Demis Hassabis, then chief executive of Google DeepMind, warned that society should take AI risks as seriously as climate change and avoid delaying a coordinated response. The phrase “existential threat to humankind” in the October 2023 headline is a paraphrase, not a direct quote from Hassabis. In a Guardian interview published October 24, 2023, he discussed risks including malicious use and the possibility of losing control of highly capable AI systems, alongside AI’s potential benefits.

Who was the “Google AI boss”?

The headline referred to Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind at the time. The Guardian published the interview on October 24, 2023, ahead of the UK government’s AI Safety Summit. Futurism’s October 26 headline summarized the warning in stronger terms than Hassabis’s quoted wording.

What did Hassabis say about AI risks?

Hassabis said: “We must take the risks of AI as seriously as other major global challenges, like climate change.” He warned that the international community had taken too long to coordinate an effective response to climate change and said, “We can’t afford the same delay with AI.” The Guardian interview framed his point as a call for timely attention to AI risks, not a declaration that catastrophe is inevitable.

Among the dangers he discussed were malicious use of AI, including the possibility that it could make bioweapon creation easier, and rogue or superintelligent systems that might escape human control. Those are risks he raised, not outcomes the interview established as certain or assigned a probability.

Hassabis also emphasized AI’s potential benefits and rejected the idea that he was pessimistic about the technology: “I am not in the pessimistic camp about AI obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t be working on it.” His position was that development should continue while serious risks receive attention.

What safety measures did he propose?

Hassabis discussed creating an independent AI oversight body modeled on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He also raised the possibility of a battery of tests and a safety mark for AI systems. These were proposals and possibilities, not an existing regulator or universal certification program.

Such measures would have to answer practical questions: whether an oversight body is independent of the organizations it assesses, whether tests can evaluate both capabilities and safety, how transparent the results are, and whether different organizations can apply evaluations consistently. The interview and subsequent company announcements do not establish that any particular design is proven effective.

What happened around the AI Safety Summit?

On October 25, 2023, Google announced an AI Safety Fund with Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The organizations said it was worth more than $10 million and intended to support AI safety research; the announcement is not evidence that the full amount was spent or that the fund produced safety outcomes. Google’s announcement describes the fund.

On October 27, Google DeepMind published an update outlining its approach to safety and responsibility and acknowledging the difficulty of evaluating AI systems. The update provides company context, but it does not demonstrate that Hassabis’s proposed independent oversight or safety mark was implemented.

Does the headline establish that AI is an existential threat?

No. The Guardian interview documents Hassabis’s warning and ideas for oversight; it does not settle whether AI is an existential threat, how likely that outcome is, or which safeguards work. The headline’s wording is a paraphrase of his call to take risks seriously, rather than his exact quote. The distinction matters: he described potentially severe dangers while also arguing that AI can bring benefits and that risks merit a timely, coordinated response.
