But the announced agreements do not show that Geely vehicles are already using NIO stations more often—or that utilization or profitability has improved. The deal is best understood as a wager on future network use, dependent on compatible vehicles, adoption and execution.
What did NIO and Geely agree to?
On September 27, 2026, NIO announced definitive agreements with Geely Holding subsidiaries. The transaction remains subject to regulatory clearances and customary closing conditions; the announcement is not evidence that it has closed. Under the proposed terms, a Geely subsidiary would contribute its entire equity interest in Yiyi Internet Technology (Chongqing) Co., Ltd. (Yiyi Power), a provider of battery-swapping services for commercial mobility, plus RMB640 million in cash, in exchange for newly issued equity in NIO Energy Investment (Hubei) Co., Ltd., known as NIO Power. At closing, the expected ownership would be 30% for the Geely subsidiary, 63.6% for NIO China and 6.4% for an existing investor. The announced post-money valuation is approximately RMB16 billion. NIO’s announcement says the Geely stake may be adjusted against operating milestones, with a possible reduction to no less than 20% for underperformance. A further RMB640 million investment option could raise the stake to 34%, absent post-closing adjustment; the announcement does not detail the milestone formula.
The arrangement also includes a reciprocal charging investment. NIO China has agreed to subscribe for 10% of Geely subsidiary Haohan Energy, which operates a charging business. The announced cash is to be used to purchase certain charging assets from NIO. This is part of the same set of agreements, but it does not itself establish additional use of NIO’s battery-swap stations.
Why network utilization is the key question
A battery-swap station is a fixed, capital-intensive asset with finite capacity. If more compatible vehicles use it, the site, its battery inventory and operating costs can be spread across more swaps; a network that serves more vehicles may also be more attractive to vehicle partners. That is the strategic logic implied by the deal—not a utilization result reported by either company.

NIO’s Station 4.0 is described as capable of up to 480 swaps per day, but that is a capacity ceiling, not the number of swaps it typically completes. The September 2026 announcements disclose no station-level utilization rate, Geely-attributed swap count or per-station margin. Capacity tells readers what a station may handle under stated conditions; it does not reveal how much of that capacity is being used or whether the site is profitable.
What could Yiyi Power add?
Yiyi Power’s commercial-mobility swapping business gives the proposed investment an operating component as well as cash. Commercial fleets can be a concentrated use case: vehicles may work intensively and follow predictable routes, potentially bringing recurring demand to selected sites. The Associated Press has reported expert views that fleets may be a natural early application for swapping, while also describing standardization and battery-supply-chain control as concerns for automakers. Commercial activity does not automatically translate into high use across NIO’s consumer network. The companies’ November 29, 2023 agreement anticipated battery standards for both private and commercial vehicles and compatible vehicles for their swap systems. Will Geely vehicles use NIO swap stations?
The companies have announced plans, not completed deployments. Geely says it will develop consumer-facing battery-swappable models while NIO Power provides swap services. NIO’s regulatory filing characterizes adoption and service plans as preliminary and subject to further discussion. The companies also say they plan to co-develop technology and standards and connect their charging infrastructure. NIO’s announcement and Geely’s announcement describe these as plans; neither establishes that Geely consumer models are already swapping at NIO stations or specifies realized compatible vehicle volumes.

Historical company figures give a sense of the network’s scale and technical design, but they cannot be treated as current utilization data:

What will determine whether the bet works?
More network assets or partners alone do not ensure productive use. The relevant tests are whether compatible vehicles arrive in meaningful numbers, whether standards and operations work across the systems, and whether site demand supports the cost of stations and spare batteries. For swapping versus charging, useful comparison points include:

- Vehicle and battery compatibility: whether vehicles, packs, stations and operating arrangements work together.
- Time and duty cycle: how long replenishment takes and whether a vehicle’s work pattern makes swapping useful.
- Capital requirements: the cost of stations and spare-battery inventory, including how those assets are financed.
- Coverage and visits: whether station locations match vehicle routes and attract enough visits per site.
- Battery ownership: how ownership, subscriptions and battery-asset management affect costs and incentives.
- Partner commitment: how many compatible vehicles are actually deployed and how frequently they use the network.
The available announcements and operating figures do not supply comparable cost data sufficient to conclude that swapping is cheaper or more profitable than charging overall.
What to watch after the announcement
The deal’s premise can be assessed only as implementation and operating evidence emerge. The most informative developments would be confirmation of closing, the vehicles and fleets made compatible, actual deployment and use, and station-level operating results. Until companies disclose measures such as Geely-related visits, daily swaps, revenue per site or contribution margin, a larger partnership should not be mistaken for demonstrated improvement in network economics.
