You can start a YouTube livestream with a phone or with a computer and webcam; you do not need a studio or expensive gear. Choose the setup that fits what you want to show: mobile for a quick on-the-go broadcast, a webcam for a straightforward computer stream, or an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, and more production control. The most important upgrade for any computer setup is often a reliable upload connection—not another camera.
Choose your streaming route first

YouTube supports all three routes. A camera, external microphone, headphones, mixer, or hardware encoder is not automatically required: add equipment to solve a real need in your production.
Equipment for a mobile livestream
Start with the phone or tablet
A compatible phone or tablet and a usable network connection can provide both capture and broadcast for a mobile stream. Check signal strength where you plan to stream; a good connection in one location does not guarantee a good signal somewhere else.
Stabilize the shot if needed
A phone tripod or selfie stick can reduce camera shake when you need a fixed shot. It is an optional accessory, not a YouTube requirement. If you are moving while filming, consider how securely you can hold the device and whether the framing will remain usable.

Equipment for a computer webcam stream
Use a built-in or USB webcam
You need a computer with a webcam for YouTube’s webcam route. If the computer has no camera, or its built-in camera is not suitable for your shot, a USB webcam is a straightforward option. You do not need a separate camera just because you are streaming from a computer.
Keep the audio environment in mind
For a basic stream, begin with the audio input available on your computer or webcam and check how it sounds in a test. A quiet recording space can matter more than adding equipment immediately. If the built-in audio is not clear enough for your use, an external microphone is an optional upgrade.

Equipment for an encoder setup
Choose software or hardware encoding
An encoder converts video into a digital stream for YouTube. Encoder software on a computer can handle sources such as gameplay or a screen, while a standalone hardware encoder may suit a production built around external video equipment. Choose based on the inputs and workflow you actually need; a multi-camera production may call for more equipment than a single-camera gameplay stream.
Add only the sources your production needs
Common computer encoder examples include an external microphone, webcam, and headphones. More involved setups may add cameras, a mixer, or hardware encoding. Before buying anything, check that the encoder and computer can accept the devices you intend to connect, and that your chosen software or hardware supports your planned workflow.

- External microphone: useful when you need a more deliberate audio setup; a USB microphone is one possible computer option, not a platform requirement.
- Webcam or camera: useful if you want a presenter on screen or additional camera angles.
- Headphones: useful for monitoring audio and catching problems during setup.
- Mixer: an option when you need to manage multiple audio sources or a more involved production.
Plan your connection and encoder settings
Test upload capacity, not just download speed
Run an upload speed test and choose a stream quality your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming where practical. Leave capacity for other activity on the network instead of treating an encoder bitrate as the internet-plan speed you must buy: the stream has to remain stable under the conditions in which you will actually broadcast.
Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance provides different recommendations according to resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the recommended bitrate setting is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s encoder settings, not universal minimum internet speeds; the same guidance lists minimum bitrate settings of 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. Match the bitrate to your real upload capacity and test the stream rather than assuming a connection can sustain a setting continuously.

Check the other encoder parameters
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate mode: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
HDR is an advanced case, not a basic setup requirement. YouTube’s current Live HDR guidance supports H.265 (HEVC) and requires a compatible source and encoder; confirm that your equipment and workflow meet those requirements before planning an HDR broadcast.
Check channel eligibility and test before going public
- Confirm you can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take time, so check access well before an event.
- Select the route. Decide whether you will use mobile, webcam, or an encoder based on the content and equipment you have.
- Connect your intended gear. Confirm the computer, encoder, microphone, camera, headphones, and any other production devices are recognized and selected correctly.
- Test your upload connection and settings. Use a bitrate appropriate to the available upload capacity and your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Run an unlisted test. Use representative audio and movement. Check the preview, listen for audio problems, and monitor stream health before scheduling or starting the public broadcast.
- For mobile, check the location. Confirm signal strength where you will stream and stabilize the device if your shot needs to stay fixed.
Common setup problems and fixes
- The stream buffers or loses stability: the upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or competing network use may be consuming capacity. Test upload performance under realistic conditions, reduce the stream quality or bitrate, and use Ethernet for a computer setup where possible.
- The picture or sound is missing from the preview: check that the encoder or YouTube route is using the intended camera and audio device, that devices are connected, and that the source is active. Repeat the test after correcting the input selection.
- The mobile picture shakes: steady the phone or use an optional tripod or selfie stick for a fixed shot.
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel and its live-streaming eligibility in YouTube. Do not wait until broadcast day to enable first-time access.
- The encoder stream does not meet the intended quality: verify that the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval agree with the encoder’s settings and YouTube’s current guidance. If the connection is unreliable, lower the target rather than forcing a bitrate it cannot maintain.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Equipment and encoder settings do not grant rights to the material in a stream. Before broadcasting, make sure you have permission to use music, video, gameplay audio, or other material you did not create or license. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and channel restrictions before an event; compliance and eligibility are separate from having the right camera and connection.

If your plan is to keep a channel live with prerecorded video, confirm that you own or have permission to stream every asset and that the format complies with YouTube’s policies. Continuous playback is a different production use from a live camera broadcast; gear alone cannot resolve copyright or reused-content concerns.
