Gold and silver prices respond to many of the same forces: expected real interest rates, the US dollar, economic outlook, inflation expectations and investor appetite for risk. They can still move in opposite directions—or at very different speeds—because gold has a larger investment and central-bank role, while silver has greater exposure to industrial and technology demand. These influences interact; none reliably predicts the next price move on its own.

What moves gold and silver prices?

Both metals are globally traded and influenced by financial markets as well as physical demand. A change in interest-rate expectations or the dollar can affect both, while shifts in growth expectations, investment flows and supply can affect them differently. The World Gold Council groups gold’s drivers into broad categories rather than a single cause, and its account of 2025 included uncertainty, dollar weakness, rates, investment and central-bank demand, positioning, momentum and growth (World Gold Council, Gold Outlook 2026).

Real interest rates and monetary policy

Gold pays no interest. When investors expect real yields—the return on interest-bearing assets after inflation—to rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold can increase. Lower expected real yields may make gold relatively more attractive. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago identifies real interest rates and inflation expectations among commonly cited considerations in gold pricing (Chicago Fed, November 2021). This is a tendency, not a mechanical rule: other forces can outweigh rate expectations, and silver also responds to industrial demand and investor flows.

The US dollar

Because gold and silver are commonly quoted in US dollars, dollar movements affect their dollar-denominated prices and the purchasing power of buyers using other currencies. A weaker dollar can support prices by making dollar-priced metal less expensive in other currencies, all else equal. The World Gold Council cited dollar weakness alongside marginally lower rates among factors supporting gold in 2025. The dollar is one influence, not a sole price setter.

Inflation, growth and uncertainty

Inflation can matter because it changes expectations for real returns and monetary policy, and because some investors seek assets they believe may preserve purchasing power. But inflation by itself does not explain a price move: expected rates, currency changes, growth prospects and investor positioning also matter. The Chicago Fed’s discussion includes pessimism about future macroeconomic conditions as well as inflation expectations and real rates.

Gold can attract investment demand during financial stress, geopolitical tension or heightened uncertainty. Silver shares some of that appeal, but its industrial exposure can weigh on it if investors expect economic activity to weaken. A shock may therefore support gold while leaving silver more exposed to concerns about growth.

Why gold and silver can diverge

Factor Gold Silver
Demand mix Investment and central-bank demand are important, alongside jewellery and technology uses. Investment and consumer uses matter, but industrial and technology demand make up a larger share of its profile.
Business-cycle sensitivity Investment demand can rise during uncertainty, although gold is not insulated from changes in growth or consumer demand. Industrial demand can benefit from stronger activity and weaken when manufacturing prospects deteriorate.
Supply and available stocks A large above-ground stock can be recycled, resold or reallocated, so mine output is only one part of supply. Mine output, recycling and inventories all matter; the balance between supply and demand can inform expectations but does not dictate price.
Price sensitivity Investment and central-bank flows can move prices, alongside macroeconomic and physical demand. Investor flows can amplify moves in a market with greater industrial exposure; changes in expectations may contribute to pronounced swings.

The World Gold Council describes silver’s industrial exposure this way: “The metal’s dominant industrial share increases its exposure to pro-cyclical risk sentiment – raising the odds of it trading closer to industrial metals and risky assets during periods of market stress and economic deceleration” (World Gold Council, Gold the safe haven versus silver the wildcard).

The difference is not that gold is always defensive or silver always rises in a boom. Shared macro drivers may dominate at one time; industrial optimism or defensive investment demand may matter more at another. The metals can also move in the same direction but by different amounts.

What the 2025 silver deficit does—and does not—tell you

The Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2026 estimated that the silver market had a deficit of 40.3 million ounces (1,252 tonnes) in 2025. The survey reported the deficit despite a 7% increase in supply and a 2% contraction in overall demand (The Silver Institute, April 2026). In the survey’s accounting, a deficit means reported demand exceeded reported supply.

A deficit can contribute to tighter conditions, but it does not guarantee a higher price. Prices also reflect investment flows, inventories, recycling, substitution and what market participants expect in the future. The statistic describes the 2025 balance estimated in the 2026 survey; it is not a forecast of a future price.

How positioning can magnify a move

Prices can shift quickly when investors change their expectations or positions, even when the underlying physical-demand picture has not changed by the same amount. The Bank for International Settlements described a sharp precious-metals reversal in late January and February 2026: silver doubled during 2025, rose by more than 50% in January 2026, then fell by about 30% in one day in late January. The BIS linked the episode to changing dollar and monetary-policy expectations, retail flows into gold and silver funds, and market mechanics (BIS Quarterly Review, March 2026).

That episode illustrates how flows and expectations can amplify volatility; it does not establish that any one factor caused the entire reversal or indicate what prices will do next.

A practical way to compare the metals

When asking why one metal is outperforming the other over a particular period, consider these questions together:

  • What changed in rates or the dollar? These are shared macro influences, but their effect can be offset by other forces.
  • What is the market expecting for growth? Stronger industrial prospects may give silver additional support; deteriorating prospects can expose it to cyclical pressure.
  • Are investors seeking protection or taking on risk? Gold’s investment role may be more prominent during uncertainty, while silver can be more sensitive to risk sentiment.
  • Are flows or positioning amplifying the move? A sharp move can reflect investor activity as well as changes in physical demand or supply expectations.
  • What is the relevant supply context? Consider recycling, available stocks and demand as well as mine production; a reported deficit is context, not a price signal by itself.

Use the time horizon, too: a short-term swing driven by fund flows is not the same question as a longer-term change in industrial demand or reserve strategy. A single rate decision, dollar move, supply deficit or geopolitical event cannot establish the direction of either metal by itself.
