Watch a dashboard, not a single number. The most useful early-warning mix is the Treasury yield-curve slope, weekly initial unemployment claims and layoff measures, The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index (LEI), and corporate credit spreads. Then use unemployment, household income and spending, production, inflation, and monetary-policy conditions to confirm whether weakness is broad. An inversion, falling LEI, or rise in claims is a warning that needs corroboration—not proof that a recession has started.
This guide is U.S.-focused. Economic releases are revised and change every week or month, so take current readings from the latest official release and record the release date alongside each value.
A practical recession-warning dashboard
Different indicators answer different questions. Market prices can warn months ahead but may send false alarms; labor data react quickly once employers begin cutting; composite indexes reduce dependence on one series; and production or spending data show whether weakness has spread through the economy.

| Indicator | What a concerning move looks like | Typical timing and frequency | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treasury yield-curve slope | Long-term yields fall below short-term yields (an inversion) or the curve flattens sharply. | Long-leading signal; market data are available daily. New York Fed research finds the strongest relative performance about two to six quarters ahead. | Timing is ambiguous, and an inversion alone does not establish that a recession is imminent. |
| Initial unemployment claims and layoffs | A persistent upward trend, especially across several weeks, rather than one noisy spike. | Claims are weekly; layoff measures can be weekly or monthly. | Holiday effects, weather, strikes, disasters, and temporary industry shocks can distort individual releases. |
| Leading Economic Index (LEI) | Broad, sustained declines across its six-month growth rate and diffusion measure. | Composite index released monthly. | It is revised, and its rule is a warning framework rather than a guaranteed forecast. |
| Corporate credit spreads | Spreads widen as investors demand more compensation for default and liquidity risk. | Market-based and available daily. | Spreads can widen for financial-market reasons that do not become a broad economic contraction. |
| Unemployment, income, spending and production | Weakness becomes persistent and spreads across households, businesses and industries. | Mostly monthly or quarterly, with revisions. | These are confirmation and context measures; they are not a precise countdown clock. |
Federal Reserve research emphasizes that advance prediction remains difficult. A 2026 Federal Reserve Notes discussion states: “Although the Bayesian Markov-switching model is effective for interpreting history, predicting a recession in advance still remains as a challenging task and is an ongoing research topic among economists.” Treat every signal as evidence that must be weighed with the rest of the dashboard.

Yield curve: the longest-leading market warning
What to measure
The yield curve compares interest rates on Treasury securities with different maturities. A common recession gauge is the long-minus-short spread, such as a 10-year Treasury yield minus a short-term Treasury yield. When the short-term rate is higher, the spread is negative and the curve is inverted. A rapid move toward zero is a flattening warning even before the spread turns negative.
Why the signal can lead
Short-term rates are heavily influenced by current and expected central-bank policy, while longer-term yields incorporate expectations for future growth, inflation and policy. An inversion can therefore indicate that investors expect today’s restrictive conditions to slow the economy later. New York Fed research reports that the yield curve significantly outperforms other financial and macroeconomic indicators over a horizon of roughly two to six quarters.
How to use it without overinterpreting it
- Track the same maturity spread consistently; switching between spreads can create a misleading trend.
- Record whether the curve is flattening, inverted, or re-steepening, and note whether re-steepening comes from falling long rates or rising short rates.
- Treat the curve as a long-lead alert. Pair it with labor, credit and demand data before declaring that a downturn is underway.
The curve does not specify the month a recession will begin. Its lead time varies, and unusual inflation or policy conditions can change the relationship between rates and real activity. Federal Reserve work therefore cautions against using the yield curve alone.

Initial claims
Initial unemployment claims count new applications for unemployment benefits. They are released weekly, making them one of the quickest broad indicators of labor-market deterioration. A single jump is weak evidence because claims are affected by seasonal adjustment, holidays, weather, disasters and administrative changes. A sustained rise over several releases is more informative.

Layoff measures
Layoff announcements and other layoff measures can reveal employer retrenchment before the unemployment rate moves materially. Look for breadth across industries and regions rather than one high-profile event. Claims and layoffs are explicitly identified as recession-signal measures, and claims are also one component of the LEI.
A simple weekly test
- Save the latest initial-claims release date and value.
- Compare it with the prior several weeks, using the same seasonally adjusted series.
- Check whether the increase is broad or concentrated in a temporary event or one industry.
- Look for confirmation in continuing claims, job losses, hours worked, income or spending before treating the move as a recession signal.
Claims can turn before the unemployment rate because employers may reduce hiring or hours before widespread separations. They are still noisy, so the direction and persistence matter more than a single record.
The Leading Economic Index and the 3Ds rule
What the LEI contains
The Conference Board describes the LEI as an early indication of significant business-cycle turning points and near-term economic direction. It combines several forward-looking series, including unemployment claims, interest-rate spreads, manufacturing new orders, housing permits, stock prices and consumer expectations. Combining components is intended to reveal a common turning point more clearly than any one component.
How to read the 3Ds warning rule
The Conference Board’s 3Ds framework flags a serious warning when two conditions occur together:

- The six-month diffusion index is at or below 50.
- The LEI’s six-month growth rate, expressed at an annualized rate, falls below −4.3%.
The diffusion index measures how broadly components are improving or deteriorating; a reading at or below 50 means increases are no longer dominant across the basket. The −4.3% threshold applies to the annualized six-month growth rate, not to a single month’s percentage change.
What the LEI can and cannot tell you
A falling LEI is a broad warning because several leading components are weakening at once. It does not date a recession, guarantee that one will occur, or replace the underlying releases. Check the publication date, revisions and the component pattern. A decline driven by a narrow group of financial variables carries a different interpretation from a decline that also includes orders, permits, claims and expectations.
Credit spreads: a financing-stress gauge
A credit spread is the extra yield investors demand over a comparable Treasury security. When corporate spreads widen, borrowing becomes more expensive or less available for businesses. That can reduce investment, hiring and inventory financing. Federal Reserve research links wider spreads with higher modeled recession probability.

A gradual change may reflect normal repricing; a rapid, broad widening across credit-quality categories can signal a tightening in financial conditions. Spreads are market expectations, not proof of future defaults. They can also be driven by overseas shocks, banking stress or changes in market liquidity, so compare them with the yield curve, claims and real-economy data.

Confirmation indicators: proving that weakness is broad
Unemployment and labor utilization
The unemployment rate is a lagging-to-coincident measure compared with claims. A sustained rise, accompanied by falling employment or hours, indicates that labor weakness has moved beyond initial layoffs. A stable unemployment rate can conceal a deteriorating picture if participation or hours are changing, so inspect the broader labor release.
Income and consumer spending
Household income and real consumer spending show whether consumers can continue supporting demand. Watch for persistent declines after adjusting for inflation, not a single weak month. Spending concentrated in necessities can remain firm while discretionary categories weaken, so the composition matters.
Industrial production and business activity
Industrial production, manufacturing orders and related output data show whether businesses are cutting production and investment. A recession signal is stronger when declines extend beyond one sector and persist across several releases.

High inflation, an overheated economy and a shift from accommodative to restrictive monetary policy have preceded some downturns. These conditions help explain why growth may slow, but they do not establish that a recession has begun. Falling inflation can coexist with weak demand, while high inflation can coexist with expanding output; interpret price data alongside real activity and labor measures.

How to combine the indicators
Use lead time, breadth, frequency, revision risk and false-signal risk to decide how much weight to give each measure.
| Dashboard pattern | Reasonable interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Curve inversion only | Long-horizon financial warning; timing remains uncertain. | Watch claims, credit spreads and the LEI for confirmation. |
| Claims rising for several weeks, but spending and production firm | Early labor stress or a sector-specific shock is possible. | Check the breadth of layoffs, continuing claims and hours worked. |
| LEI declines and the 3Ds conditions are met | Broad forward-looking deterioration and elevated recession risk. | Inspect component contributions, revisions and coincident activity. |
| Spreads widen quickly alongside an inverted curve | Financial conditions are tightening and downside risk is higher. | Look for effects on lending, business investment and employment. |
| Weakness in unemployment, income, spending and production | Downturn conditions are spreading through the real economy. | Follow official releases and the eventual NBER dating decision. |
A useful operating rule is to require signals from at least two different channels—such as markets plus labor, or labor plus demand—before changing a forecast or business plan. This is not a statistical law; it is a safeguard against acting on one volatile release.
A monitoring routine that keeps the data comparable
- Set a release calendar. Check weekly claims and market spreads frequently; review the LEI, employment, spending, production and inflation on their official monthly or quarterly schedules.
- Record the vintage. Write down the release date, geography, series definition and value. Revisions can change the historical picture.
- Separate signal from context. Put yield-curve and spread movements in a market column, claims and layoffs in a labor column, and output and spending in a real-activity column.
- Check persistence. Prefer multi-week or multi-month trends to isolated changes.
- Check breadth. Ask whether deterioration appears across industries, regions and households.
- Document the decision. If you change a forecast, budget or risk plan, note which indicators moved and what evidence would reverse that decision.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling a recession from one inversion. The curve has a strong long-leading record but uncertain timing. Require corroboration.
- Reacting to one claims release. Examine the trend and seasonal or administrative explanations.
- Treating the LEI 3Ds rule as a guarantee. It is a warning framework with defined thresholds, not an automatic recession declaration.
- Ignoring revisions. Early estimates for employment, spending, production and composite indexes can change.
- Confusing inflation with contraction. Inflation describes price changes; recession dating depends on broad economic activity.
- Using a current reading without a date. Every value should carry its release date because conditions change continuously.
What counts as an official recession?
The National Bureau of Economic Research’s Business Cycle Dating Committee defines a recession as “a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months.” The committee makes a broad, retrospective judgment using multiple measures; it is not a real-time trigger based on a single indicator. That is why a dashboard can identify rising risk before an official announcement, while the official date may be assigned only after the evidence is clear.

Bottom line
Start with the yield curve for long-lead information, weekly claims and layoffs for fast labor evidence, the LEI for a combined forward view, and credit spreads for financing stress. Use unemployment, income, spending, production and inflation to test whether the warning has become broad and persistent. No indicator reliably dates a recession by itself; confidence should rise only when independent signals deteriorate together.
