Its practical advice is to represent authors and their qualifications accurately, and to provide bylines where readers would expect them.
What Google means by deceptive authorship information
Google’s people-first content guidance asks publishers to consider “Who” created a page: whether its authorship is clear, whether readers would expect a byline, and whether that byline links to useful background about the author. Google says it “strongly encourage[s] adding accurate authorship information, such as bylines to content where readers might expect it.” It then warns: “However, avoid using deceptive authorship information.” Google’s people-first content guidance gives examples of deception: fabricated creator profiles, made-up names, AI-generated headshots, and false credentials used to make content look as if human experts wrote it.
The key distinction is truthful attribution versus a manufactured impression of identity or expertise. A byline and author page should not claim a real person, professional qualification, or firsthand experience that does not exist. Google frames this as guidance for evaluating helpful, reliable, people-first content, not as a standalone checklist that determines how every page will rank.
Does Google require an author byline?
No universal byline requirement appears in this guidance. Google encourages accurate authorship information where readers might expect it, and asks whether authorship is self-evident and whether a byline provides relevant background. The appropriate presentation depends on the page and what readers need to understand its origin; the guidance does not say every page must name an individual author.

Do you have to disclose AI-generated content?
Google does not say that every use of AI must be disclosed. Its generative AI guidance says to consider explaining how automation was used when readers would reasonably wonder how the content was created. That is a context-sensitive consideration, not a blanket labeling rule. Google also notes that generative AI can be useful, while warning that its outputs may be inaccurate and should be checked, including information in metadata that may appear in Search. See Google’s guidance on using generative AI content on your website.
AI assistance itself is not the authorship-deception test described in the guidance. The concern is misleading readers about the creator or presenting a false human-expert identity. Separately, Google’s spam policies address content created primarily to manipulate Search rather than help people. Its March 2024 explanation of its core update and spam policies says the scaled content abuse policy applies whether pages are produced through automation, human effort, or a combination.

Can you publish under a pen name?
Google’s cited guidance does not establish that every pseudonym is deceptive. The distinction is whether the presentation misleads readers. A transparent pen name that does not invent credentials or imply nonexistent expertise is different from a fabricated expert persona designed to pass as a real, qualified person. That distinction is a practical interpretation of Google’s examples, not a separate rule Google states about all pseudonyms.
For an author page, keep claims about employment, qualifications, and experience verifiable and relevant. Avoid a fictional biography or image that creates a false impression of who is responsible for the content. Where a byline is used, it should identify the actual creator or explain the publishing identity clearly enough not to mislead.

How authorship fits into Google’s spam policies
Google defines Search spam broadly as practices intended to deceive users or manipulate Search systems. Its spam policies for Google web search say violations may lead to lower rankings or omission from Search, and that enforcement can involve automated systems and human review.
Authorship is one contextual consideration, not an automatic verdict. In relevant site-reputation reviews, Google may assess factors such as how content is integrated, its quality, who is responsible for it, and whether it is duplicated. Google says no single factor is necessary or sufficient on its own. Deceptive identity signals should therefore be understood as part of the broader assessment of whether a site is misleading users or attempting to manipulate Search—not as a claim that one missing byline or one AI-assisted article necessarily violates a policy.

A practical authorship check
- Identify the creator accurately. Do not invent a person, credentials, or experience to make content appear expert-written.
- Use a byline when readers would expect one. If authorship matters to the page, make it clear and provide relevant author background.
- Be thoughtful about AI context. Explain automation when readers would reasonably want to know how the content was made; Google does not prescribe a disclosure for every AI-assisted page.
- Review generated material. Check facts and relevant metadata rather than assuming automated output is reliable.
- Keep the purpose people-first. The question is not simply whether a human or a tool produced the page, but whether the content is accurate, useful, and presented honestly.
