Google announced Proofread for Google Docs on August 29, 2023, as an AI-powered layer of writing suggestions beyond spelling and grammar. It offered help with concision, active voice, wording, and sentence splitting. Google’s announcement described a Duet AI for Google Workspace Enterprise add-on requirement at launch; that historical detail does not establish who can use Proofread today.

What Proofread offered in Google Docs

Google presented Proofread as an extension of Docs’ existing grammar suggestions, Smart Compose, and Smart Reply. Its sidebar surfaced editorial suggestions in four categories, alongside spelling and grammar help:

  • Conciseness: suggest ways to make writing more concise.
  • Active voice: suggest changes intended to make writing clearer to readers.
  • Wording: recommend words that sound more dynamic or formal in context.
  • Sentence split: suggest splitting complex sentences to make them easier to read.

Google described the suggestions as non-intrusive during writing and collaboration. Users could review and accept suggestions in a sidebar and filter which types appeared. The announcement said Proofread was on by default and could be turned off through Tools > Proofread. Those are details of the 2023 announcement, not a verified walkthrough of the current Docs interface. Google Workspace Updates, August 29, 2023

Who could use it at launch

In its August 2023 announcement, Google said Proofread was exclusive to the Duet AI for Google Workspace Enterprise add-on. Google also said alpha testers who did not purchase that add-on would lose access beginning August 29, 2023. This records the launch terms only; it should not be treated as a statement of current eligibility or price. Google Workspace Updates, August 29, 2023

How Proofread differs from later Gemini writing tools

Google described additional Docs writing tools in a March 10, 2026 announcement. That post discusses Gemini features, but does not say whether the older Proofread feature remains, was renamed, or is equivalent to them.

Aspect Proofread announcement (2023) Gemini Docs announcement (2026)
Task Sentence-level spelling, grammar, and style suggestions in four named editorial categories. Help me create can draft content; Help me write can suggest edits to a section or document; Match writing style can suggest edits intended to make voice and tone consistent.
Interaction Review and accept suggestions in a sidebar; filter suggestion types. Prompt-driven drafting or editing, including reviewing and accepting suggested edits; Match writing style suggests adjustments for consistency.
Announced access Exclusive to the Duet AI for Google Workspace Enterprise add-on at launch; current eligibility is not established here. Google identified Gemini Alpha business customers and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers as the launch audience.
Language at launch Not stated in the announcement details cited here. Google said the features would initially launch in English.

Yulie Kwon Kim, Google’s VP, Product – Workspace, described the later editing approach this way: “Once you have a draft, Gemini helps you refine specific sections without regenerating the entire document.” That quote concerns the Gemini Docs experience, not Proofread. Is Proofread available in Google Docs now?

The official announcements cited here do not confirm whether a standalone Proofread control remains in Docs in September 2026, whether its name changed, or which plan currently includes it. The 2023 Tools menu path and add-on requirement are historical. For current availability, check Google’s current Docs Help Center or Workspace plan documentation before relying on a particular control or subscription.

What Proofread’s announcement does—and does not—show

Google’s 2023 announcement called Proofread “our latest innovation that helps you more easily and quickly compose high-quality content in Google Docs.” That describes Google’s product positioning, not a measured guarantee of writing quality or accuracy. Google Workspace Updates, August 29, 2023

Other Google figures from earlier years concern different products or broader writing assistance, not Proofread performance. In 2019, Google said Gmail Smart Compose saved users more than 2 billion characters each week; in 2020, it reported more than 2 billion grammar suggestions in Docs each month. Neither number measures Proofread usage, suggestion accuracy, or acceptance. Google Workspace Blog, November 22, 2019 Google Workspace Blog, June 23, 2020

Google also reported in 2019 that its research found linguists disagreed about whether a grammar suggestion was correct one in four times. That is a measure of reviewer disagreement, not evidence that the product itself is wrong 25% of the time. Google Workspace Blog, February 26, 2019
