explicitly defined thermal limit. If the specification gives separate values for core and junction, match each sensor to the corresponding limit. Do not substitute a number from a similarly named GPU.

Check the laptop manufacturer’s support information
OEM documentation can add limits or operating guidance for the complete laptop, including fan modes, power profiles and adapter requirements. If the laptop maker’s published limit is lower than the GPU vendor’s value, use the lower limit. A manufacturer-defined shutdown or thermal-protection setting is not permission to run continuously at that point; it is a last-resort protection boundary.
When no numeric limit is available
NVIDIA’s general FurMark guidance is safety-oriented and does not establish one universal temperature for every laptop. In that situation, use the FurMark 85–90°C curve guideline only as an initial screen, keep the run short and supervised, and treat any instability or continuing temperature rise as a reason to stop. A missing number is not evidence that a higher temperature is safe.
Core, average and hotspot temperatures are different
Monitoring software may show GPU core or edge temperature, an average temperature and a hotspot or junction temperature. These readings are taken or calculated differently and should not be compared as if they were the same sensor. AMD documents both core-related and junction readings for Radeon RX 5700-series products, illustrating why the label matters.

| Reading | What it represents | How to use it during FurMark |
|---|---|---|
| Core, edge or GPU temperature | The conventional GPU temperature reported by the driver or board sensor. | Compare it with the published core or operating-temperature limit for the exact model. |
| Hotspot or junction temperature | The hottest monitored point or a junction value, which can be substantially higher than the core reading. | Use the model’s published junction limit when one is provided; do not judge safety from core temperature alone. |
| Average temperature | A calculated or smoothed value that may hide short peaks. | Record the peak as well as the average and note how the monitoring tool defines the value. |
A 90°C core result on one laptop is not directly comparable with a 90°C hotspot result on another. Record the sensor name exactly whenever you report or compare a test.

Is 85°C or 90°C safe?
It depends on the exact limit, the sensor and the behavior of the run.
| Observed result | Reasonable interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Below 85°C, curve levels off | Usually a comfortable screening result, provided it remains below the published limit and the system is stable. | Complete the planned supervised run and record the conditions. |
| 85–90°C, curve levels off | Within FurMark’s practical heuristic, but not automatically safe for every model or sensor. | Verify the exact specification, check hotspot/junction data and watch for throttling or errors. |
| 90°C or higher | May be acceptable for some GPUs, but may exceed a particular laptop’s limit. A rising curve is more concerning than a stable plateau. | Stop if the model limit is reached, if the limit is unknown and temperature keeps rising, or if instability appears. |
| Above the published limit | Outside the manufacturer’s stated operating range. | Stop immediately; do not continue to see whether it will recover. |
Do not treat “90°C” as a universal pass/fail threshold. A laptop with a lower documented limit must be stopped below 90°C, while a GPU with a higher, explicitly documented junction limit may remain within specification at a higher hotspot value under the stated conditions. The specification and sensor definition control.

Safe FurMark workflow for a laptop
- Identify the hardware. Write down the exact laptop model, GPU model and whether the reading is core, edge, average, hotspot or junction.
- Locate the limit. Use the GPU vendor’s specification and the laptop manufacturer’s support documentation. Note whether the value applies to core temperature, junction temperature, gaming or another workload.
- Return the system to baseline. Install a current, stable graphics driver and remove experimental overclocks, undervolts or aggressive power-limit changes. A stress test should first evaluate the laptop’s normal configuration.
- Connect the approved adapter. Run on the manufacturer-approved AC adapter. Battery operation can impose a different power profile and makes the result difficult to compare with later tests.
- Set up airflow. Put the laptop on a hard, level, ventilated surface. Keep every intake and exhaust clear; do not run the test on bedding, clothing or a soft lap surface. A ventilated stand or cooling pad can improve airflow, but it does not increase the rated temperature limit.
- Prepare visible monitoring. Display temperature, hotspot or junction when available, GPU clock, power draw, fan speed and utilization. Watch the screen rather than leaving the test unattended.
- Start with a short run. Use the intended FurMark preset, resolution and graphics API, and begin with a brief supervised interval. Observe whether temperature rises toward a plateau or continues climbing.
- Stop on a defined trigger. End the run immediately if the exact thermal limit is exceeded, the curve fails to stabilize, or artifacts, a driver reset, freeze, black screen, crash or shutdown occurs.
- Record the result. Save FurMark version, preset, resolution, API, run duration, ambient conditions when known, peak core temperature, peak hotspot/junction temperature, clocks, fan mode, adapter status and any symptoms.
When to stop even before the temperature limit
- Artifacts: flashing pixels, corrupted textures, colored blocks or unusual geometric patterns indicate instability and are not made safe by a temperature reading below 90°C.
- Driver recovery: a driver timeout, reset or display flicker means the workload is not stable at the current settings.
- Freezes or black screens: stop and allow the system to recover rather than repeatedly waiting for protection circuitry.
- Unexpected shutdown: investigate cooling, power delivery and firmware before running another stress test.
- Uncontrolled temperature rise: if the curve continues upward instead of leveling off, end the test before reaching the limit.
- Severe throttling: a sudden sustained clock reduction can be a protection response. Record it; do not call the run a thermal pass simply because the temperature stopped increasing.
How to compare two FurMark results fairly
Temperature numbers only have meaning when the test conditions match. Use the following checklist before concluding that one laptop runs cooler:
| Factor | What must match or be reported |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Exact GPU model, laptop model, firmware and power configuration. |
| Software | FurMark version, graphics API, preset and resolution. |
| Environment | Room or ambient temperature and whether the laptop was freshly idle or already warm. |
| Power and cooling | Approved adapter, Windows or OEM power mode, fan mode, stand or cooling pad and unobstructed vents. |
| Sensor | Core/edge/average versus hotspot/junction, including the monitoring tool’s label. |
| Time behavior | Run duration, peak temperature and whether the curve stabilized. |
| Stability | Clock throttling, artifacts, driver resets, crashes or shutdowns. |
A one-degree difference from tests performed in different rooms or with different presets is not meaningful. Reproduce the same settings and report the complete conditions before attributing a change to a driver, cooling pad or laptop modification.
Cooling pads, stands and airflow fixes
A hard, ventilated surface is a basic requirement for a laptop FurMark run, not an optional performance tweak. A cooling pad or ventilated stand may help the laptop draw cooler air or prevent an intake from being blocked. It cannot raise the GPU’s rated limit and cannot make an unstable or continuously rising test safe.

If temperatures are unexpectedly high, first check for blocked vents, dust buildup, a fan profile that is not engaging, an incorrect power mode or an adapter that is not delivering the expected power. Re-run only after the cause is addressed. Avoid treating higher fan noise as a fault by itself; increased fan speed is the normal response to a heavy load.
Why an AMD 110°C figure does not answer every FurMark question
AMD has stated that operation up to 110°C junction temperature during typical gaming usage is expected and within specification for Radeon RX 5700-series products. That statement is specific to that product family, to the junction sensor and to typical gaming usage. It is not a universal FurMark limit for all Radeon GPUs, all laptops or all workloads.
Use the exact model’s specification and workload qualification instead. A number copied from a desktop product page, a different Radeon generation or a core-temperature reading cannot establish the safe limit for your laptop.
Interpreting a complete result
Suppose a laptop reaches 88°C core temperature, levels off after several minutes, reports a 96°C hotspot, shows no artifacts or driver resets and remains below both published limits. That is a documented, stable result under the stated FurMark settings; it is not proof that every laptop with the same GPU will behave the same way.
Conversely, a laptop that reaches only 82°C core temperature but repeatedly produces a black screen has failed the stability test. The symptom determines the next action even though the temperature appears modest. A trustworthy conclusion combines the exact limits, sensor type, stabilized peak, clocks and observed behavior.
