Samsung’s Focus Mode is for temporarily pausing or silencing notifications from selected apps. It is not the control Samsung documents for choosing which calls, messages, and app alerts may interrupt you: those exceptions are handled by Do not disturb. The available controls and their names can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region.
What Focus Mode does—and what it does not promise
Samsung describes Focus Mode as a way to “pause or silence notifications from selected applications temporarily” while you concentrate on a task. In practical terms, it concerns notifications from apps you select. Samsung’s general description does not define one universal list of calls, messages, or other alerts that bypass Focus Mode.
Focus Mode’s behavior around opening or using apps should also be checked on the phone itself. An older Samsung guide describes choosing which applications are available during a focus period, while Samsung’s current overview emphasizes pausing or silencing notifications. Where to control calls, messages, and app exceptions
For calls or messages that should be allowed to alert you, use Do not disturb’s exception or “Allowed during Do not disturb” controls rather than assuming Focus Mode has the same allow-list. Samsung documents Do not disturb settings for calls and messages, app notifications, alarms and sounds, notification hiding, and schedules.

To find the controls, open Settings and look for Do not disturb, commonly under Notifications. On Samsung’s US instructions, you can also open Quick settings and touch and hold the Do not disturb icon. Menu labels and paths are not guaranteed to match on every phone; Samsung’s US Do not disturb guide provides one interface example.

Samsung’s current support instructions describe these types of exceptions. The precise options shown depend on the phone and its software.

- People and calls: allow or block selected contacts or calls, and, where offered, permit repeated callers.
- Messages: configure whether messages from selected people can alert you.
- Apps: choose apps whose notifications may interrupt Do not disturb.
- System alerts: configure items such as alarms, calendar events, or reminders.
For a current example, Samsung Germany’s instructions—updated 2026-09-22 and illustrated with a Galaxy S26+ running Android 16 and One UI 8.5—show these kinds of controls. That example is not a universal menu map: Samsung warns that steps and screens differ by model, installed software, and region. Consult its German Do not disturb instructions alongside the settings on your own phone.

Why menus and exceptions may look different
Samsung’s UK One UI 5.1.1 feature notes describe easier individual-contact exceptions and adding apps as Do not disturb exceptions. This is a version-specific change, not evidence that every Galaxy phone has the same screens today. Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 feature page documents that historical update.

Use the labels and categories actually displayed on your device. The route may vary, and an option described in instructions for a different software version or region may be named differently or absent.

Check whether the relevant contact, message type, app, or system alert is allowed under Do not disturb. An alert appearing does not mean the underlying call or message was deleted or blocked: the settings described here concern notification behavior, not delivery of the communication itself.
