FASTech’s FACTORYworks was semiconductor manufacturing-execution-system (MES) software, while Digital AlphaServer systems supplied the server platform it ran on. Their 1997 combination paired factory-floor operations software with Digital’s 64-bit servers; it was an announced technology and services offering, not evidence of a currently available product.
What the FASTech–Digital combination involved
EE Times reported the announcement on July 10, 1997, with a July 9 dateline from Lincoln, Massachusetts. The two components served different roles:
| Component | Role in the offering |
|---|---|
| FASTech FACTORYworks | MES software for managing semiconductor shop-floor operations. |
| Digital AlphaServer systems | The 64-bit server platform on which FACTORYworks was deployed. |
The announcement described the combination as providing flexibility, capacity, and performance. It did not publish benchmarks or quantified results, so those benefits should be understood as the companies’ claims rather than measured comparisons.

Configuration tools and runtime applications
The software brought graphical configuration tools together with an integrated suite of runtime applications. FASTech described it as an integrated, top-to-bottom MES intended to support flexible and efficient management of shop-floor operations.
#1 Best Overall
- [ FHD Touchscreen Control ] - The Arrvel N15L6 industrial panel PC combines a 1920 x 1080 display with 10-point touch for viewing production data and navigating operator controls. Preinstalled Windows 11 Pro provides a platform for compatible HMI and machine-control software, MES/ERP access, PLM data viewing, and electronic work instructions (ESOP).
- [ Fanless Computing Performance ] - Equipped with a quad-core Intel N5095 processor up to 2.9 GHz, 8GB DDR4 RAM, and a 128GB M.2 SSD for production monitoring, data collection, and dashboard applications. The fanless design uses rear cooling fins to dissipate heat without fan noise, supporting quiet operation on the factory floor.
- [ Versatile Industrial Connectivity ] - Two RS232 DB9 ports connect serial and legacy industrial equipment. Gigabit Ethernet, built-in Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth provide wired and wireless connectivity. Peripheral connections include 2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA display outputs, plus line-out and microphone ports.
- [ Flexible VESA Mounting ] - This all-in-one touchscreen computer integrates the PC, display, and touch controls in a compact 14.64 x 8.83 x 1.96-inch housing. VESA mounting support allows installation on compatible wall, arm, or workstation mounts for machine-side HMI stations, production dashboards, and warehouse workstations.
- [ Industrial Build and Protection ] - The N15L6 features an aerospace-grade 6063-T5 aluminum enclosure that combines industrial durability with up to 50% better heat dissipation, helping deliver up to twice the CPU performance. Built for demanding industrial work areas, it is rated for operation from -10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F) and at 5%–95% non-condensing humidity, with an IP65-rated front panel that helps protect the operator-facing surface against dust and water exposure.
Three-tier architecture and integration scope
FACTORYworks used an object-oriented, client/server architecture organized in three tiers. It was designed to integrate with manufacturing equipment, production processes, and enterprise applications, connecting shop-floor activity with other systems across a manufacturing operation. The announcement describes the intended architecture and scope, but does not specify particular equipment interfaces, supported protocols, or integration limits.
What the AlphaServer contributed
Digital AlphaServer supplied the server foundation for the software. The 1997 announcement called it one of the platforms most popular among FACTORYworks users and said the pairing offered flexibility, capacity, and performance. It gives no system model, configuration, workload, or test data with which to evaluate those claims independently.

Partner and customer evidence
Digital’s MES Systems Integration group was designated a Premier FASTech partner, or FASTpartner, for implementing and delivering FASTech products in the United States and internationally. This indicates that the announcement included implementation services alongside the software-and-server pairing.
Hyundai’s LCD Division in Korea had selected FACTORYworks running on Digital Unix AlphaServers, with Digital systems-integration services, for its facility. This is a specific example of a selection; the announcement does not provide deployment results, production figures, or evidence that other Hyundai divisions used the same system.
