Steam-turbine stocks rise or fall on a chain of factors rather than one headline metric: electricity-demand growth creates the need for generation, plant developers place equipment and service orders, those orders build backlog, and the backlog only creates shareholder value if it converts on schedule, at sound margins, and with a substantial aftermarket stream. Because the largest suppliers also sell gas turbines, generators, grid equipment, nuclear systems and digital services, reported company totals are not pure steam-turbine exposure.
Start with the demand chain
A useful way to analyze a turbine manufacturer is to follow the money upstream to downstream. Power-system requirements influence project development; projects generate equipment or service orders; orders become backlog; backlog is converted into revenue and cash; and the installed fleet creates maintenance, parts and upgrade work for years afterward.
Electricity demand and reliability requirements
The upstream driver is the need to produce dependable electricity or useful industrial heat and mechanical power. Load can grow through electrification, industrial expansion, digital infrastructure and population growth. At the same time, utilities and industrial operators must maintain reserve margins and replace aging equipment. A market can therefore support turbine investment even when total electricity consumption is flat if older plants need refurbishment, repowering or replacement.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported approximately 4,429 billion kWh of utility-scale generation in 2025. Natural gas accounted for 40.0% of utility-scale generating capacity, while fossil fuels produced about 58% of utility-scale generation. Those figures describe the generation system in which equipment spending occurs; they do not identify how much of that spending goes to steam turbines.

Power-plant and industrial orders
Orders are the first corporate indicator investors can see, but they are not all the same. A firm equipment order, a framework agreement, a reservation of manufacturing capacity, a long-term service agreement and a customer announcement that has not yet converted to a contract carry different levels of certainty. Long-cycle plant projects may generate deposits and production commitments well before revenue is recognized. Conversely, an announced project can be delayed, renegotiated or cancelled before it becomes profitable work.
Orders should therefore be read alongside revenue, cash flow, contract terms and the expected delivery schedule. A surge in bookings can be positive when it fills factories with well-priced work, but it can destroy value if the company accepts fixed-price projects without adequate protection for labor, materials or engineering costs.
Backlog conversion
Backlog provides visibility into future work and helps a manufacturer plan factories, suppliers and engineers. It is not guaranteed revenue or profit. The critical question is how much of the reported balance is firm, when it is scheduled for delivery, and what margin is embedded in it.
For example, GE Vernova reported 2025 orders of $59 billion, revenue of $38 billion, adjusted EBITDA of $3.2 billion and free cash flow of $3.7 billion. It said backlog grew more than 25% to $150 billion and that equipment margins in backlog increased significantly. In its second-quarter 2026 filing, the company reported $24.2 billion of orders, up 88% organically, and backlog of $176 billion. Those figures demonstrate why investors monitor order momentum, but the totals span the company’s portfolio and should not be treated as steam-turbine-only figures.
Siemens Energy reported €58.9 billion of group order intake and €138 billion of group order backlog for fiscal 2025, with €39.1 billion of revenue. Its Gas Services business reported a €54 billion backlog, approximately 60% of which was service-related. Again, the group total includes multiple energy technologies; the segment detail is more informative for judging recurring service exposure.
Why margins matter as much as volume
Power-equipment profitability is operational and mix-sensitive. The main influences are contract pricing, escalation clauses, steel and specialty-component costs, factory utilization, engineering complexity, warranty provisions, project execution, currency and customer bargaining power. A company can post record orders and still disappoint investors if it must rework equipment, absorb supplier inflation or reserve for loss-making contracts.

Backlog mix is especially important. Service work generally has a different cost profile and delivery pattern from a new turbine or generator. Siemens Energy reported a 12.4% profit margin for Industrial Steam Turbines & Generators in the first half of fiscal 2025, compared with 9.5% in the prior-year period. The company attributed broader Transformation of Industry improvement to higher volume, particularly in services, stronger operating performance and the higher margin of processed backlog.

When reviewing a results release, connect order growth with margin direction. Improving orders plus rising backlog margins can indicate pricing discipline and better mix. Improving orders plus falling margins may signal aggressive bidding, execution problems or inflation that contracts do not recover. Cash conversion is the final check: accounting profit that remains tied up in inventory, contract assets or receivables is less valuable than profit converted into cash.
Aftermarket revenue can be the durable profit engine
A turbine sale creates an installed asset that may require decades of inspections, outages, parts, controls work, efficiency upgrades and life-extension projects. Common aftermarket activities include planned maintenance, component replacement, repairs, monitoring, digital diagnostics and long-term service agreements.
Service revenue can be more recurring than new-equipment revenue because maintenance intervals are linked to operating hours and fleet age rather than to a single construction decision. It can also offer installed-base visibility and potentially better economics. However, service is not risk-free. Fleet utilization, customer maintenance budgets, contract terms, parts availability, technical performance and the OEM’s ability to defend its installed base all affect results.
Siemens Energy identified €30 billion of long-term service opportunities over the next 20 years and reported that roughly 60% of Gas Services backlog was service-related. It also reported 194 gas turbines sold in fiscal 2025 and an all-time-record Gas Services backlog of €54 billion. These are company-specific Gas Services figures, not an industry-wide aftermarket-margin benchmark.
Steam turbines serve more markets than coal plants
Steam-turbine exposure is broader than the traditional image of a large coal-fired utility. Siemens describes steam turbines from 10 kW to 1,900 MW for generators, pumps, compressors, fans, solar-thermal facilities, industrial plants and combined-cycle configurations. Steam cycles can also use heat from nuclear reactors, waste-heat recovery, cogeneration and other thermal processes.

This breadth matters for investors because a company can benefit from industrial investment or efficiency upgrades even when coal construction is declining. It also means that a headline about a turbine supplier may relate to gas-fired generation, a generator, grid hardware, nuclear work or digital services rather than a steam turbine.
Combined-cycle and cogeneration applications
In a combined-cycle plant, a gas turbine produces electricity and its exhaust heat generates steam for a steam turbine. The steam turbine increases total plant efficiency without requiring a separate fuel source for the steam cycle. Industrial cogeneration uses a similar principle to provide electricity and process heat at a factory or campus.
Solar thermal, nuclear and industrial systems
Steam turbines can convert heat from solar-thermal collectors, nuclear reactors or industrial waste streams into mechanical power. These projects have different construction schedules, regulatory requirements and service patterns, so exposure should be identified by application rather than inferred from the word “turbine” alone.

Data centers and AI infrastructure add a rapidly growing source of electricity demand. Their operators require high availability, and grid interconnection queues or local transmission constraints can encourage on-site generation, additional reserve capacity or faster-to-deploy dispatchable resources. That can create orders for turbines, generators, transformers, switchgear, storage and controls as an integrated package.
Data-center demand does not automatically translate into steam-turbine revenue. A project may use a gas turbine, a combined-cycle plant, reciprocating engines, renewable generation with storage or a utility connection. Siemens Energy’s data-center solutions include industrial and large steam turbines, combined-cycle plants, generators, transformers, switchgear, storage and digitalized assets. The investment question is therefore whether a supplier captures the complete electrical and thermal system, not whether every data-center project buys a steam turbine.
Siemens Energy stated that the gas-turbine market was expected to remain elevated until at least 2035, citing government initiatives, coal-to-gas transitions and data-center demand. That statement supports a broad dispatchable-power thesis, but it should not be presented as a direct forecast for steam-turbine unit sales.

What to compare between turbine-related stocks
Use the following dimensions when comparing companies. Each one answers a different risk or return question.

Measure how much revenue and backlog comes from recurring service, upgrades and parts versus one-time equipment. A service-heavy company may have steadier visibility, while an equipment-heavy company may benefit more from a construction upcycle but face larger project and working-capital swings.
Backlog quality
Separate firm orders from reservations or conditional commitments. Review delivery timing, cancellation rights, customer concentration, geography, fuel and technology mix, pricing protection and the margin expected when the work is processed.
Steam-turbine exposure
Identify whether exposure is utility steam, industrial steam, nuclear, combined-cycle, solar thermal, waste-heat recovery or another application. Do not use total-company backlog as a proxy for steam-turbine backlog when the supplier also sells unrelated equipment.
Diversification
Gas turbines, generators, grid equipment, electrification, wind, nuclear and digital services can reduce dependence on one market. They can also make reported results harder to interpret because a strong order quarter in one division may mask weakness in another.
Execution and cash conversion
Check delivery performance, warranty costs, project overruns, factory capacity, inventory, contract assets and working capital. Long-cycle projects can consume cash before milestone payments arrive. A balance sheet with enough liquidity to fund engineering, inventory and factories is a competitive advantage.

Installed-base strength
Consider fleet size, age, utilization, geographic reach and the OEM’s ability to win service work. A large installed base is valuable only if customers continue operating the equipment and the manufacturer can supply parts and technical support at competitive terms.
End-market concentration
Utilities, industrial customers, data centers, nuclear projects, renewable integration and emerging-market infrastructure have different regulatory, financing and timing risks. Concentration can amplify both upside and downside.

- Classify the booking. Determine whether it is a firm equipment order, framework agreement, reservation, service contract, upgrade or customer announcement that has not yet converted.
- Read the schedule. Identify expected shipment, commissioning and service dates. A large balance due many years out has less near-term earnings value than a smaller balance shipping next year.
- Test margin quality. Look for disclosed backlog margins, price escalation, fixed-price exposure and evidence that processed backlog is becoming more or less profitable.
- Check cancellation and customer risk. Review deposits, termination rights, project financing, customer concentration and exposure to a single geography or fuel type.
- Estimate cash needs. Compare the project schedule with inventory, supplier commitments, factory investment and milestone collections.
- Separate equipment from service. Service content can improve recurring revenue and margins, but it still depends on fleet utilization and contract economics.
- Reconcile backlog with revenue. Ask how much backlog converted during the period and whether revenue growth required unusually high working capital.
Common traps in steam-turbine stock analysis
- Treating backlog as guaranteed profit: backlog can be delayed, repriced, cancelled or loss-making.
- Calling a diversified company a steam-turbine pure play: group orders and backlog may include gas, grid, generator, nuclear and digital businesses.
- Using electricity-generation totals as a market forecast: national generation and capacity figures do not reveal turbine technology demand.
- Assuming data-center growth means steam-turbine growth: data centers can use several generation and grid architectures.
- Ignoring working capital: large projects may require inventory and engineering spending long before cash collection.
- Confusing service backlog with guaranteed recurring revenue: maintenance timing, utilization, contract terms and customer budgets still matter.
- Comparing margins without matching periods and segments: a first-half segment margin cannot be compared casually with a full-year group margin.
- Expecting a universal market-share benchmark: no single authoritative, directly comparable global steam-turbine market-share figure or industry-wide aftermarket-margin benchmark is established here; company-specific disclosures are more reliable.
Are steam-turbine stocks a good investment?
They can suit investors who are comfortable with industrial cyclicality, project execution risk and multi-year investment horizons. The strongest setup is usually a combination of durable power demand, a growing and well-priced backlog, improving conversion, a large installed base and a rising share of service revenue. The weakest setup is a company accepting low-margin equipment work, carrying heavy working-capital needs, suffering warranty or delivery problems and relying on one concentrated end market.

There is no universal answer because “steam-turbine stock” describes a theme rather than a standardized security category. Before buying, determine how much of the company’s earnings actually comes from steam-related equipment and services, then assess valuation against cash generation, balance-sheet capacity and the quality of future work.
A repeatable workflow for analyzing a company
- Start with segment reporting and identify steam-related products and applications.
- Record orders, revenue, operating or EBITDA profit, free cash flow and backlog for the same reporting period.
- Split backlog into equipment and service where the company provides the data.
- Check whether backlog margins are rising, stable or falling and why management says that is happening.
- Review the delivery schedule, customer concentration, cancellation terms and inflation protection.
- Measure cash conversion through inventory, receivables, contract assets and supplier commitments.
- Map the installed base and estimate how much maintenance, parts and upgrade work it can support.
- Stress-test demand assumptions for data centers, industrial projects, plant replacement and policy changes rather than relying on one growth narrative.
- Compare the resulting earnings and cash-flow outlook with the share price, leverage and execution record.
The central conclusion is straightforward: power demand creates the opportunity, orders reveal customer commitment, backlog provides visibility, margins determine economic quality, and aftermarket revenue determines how much of the value can persist after the initial equipment sale. Investors who follow that entire chain will make better comparisons than those who react to a single order announcement or a large backlog headline.
