Export your AI-generated model in a format your print-preparation app accepts—often 3MF or STL—and then check the mesh itself. For a solid print, the geometry should be valid, closed, consistently oriented and generally free of self-intersections. A supported file extension alone does not make a model printable.
Choose a format your print-preparation app supports
File formats differ in the information they carry, but none guarantees sound geometry. Confirm the receiving slicer or print utility’s current import options before exporting, and keep the editable source project if it contains information an interchange file may not preserve.

These descriptions do not mean that every slicer or printer accepts every format. In particular, an STL’s unitless geometry means its apparent dimensions may depend on how the receiving app interprets scale.
Check whether the mesh is actually ready to print
For a solid intended to define a printable volume, Autodesk’s triangle-mesh guidance says a good mesh should be valid, closed, correctly oriented and generally free of self-intersections. Inspect the geometry rather than relying on the filename or extension.

- Holes and boundary edges: Look for unintended gaps in a surface that should enclose a solid.
- Non-manifold connections: Check for edges or vertices joined in ways that prevent the mesh from defining an unambiguous surface.
- Orientation: Look for flipped or inconsistently oriented faces.
- Invalid or overlapping geometry: Check for degenerate faces, duplicate geometry and self-intersections.
- Multiple shells: Determine whether separate shells are intentional and whether the receiving application interprets them as expected.
Not every open or perforated structure is necessarily a defect. Autodesk notes that some support structures can be open or perforated and still work with particular toolpath-generation methods. Whether to close a gap depends on what the mesh represents and how the target workflow handles it.
Repair the specific defect, not every warning
Save a copy before making repairs, especially before operations that reconstruct a surface. Autodesk Fusion documents several repair options with different scopes:

- Close Holes: Addresses holes and flipped triangles.
- Stitch and Remove: Also stitches triangles and removes duplicate or degenerate faces and tiny shells.
- One Touch Fix: Attempts a broader set of common repairs.
- Wrap and Rebuild: More substantial reconstruction options. Autodesk warns that they destroy inner structures, so preview and compare the result before accepting them.
Choose the least disruptive operation that addresses the actual problem. If an automated repair changes intentional openings or internal geometry, undo it and reassess whether that feature is meant to remain.

- Preserve the source: Save the original AI model or native project, then work on a copy.
- Check destination support: Confirm which formats the target slicer or print utility currently imports, then export to one of those formats.
- Inspect the mesh: For a solid body, check closure, orientation, validity, self-intersections and any separate shells.
- Repair selectively: Use an operation suited to the defect; review the preview and compare the repaired geometry with the original.
- Reopen the export in the target app: Check dimensions, orientation, shells and how the app interprets the model before generating or sending a print job.
The final import check is a practical safeguard: format conversion and mesh repair address different issues, and the receiving application is where you can see how the exported file is interpreted.
