Nike reported $7.5 billion of inventory at May 31, 2026, unchanged in dollar value from a year earlier. That flat balance did not mean the number of goods stayed the same: more units were offset by shifts in product mix. Nike’s inventory is shaped by the products it buys ahead of customer orders, how demand develops, and changes in unit volume, product mix and costs. Those choices can affect cash flow, availability and margins, but the company’s reported figures do not show that inventory alone caused its broader sales or profit results.
What Nike’s inventory figures show
Inventory is the value of products a company holds for sale. Its dollar value can change for different reasons: Nike may hold more or fewer units, the mix of products may shift, or the cost of those products may change. For that reason, an inventory balance is not a direct count of shoes, apparel or other goods.

The quarterly sequence shows why the dollar balance needs context: at year-end, Nike reported the same value as in the prior year despite holding more units. It also described product costs as a factor in the February balance, while its year-end explanation emphasized unit volume and mix.
What drives Nike’s inventory levels
Buying ahead of customer orders
Nike says it buys some products from manufacturers outside its futures ordering program and before receiving customer orders, so it can meet anticipated demand. That requires forecasts: if actual demand differs from expectations, Nike may end up with too much of some products or too little of others. The company’s FY2023 Form 10-K describes this as a business risk, not as a disclosure of current ordering thresholds or forecast methods.

Units, product mix and costs
The number of units held and their composition affect the reported balance. A change in the mix of products can offset a change in unit volume, as Nike said happened at May 31, 2026. Product costs can also affect the dollar figure: Nike cited higher product costs, primarily associated with North American tariffs, as a partial offset to lower units in its February 2026 inventory balance.
How products sell across channels
Actual sell-through—the rate at which products are sold to customers—may diverge from what Nike anticipated. In June 2026, Nike CFO Matthew Friend said sell-through “remains challenged”; that is management’s characterization, not a separately reported sell-through statistic. For FY2026, Nike reported wholesale revenue up 6% and NIKE Direct revenue down 6%. These channel results provide context for demand and distribution, but Nike did not say they establish a direct cause of the inventory balance.

Nike does not disclose in these releases its model-level forecasts, category stock targets, reorder points, supplier lead-time assumptions or forecast-accuracy figures. Its public inventory explanations identify selected drivers rather than a complete formula for how much stock it plans to hold.
How inventory affects Nike’s business
Excess stock can pressure margins and brand value
If Nike cannot sell products as planned, it may need to write them down or offer discounts. Discounts can reduce the revenue earned per item, while inventory obsolescence reserves reflect the risk that stock will not be sold at its recorded value. Nike’s FY2025 results illustrate the connection: gross margin fell 190 basis points to 42.7%, and the company cited higher discounts, channel mix and inventory obsolescence reserves among the contributors, partly offset by lower product costs. Nike did not attribute the decline to inventory alone. The company’s FY2023 risk disclosure also warns that discounting excess products may harm brand image.

Too little stock can disrupt sales and relationships
Forecasting too low can leave products unavailable when customers or retail partners want them. Nike’s FY2023 Form 10-K says shortages may delay customer shipments and harm relationships with retailers, distributors and consumers, potentially diminishing brand loyalty. This describes a risk, not proof that a shortage caused a particular reported sales result.
Inventory ties up cash and adds uncertainty
Products purchased before orders or before demand is confirmed commit cash to goods that may take time to sell. Nike says inaccurate demand forecasts can adversely affect cash flows and make future results harder to estimate. The same planning problem cuts both ways: surplus stock can require discounts or write-downs, while insufficient stock can mean missed or delayed shipments.

How to read inventory alongside Nike’s results
Inventory is one operating indicator, not a standalone verdict on Nike’s performance. For FY2026, Nike reported revenue of $46.4 billion, flat as reported and down 2% on a currency-neutral basis; wholesale revenue rose 6%, while NIKE Direct declined 6%. Annual gross margin was 42.9%, up 20 basis points. Nike’s FY2026 release did not attribute that annual margin change to inventory, so it should not be read as evidence that inventory movements caused the margin result.

- Compare the inventory balance with the same reporting period a year earlier, and note the balance-sheet date.
- Separate the dollar value from unit movement: costs and product mix can move the balance independently of unit counts.
- Read management’s stated reasons narrowly. A partial offset or cited contributor is not a complete causal explanation.
- Consider channel revenue and margin disclosures as context, not proof that inventory caused those results.
