Expect two separate timelines and a stack of charges. The blockchain transfer may become final in seconds on some networks, about 15–30 minutes on many mainstream routes, or several hours on slower routes. Getting fiat into the recipient’s bank account can take longer because redemption, compliance review, foreign-exchange conversion, bank cutoffs and local payout rails happen after the on-chain transaction.
The only dependable way to price a transfer is to quote the exact asset, source and destination chains, transfer mode, payout currency and destination bank route. “Gas” is only one line item; redemption, FX, correspondent-bank and provider fees can determine the real total.
Stablecoin transfers have two clocks
A cross-border stablecoin payment usually contains an on-chain leg and, when the recipient wants fiat, an off-chain settlement leg. They can finish at very different times.
Blockchain finality
The on-chain leg is complete when the source-chain transaction is confirmed and any required burn, bridge or transfer operation has reached finality. On a fast network this can take seconds. Mainstream routes often take roughly 15–30 minutes, while a slower or congested route can take hours.

For a bridged USDC transfer, finality is not established by the source transaction alone. The source-chain burn must be confirmed and the destination-chain mint must also be confirmed. Once both conditions are met, the transaction is considered complete and cannot be changed or reversed under the documented settlement-finality definition.
Fiat settlement
If the recipient keeps the stablecoin in a wallet, blockchain finality may be the practical endpoint. If the recipient asks for euros, dollars or another fiat currency in a bank account, the provider still has to redeem the tokens, perform compliance checks, convert currencies when necessary and send the payout through banking rails. A bank credit can therefore arrive hours or days after the blockchain transfer is final.
What you pay: the complete fee stack
Compare the all-in amount shown for the exact route rather than a generic stablecoin fee. A quote can contain several independent charges.
1. Network or gas fee
The blockchain charges a fee for processing the transaction. It is normally paid in the network’s native token, even when the transferred asset is USDC or another stablecoin. The amount changes with congestion, transaction complexity and the chain’s fee market. A low stablecoin transfer fee does not mean the total route is cheap if the destination payout has expensive banking charges.
2. Bridge or fast-transfer fee
A cross-chain route may use a bridge or an issuer’s transfer service. A fast mode can add a separate charge in exchange for shorter processing. The provider should show this amount before confirmation; do not assume that a route advertised as “instant” includes the same fee as its standard mode.

3. Issuer mint or redemption fee
When tokens are created or converted back to fiat, the issuer or payment provider may charge a service fee. Circle’s redemption documentation lists a 5-basis-point gross redemption fee, equal to 0.05% of the redeemed amount, and says processing can take up to two business days before bank settlement. That figure applies to the documented redemption service and should not be treated as a universal fee for every issuer, asset or customer type.
4. Foreign-exchange spread and conversion charge
If the sender pays in one currency and the recipient receives another, the quoted exchange rate may include a spread in addition to an explicit conversion fee. Ask whether the rate is the mid-market rate, a marked-up rate or a provider-specific rate. A route with a small visible transfer fee can still cost more through an unfavorable FX rate.
5. Bank, correspondent and local-payout fees
The receiving bank, sending bank, correspondent banks and local payout partner can each deduct a charge. Correspondent networks may involve multiple intermediaries; each intermediary can add a fee and a day or more to a processing leg. The recipient may receive less than the amount displayed at the start if the route uses shared-fee or recipient-pays instructions.
6. Provider and compliance charges
A platform can add a service, payout, account or compliance fee. Enhanced due-diligence reviews may delay or change a quote, particularly for large transfers, unusual counterparties or restricted jurisdictions. Check whether the displayed price includes tax, payout, screening and any minimum or maximum limits.
| Fee component | What triggers it | What to verify before sending |
|---|---|---|
| Network fee | On-chain transaction processing | Chain, native-token fee, congestion and who pays it |
| Bridge or fast mode | Cross-chain movement or accelerated processing | Standard versus fast option and route-specific charge |
| Mint or redemption | Creating tokens or converting them to fiat | Issuer schedule, basis points, minimums and processing conditions |
| FX spread or conversion | Changing one fiat currency into another | Rate source, spread and any separate conversion fee |
| Bank and correspondent fees | Wire and intermediary-bank processing | OUR, SHA or BEN-style fee treatment, destination deductions and intermediary count |
| Provider or compliance charge | Platform service, screening or enhanced review | Account tier, geography, limits and possible manual-review fees |

Why a completed blockchain transfer may not reach the bank
Redemption queue
The provider may need to receive and burn the stablecoin before releasing fiat. The documented Circle process allows up to two business days for processing before bank settlement. A chain confirmation therefore starts the redemption workflow; it does not end it.
Compliance and sanctions screening
Providers and banks can pause a payout for identity checks, source-of-funds questions, sanctions screening or transaction monitoring. A review can happen after the on-chain transfer is final and may require documents or a beneficiary correction.
Bank cutoffs, weekends and holidays
Bank wires often move only during local business hours. A transfer submitted after a cutoff, on a weekend or during a banking holiday may wait for the next processing window even when the provider has released it.
Liquidity and currency conversion
The payout partner may need liquidity in the destination currency or may route the payment through an additional conversion step. Lack of local liquidity can extend the queue or cause the provider to request a different payout method.

Correspondent routing
International payments can pass through several intermediary banks. Each one can add a fee, a screening step or a processing day. The destination bank may also apply its own posting schedule after receiving the wire.
How to calculate the all-in cost before confirming
- Define the exact route. Record the stablecoin, source chain, destination chain, source amount, destination currency and payout method. “USDC transfer” is incomplete without the chain and settlement destination.
- Choose standard or fast mode. Compare the displayed completion estimate and the separate fee for each mode. If fast mode is unavailable, treat the standard estimate as the applicable option rather than assuming acceleration.
- Capture the network charge. Note whether the quote includes gas or whether the sender must supply the native token separately.
- Check issuer and provider charges. Look for mint, burn, redemption, service, account and compliance fees, including basis-point charges and minimums.
- Inspect the FX calculation. Compare the quoted rate with a reference market rate and identify any spread or fixed conversion charge. Record the currency that will actually arrive.
- Read payout terms. Verify bank, correspondent and local-payout fees, who bears them, supported countries, beneficiary requirements and whether the recipient can receive the full nominal amount.
- Check the service window. Confirm business-day definitions, daily cutoffs, weekends, holidays and any stated manual-review window.
- Save the confirmation quote. Keep the transaction ID, quoted amount, fee breakdown, exchange rate and promised service window in case the payout is delayed or disputed.
The net amount is the source value minus network, bridge, issuer, provider, FX and payout deductions. A route is only “cheaper” when both its total deductions and the amount actually credited are better.
How stablecoin routes compare with traditional cross-border payments
Circle cited a World Bank figure saying traditional cross-border payments can cost more than 6% and take longer than one business day. That benchmark describes a broad traditional-payment experience, not a guaranteed price or time for every bank corridor. Stablecoins can reduce the time and number of intermediaries on the digital-asset leg, but redemption, FX and bank payout costs remain.
For institutions, Circle describes its Payments Network as connecting financial institutions for cross-border payments using USDC, EURC and other regulated payment stablecoins. Availability, pricing, supported geographies and onboarding requirements depend on the participating provider and should be verified for the intended corridor.

Requirements and limits to check
- Identity verification: The sender, recipient or business may need completed know-your-customer checks before transfer or redemption.
- Jurisdiction support: A stablecoin or payout currency can be supported in one country and unavailable in another.
- Asset and chain match: Sending on an unsupported chain or to an incompatible address can make recovery difficult or impossible.
- Account and transaction limits: Daily, monthly, per-transfer and redemption limits can force a split transfer or manual approval.
- Beneficiary data: Legal name, account number, routing code, address and purpose-of-payment fields must match bank records.
- Liquidity and cutoff rules: Confirm that the provider can pay the destination currency during the requested window.
Troubleshooting common delays
The source transaction is pending
Check the network explorer and the provider’s status page. A pending transaction may reflect insufficient gas, congestion, a replaced transaction or a provider queue. Do not submit a duplicate until the first transaction’s state is known.

The source burn is confirmed but no destination mint appears
Verify that the destination address and chain are supported and that the transfer mode is eligible. Supply the transaction ID to the provider; bridge settlement requires both source confirmation and destination mint confirmation.
The destination stablecoin is present but the bank payout is missing
Check whether redemption was initiated, whether compliance documents are outstanding and whether the stated processing window excludes weekends. Ask the provider for the redemption or payout reference, not only the blockchain transaction hash.
The bank received less than expected
Request a fee trace showing issuer, provider, correspondent and receiving-bank deductions, then compare it with the confirmation quote. Review the FX rate and whether the wire used shared or recipient-paid charges.

The transfer is rejected
Confirm beneficiary details, supported geography, account limits and the reason for rejection. If tokens were returned, verify the return chain and amount; if they were burned or sent to an unsupported address, escalate immediately with all transaction records.
A practical decision rule
Use a stablecoin route when the quoted all-in cost, expected bank-credit window and compliance requirements fit the payment’s purpose—not merely because the blockchain confirmation is fast. For a wallet-to-wallet payment, prioritize chain support, finality and network cost. For a bank payout, prioritize the net fiat amount, redemption window, FX rate, destination coverage and the provider’s ability to handle compliance and local rails. Always rely on the route-specific quote at confirmation because fees, availability and settlement times can change by asset, chain, geography and service mode.
