An M.2 slot can host more than storage: depending on the computer’s design, it may also accept a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card or a cellular WWAN module. M.2 describes a compact module and connector format—not a guarantee that every M.2 socket supports every kind of card. The motherboard or computer manual is the deciding guide.

What else can an M.2 slot do besides hold an SSD?

Some M.2 slots are designed for wireless networking, and some systems provide slots for cellular connectivity. A computer can even have separate M.2 sockets for an SSD and a Wi-Fi card: Lenovo’s system-board illustration labels those as distinct slots (Lenovo system-board illustration).

These examples show what M.2 can accommodate, not what any unverified slot will accept. Slot wiring, supported signals, card dimensions, firmware and platform restrictions all matter.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules

Motherboard makers document M.2 Key E slots for wireless modules. MSI lists a pre-installed wireless module in the Key E slot on its PRO B550M WIFI6E specifications. ASUS’s E500 G9 manual specifies an M.2 Wi-Fi module with an E-key and 2230 size for its designated Wi-Fi slot (ASUS E500 G9 User Manual).

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption

Those are examples of particular systems, not evidence that any E-key socket will work with any wireless card. Check the host’s supported module type and interfaces; some platforms have specific requirements such as CNVi. Confirm that suitable antenna connections are present, too.

Cellular WWAN modules

Some systems support M.2 cellular modems, often described as WWAN modules. For example, MSI’s MS-98N1 industrial-board guide describes a B-key slot for WWAN cards or SSDs and lists 5G module support (MSI MS-98N1 Industrial Computer Board User Guide). Supermicro’s A4SAN documentation describes B-key cellular-related capability for that board, including Nano SIM/5G and supported signaling options (Supermicro A4SAN M.2 Slots manual).

Kingston NV3 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD | PCIe 4.0 Gen 4x4 | Up to 6000 MB/s | SNV3S/1000G
  • Ideal for high speed, low power storage
  • Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
  • Includes Acronis cloning software
  • 5-year limited warranty

These are host-specific implementations; a B-key slot elsewhere is not automatically a 5G socket. A working cellular setup may also depend on modem support, SIM or eSIM arrangements, antennas, firmware, regional frequency bands and carrier compatibility.

Why the M.2 key is not enough to establish compatibility

The key is a physical notch that helps identify which modules can fit, but it does not by itself establish that the slot supplies the right electrical interface or that the system will support the card. Dell’s guide explains that M.2 cards and slots vary in key, dimensions and functionality (Dell guide to M.2 cards and slots).

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

Signaling can vary even between slots intended for similar-looking modules. MSI’s CF19 manual, for instance, documents an E-key slot with PCIe x1 and USB 2.0 and identifies CNVi support (MSI CF19 Expansion Slots manual). Supermicro’s A4SAN documentation likewise illustrates that its M-key, B-key and E-key slots have distinct supported signals, dimensions and functions. Neither document defines a universal rule for other systems.

Check the host before buying a card

Find the exact computer or motherboard model, then use its manual or specification page to verify each item below. A slot description or photograph can help identify the connector, but the host documentation is the authority on supported hardware.

  • Interfaces and module type: Check supported signals and any platform-specific requirement, such as CNVi.
  • Card dimensions and mounting: Match the card length and mounting point to the slot. ASUS’s E500 G9 Wi-Fi example, for instance, specifies an E-key 2230 module; that size should not be presumed for other hosts.
  • Antennas: For Wi-Fi or cellular cards, confirm the system has the necessary antenna connections and that the intended installation can use them.
  • WWAN service requirements: Verify the exact modem, SIM or eSIM arrangement, firmware, regional bands and carrier support for the host and network you plan to use.

Which type of card should you choose?

Choose by the job you need and the capabilities documented for your exact system. A Key E Wi-Fi card and a B-key WWAN module are different categories, not interchangeable alternatives. The table summarizes what to verify; it does not imply that every computer offers either option.

Card type Host documentation to verify Additional requirements
M.2 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module Wireless-slot role, key, supported signals or module type, and card length Required antenna connections; platform requirements such as CNVi where applicable
M.2 WWAN cellular module Explicit support for the exact modem and slot configuration; key, signals and card length SIM/eSIM, antennas, firmware, regional bands and carrier compatibility

If your system documents a compatible wireless slot, an M.2 Key E Wi-Fi card is a relevant option to investigate—but match its requirements to the host rather than buying by key or size alone. Consider a WWAN module only when the system documents support for that exact cellular hardware and service setup.
