GENIVI Platform 1.0 was an open-source-based reference platform for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), not a retail head unit or a finished car system. GENIVI Alliance planned to demonstrate it at International CES in Las Vegas on January 7–10, 2010; the alliance later confirmed that CES was its first public demonstration.
What GENIVI Platform 1.0 was
GENIVI described itself as a nonprofit industry association working to develop and encourage adoption of an open IVI reference platform. Its work included aligning industry requirements, delivering reference implementations, offering certification programs, and supporting an open-source IVI community. The goal was a shared software foundation for in-car applications such as music, news, multimedia, navigation, telephone, and Internet services, while leaving automakers room to shape the finished product.
The platform was intended for automakers, or OEMs, and Tier One suppliers building infotainment systems. It was a reusable software starting point, not a consumer product that drivers could buy and install.

The alliance’s broader membership had grown to more than 60 by its first anniversary in March 2010, according to GENIVI Alliance.
What GENIVI planned to show at CES
In its December 31, 2009 announcement, GENIVI said it would present Platform 1.0 at International CES in Las Vegas, scheduled for January 7–10, 2010. The planned reference-implementation demonstration was in Visteon’s Central Plaza CP13 exhibition area, in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center. GENIVI’s March 16, 2010 anniversary announcement confirmed the platform had been demonstrated publicly for the first time at CES in January.

The demonstration’s significance was the shared platform approach: competing companies were cooperating on pre-competitive layers of IVI software rather than each starting from an entirely separate foundation. GENIVI president Graham Smethurst called the short development timeline and CES demonstrations evidence for the alliance’s case that shared work could help shorten development cycles and lower costs without sacrificing quality or product differentiation.
Why the alliance thought a common platform could help
Automotive infotainment systems combine software and vehicle-specific requirements. GENIVI’s proposal was to make some underlying software reusable across products, allowing OEMs and suppliers to reduce duplicated development work and bring differentiated devices to market sooner. The platform was not meant to make every vehicle’s interface or feature set identical: differentiation remained the responsibility of each manufacturer.

These were GENIVI’s stated goals, not proof that every project using the platform achieved a particular saving or launch schedule. The 2009 announcement framed lower development costs and faster time to market as expected benefits.

In July 2010, the Linux Foundation reported that GENIVI had selected MeeGo as the basis for its next IVI reference release. That later choice marked a subsequent direction for the alliance; it should not be confused with the announcement of Platform 1.0 or the CES demonstration itself. The Linux Foundation characterized IVI as encompassing navigation, entertainment, location-based services, and connectivity to devices, vehicle networks, and broadband networks.
