Jamming does not guarantee that an FPV drone will crash. It transmits interference over frequencies used by the drone’s command, video, or GNSS links. The receiver may lose one link, several links, or only enough signal quality to become unreliable. What happens next is determined by the drone’s hardware, firmware, airframe, navigation sources, and failsafe settings: it might continue under pilot control, lose its video while still flying, hover, land, return home, follow its last route, or become uncontrolled.
A realistic simulator therefore models changing receiver conditions and navigation measurements over time, then applies the aircraft’s actual failsafe logic. Treating jamming as a single “on/off” switch produces misleading results.
Which systems on an FPV drone can be jammed?
An FPV aircraft normally depends on several radio and navigation functions that can be attacked separately. A jammer must overlap the frequency and modulation used by the target receiver; interference on an unrelated band may have little or no effect.
| Target | What the pilot or aircraft may experience | Why the result varies |
|---|---|---|
| Command-and-control (C2) link | Delayed or missing stick commands, a link-loss warning, or complete loss of pilot control. | Receiver sensitivity, frequency hopping, antenna orientation, transmit powers, and programmed failsafe behavior differ by system. |
| FPV video downlink | Static, frozen frames, severe latency, or a black screen while the aircraft may continue flying. | Video transmit power, bandwidth, digital error correction, antenna polarization, and whether C2 uses a separate bearer. |
| GNSS (GPS and other satellite navigation) | Loss of position, degraded navigation accuracy, disabled position-hold or autonomous functions, or a navigation warning. | The flight controller may use inertial sensors, visual navigation, another navigation source, or no autonomous fallback. |
| Multiple links | Simultaneous loss of control, video, and position information, producing the most difficult recovery scenario. | The jammer’s frequency coverage, power, antenna pattern, and geometry determine which receivers are actually denied. |
UK government counter-uncrewed-aircraft guidance describes radio-frequency jamming as an effector that “transmit[s] a signal which blocks the signal between the drone and its controller.” The same guidance distinguishes control-link interruption from video interference: denying C2 can trigger a programmed aircraft response, whereas denying video primarily removes the pilot’s ability to see and target the scene.

What happens when the command link is interrupted?
There is no universal FPV response. A multirotor, fixed-wing aircraft, and custom racing build can all react differently, and the same model can behave differently after a firmware or configuration change. Common outcomes include the following.
Hover or hold position
A flight controller may maintain attitude and, if it still has valid position data, attempt to hold its location. This consumes battery and is not equivalent to a safe landing. Wind, obstacles, and a loss of GNSS can turn a nominal hover into drift.
Return to a home location
Some systems initiate return-to-home after a configurable delay. The aircraft needs a stored home position and enough navigation information to follow the return route. If GNSS is also denied, the aircraft may be unable to execute the intended path or may switch to a less capable fallback.
Land where it is
A failsafe can command an immediate or delayed landing. Landing at the current position may protect the aircraft but can endanger people, vehicles, or property if the ground is unsuitable. The descent profile and trigger conditions are set by the aircraft’s firmware and configuration.
Continue the last command or mission
Some platforms continue a preplanned route or maintain the last flight mode for a period. An aircraft with inertial guidance can continue using gyroscopes and accelerometers when satellite navigation is unavailable, but inertial position error grows with time. A vehicle following its original path can therefore remain airborne without being under live pilot control.

Uncontrolled flight or crash
If the flight controller has no effective failsafe, loses the sensors required by its current mode, or runs out of energy while attempting recovery, the aircraft can drift, descend unpredictably, or crash. This is a possible outcome, not a guaranteed effect of jamming.
The UK guidance summarizes the uncertainty directly: response varies by make and model, airframe type, and programming. A claim that “jamming makes every FPV drone fall out of the sky” is therefore technically wrong.

What if only the video feed is jammed?
Video denial can occur while the command link remains usable. The pilot may see compression artifacts, a frozen image, or no picture at all, yet still be able to send control inputs. Continuing to fly by instruments or by a spotter may be possible for an experienced operator, but orientation and obstacle avoidance become much harder. Conversely, a clean video feed does not prove that C2 is healthy; the two links may use different frequencies, antennas, and receivers.
Digital links often degrade in stages as error correction is exhausted. A simulator should represent increasing latency, dropped frames, and reduced update rates before declaring a complete outage. An analog link may present progressively more noise rather than a discrete disconnect. These symptoms matter because the aircraft’s flight behavior can remain normal while the pilot’s information channel is failing.
What does GNSS jamming remove?
GNSS jamming raises the noise floor at satellite-navigation frequencies until the receiver cannot acquire or track the signals. The immediate effect is loss or degradation of location data, not automatic loss of attitude control. Gyroscopes, accelerometers, barometers, magnetometers, visual sensors, cellular links, satellite communications, or inertial navigation may still support some modes.

Without valid position data, many aircraft disable position hold, waypoint navigation, geofencing, or return-to-home. An inertial system can bridge a short outage, but its position estimate drifts because small sensor errors accumulate. A drone using another navigation method may continue its mission, while one that requires GNSS may enter a hover, land, or manual mode. The correct outcome depends on the flight stack’s documented logic.
How a jammer’s effectiveness is determined
Interference is a link-budget and geometry problem, not a fixed-radius effect.
- Frequency overlap: The transmitted energy must reach the receiver’s operating channel or a sufficiently harmful adjacent channel. A jammer aimed at a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi-style link will not necessarily affect a drone using 4G/5G, satellite communications, another band, or autonomous navigation.
- Received power: The relevant comparison is jammer power at the drone or controller versus the legitimate signal power. Distance, path loss, obstacles, reflections, and polarization all change that ratio.
- Antenna efficiency and pattern: Gain and orientation can concentrate energy in one direction, but sidelobes and reflections can create interference outside the intended beam.
- Receiver design: Frequency hopping, spread-spectrum processing, filtering, coding, and adjacent-channel rejection can delay or reduce disruption.
- Geometry and altitude: Line of sight, terrain, aircraft attitude, and the relative locations of jammer, drone, and pilot determine which receiver is exposed.
- Regional allocations: Control-link frequencies and permitted powers vary by country, so a result observed in one region cannot be generalized to another.
UK guidance gives a broad practical range from hundreds of metres to several kilometres for some systems, but explicitly treats that as conditional rather than a guaranteed specification. There is no responsible universal “jamming range” or population-wide FPV success rate. A worked operational example in the same guidance—an aircraft traveling 60 km/h detected at 2 km, yielding about two minutes of warning—illustrates planning arithmetic, not an average jamming performance.
Jamming versus spoofing
Jamming attempts to deny reception by adding interference. Spoofing transmits signals that imitate legitimate navigation or control signals so a receiver accepts false information. A jammer may make a GNSS receiver declare an outage; a spoofer may make it report a false position or time. The two threats can be combined, but they require different receiver models and produce different diagnostics. A simulator should not label every navigation anomaly “jamming.”
Collateral effects and legal limits
The same energy that disrupts a drone can affect unrelated equipment sharing the band. UK guidance lists wireless controllers and keyboards, internet-connected devices, security cameras, medical devices, vessel systems, and navigation equipment as possible victims. GNSS interference can affect navigation on other vessels and aircraft. A European Commission Joint Research Centre study characterized counter-UAS jammer emissions specifically to assess effects on nearby wireless communications and GNSS receivers.

Legality depends on jurisdiction, spectrum authorization, location, and purpose. UK guidance warns that possessing or operating jammers and spoofers may be illegal without authorization and that an operator can be liable for unintended effects. Any testing should take place only in an authorized, controlled environment with appropriate spectrum coordination, containment, and safety procedures. Do not infer that a laboratory demonstration permits use in public airspace or on shared frequencies.
How simulators represent jamming
A useful simulator separates the radio environment, receiver state, flight-control logic, and aircraft motion. Instead of toggling a binary “jammed” flag, it advances those states at each time step.
Inputs to the model
- Target link and center frequency, bandwidth, modulation, and hopping behavior.
- Interference power at the receiver, antenna gain and pattern, polarization, distance, altitude, and line-of-sight geometry.
- Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), adjacent-channel leakage, receiver sensitivity, filtering, coding, and tracking state.
- Outage onset, ramp time, duration, intermittent bursts, and recovery delay.
- GNSS measurement deviations, satellite visibility, pseudorange or timing errors, and inertial-sensor drift.
- Aircraft firmware rules: link-loss timeout, hover or land action, return-to-home trigger, navigation fallback, and battery limits.
Outputs to record
- C2 state, packet-loss rate, latency, and command freshness.
- Video availability, frame loss, latency, and pilot-view quality.
- GNSS validity, estimated position and velocity, navigation mode, and sensor-fusion status.
- Flight mode, failsafe transition, control-surface or motor commands, battery consumption, and trajectory.
- Position error, altitude error, time to recovery, and whether the aircraft enters an unsafe state.
The result should be a time series, not merely a pass/fail label. For example, a rising interference level may move a C2 link from stable to intermittent, trigger a timeout, and then cause a return-to-home transition. The trajectory after that transition depends on whether navigation remains valid.

An IEEE study of two UAV models reported SNR thresholds for stable, unstable, and disrupted command-and-control links under in-band and adjacent-band interference in the 2.4–2.5 GHz range. Those findings support a model with regions or probability transitions rather than an instantaneous cutoff. A practical implementation can map SNR and receiver state to packet-delivery probability, latency, and outage duration, then feed those values into the flight controller.

Modeling GNSS attacks with measurement injection
Iudice, Pascarella, Corraro, and Cuciniello’s 2024 paper, “A real/fast-time simulator for impact assessment of spoofing & jamming attacks on GNSS receivers,” describes injecting threat scenarios as deviations into actual GNSS measurements. The authors report operation in real-time and fast-time environments and flight demonstrations with an experimental vehicle.
This approach is more informative than simply turning GNSS off. The simulator can introduce gradual loss of measurements, biased pseudoranges, timing errors, or intermittent tracking and then observe how the navigation filter responds. A fast-time run accelerates many scenarios for analysis; a real-time run preserves timing relationships needed for hardware-in-the-loop or live controller interfaces.
A repeatable simulator workflow
- Define the aircraft baseline. Record airframe type, flight controller, firmware, sensors, navigation sources, radio bearers, failsafe timers, home-point rules, and battery model.
- Define the threat. Select C2, video, GNSS, or a combination; specify frequency overlap, interference waveform, power at the receiver, antenna geometry, start time, and duration.
- Run a no-interference case. Establish normal packet rates, video latency, navigation error, and trajectory so later changes have a reference.
- Apply a graded interference profile. Increase interference gradually or use bursts. Record SNR, packet loss, receiver tracking state, and video quality at each step.
- Execute the aircraft’s real failsafe logic. Do not substitute an assumed response. Model the configured timeout and resulting mode transition, including return-to-home, land, hover, or continuation.
- Repeat across geometry and alternatives. Vary range, altitude, antenna orientation, frequency, and whether the aircraft has cellular, satellite, inertial, or visual backups.
- Validate the model. Compare outputs with authorized flight tests, receiver logs, or hardware-in-the-loop data. Report uncertainty and the conditions under which the comparison was made.
Why software-defined radio is useful in experiments
Software-defined-radio equipment allows researchers to change interference waveforms and scenario parameters rapidly. That makes controlled, repeatable sweeps of frequency, bandwidth, power, duty cycle, and timing practical without rebuilding the entire test setup. SDR does not remove the need for authorization, shielding, filtering, or spectrum monitoring; it simply makes the test stimulus more configurable.
How to compare real systems or simulation tools
| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Target coverage | Does it model or affect C2, video, GNSS, or several links, and are the frequencies and hopping modes documented? |
| Power and geometry | Are effective received power, antenna pattern, range conditions, terrain, and altitude stated? |
| Alternate bearers | Does the aircraft switch to 4G/5G, satellite, inertial, visual, or another autonomous mode? |
| Failsafe fidelity | Are the actual firmware timers and actions represented, including battery and home-point constraints? |
| Execution mode | Can it run in real time and accelerated time, and can it interface with hardware-in-the-loop? |
| Repeatability | Can the same waveform, geometry, and random seed be replayed to compare configurations? |
| Validation | Are results checked against receiver logs, controlled flight demonstrations, or other measured data? |
| Safety and compliance | Does the test plan control emissions, protect nearby systems, and document legal authorization? |
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Published guidance and studies establish mechanisms, conditional ranges, receiver thresholds, and modeling methods. They do not establish a universal probability that an FPV drone will be stopped, a guaranteed distance at which every jammer works, or one standard response after link loss. Any operational prediction must identify the aircraft, firmware, links, frequencies, antenna geometry, interference level, navigation state, and failsafe configuration used to produce it.
