Construction equipment prices depend on the machine’s model, age, configuration, features, attachments, and the terms set by the selling dealer. Delivery estimates depend chiefly on whether that exact machine is available in dealer or distribution-center inventory or must be supplied from a factory, along with demand, production, and transport conditions. Because neither a displayed price nor a broad industry trend establishes your delivered cost or wait, request a dated quote for the exact configuration and destination, with inclusions and delivery terms stated in writing.
What determines the quoted price?
Model, age, configuration, and features
Price is specific to the machine being quoted. Caterpillar says price depends on factors including configuration, age, and features (Caterpillar buying and renting equipment guidance). Model and selected options matter too: attachments and technology can change what is included, so two quotes for machines in the same broad class may not be comparable.
For a used machine, compare its model year, operating hours, condition, maintenance history, and included equipment. A lower purchase price may reflect differences in wear, configuration, or support rather than an equivalent deal.
What the dealer’s price includes
A listed price or displayed dealer price may not equal the delivered transaction total. Caterpillar’s buying-options terms explain that certain displayed prices can exclude items such as taxes, shipping, surcharges, assembly, destination or freight charges, delivery, unbundled attachments, and protection plans. The exact exclusions depend on the pricing display and region; the authorized selling dealer sets the actual sale terms (Caterpillar buying options).

#1 Best Overall
- 1/25 scale, skill 3, paint and cement required
- molded in yellow and silver-gray with chrome accessories
- over 300 super-detail parts
- first time available in original illustrated packaging since its first release in the early 1970s
- optional construction company decals
Ask for an itemized quote and compare the total for the same configuration and delivery location. Have the dealer identify which charges are included, which are additional, and whether dealer preparation, requested attachments, or protection are part of the quoted amount.
Manufacturing costs and market conditions
Manufacturers face changing costs for components, raw materials, labor, transportation, and trade policy, as well as supply-chain disruptions. Caterpillar’s 2026 first-quarter Form 10-Q identifies these types of pressures; Deere’s 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q describes incremental import tariffs affecting product and component costs (Caterpillar SEC filings; Deere earnings and filings). Those disclosures describe company exposure, not a standard surcharge or a formula for any individual machine’s price.

- Revell Model Kit #85-2627, Skill Level 5, Contains 302-Parts, Recommended for ages 13 and up
- Turning front wheels. Opening doors.
- Lift-off roof with full sleeper interior.
- Chains and hoses included. Opening hood with twin turbo diesel engine.

For scale, Caterpillar forecast $2.2–$2.4 billion in tariff costs over 2026 in its 2026 first-quarter filing, based on tariffs implemented since the start of 2025 and expected to remain in place during 2026. It also estimated about $700 million in tariff costs for 2026 Q2, with roughly half in Construction Industries and the rest across other segments. These are dated company forecasts, not final results or charges assigned to a buyer’s machine. Deere reported a $372 million direct impact from incremental import tariffs in the first six months of 2026, net of tariff recovery described in its filing; that figure excludes supplier and market-demand effects. None of these figures is an industry-wide measure or a per-machine price increase.
Manufacturer-reported price realization also is not the same as a change to a particular model’s list price. Company results can reflect volume, market, currency, and commercial conditions; aggregate results should not be used to infer what a local dealer will charge for a specific configuration.

Total ownership cost
The purchase price is only one part of the decision. Caterpillar advises buyers to consider total cost of ownership and upkeep. Include the expected period of use, operating costs, service and parts, uptime, and financing or rental terms when comparing alternatives. CNH Industrial likewise identifies product performance, technology, dealer and service networks, after-sales support, and pricing as competitive factors in construction equipment (CNH Industrial annual reports).
What determines the delivery estimate?
Dealer stock, distribution inventory, or factory supply
The first question is whether the exact configuration is physically available, allocated to a buyer, or still waiting for factory production. Caterpillar states that delivery times vary with product availability from its factories and distribution centers (Caterpillar 2025 Form 10-K). A machine already in local dealer inventory may have a different path to delivery than one that needs production, transport, or preparation.

Dealer inventory is planned rather than uniform across locations. Caterpillar says dealers consider expected demand and delivery times, as well as seasonality, macroeconomic conditions, and rental rates. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Caterpillar reported that machine dealer inventory decreased by about $500 million during 2025 and expected inventory to increase in 2026 to offset that decline. This is Caterpillar’s dealer-inventory context, not a count of all equipment available in the market or evidence that a named model is in stock near you.
Demand, production, and transport
Strong demand, component availability, supply-chain disruptions, and transportation constraints can affect production and availability. Company filings identify these as business conditions, but they do not establish a universal lead-time formula. A delivery estimate is therefore a dealer’s commitment for a particular order and set of assumptions, not a date that can be reliably derived from a manufacturer’s aggregate disclosure.

Configuration and destination
A specialized configuration, optional features, required attachments, delivery location, freight route, and dealer preparation can affect the practical delivery schedule. Ask the dealer to specify the machine and attachments covered by the estimate, the destination, the date the estimate assumes, and what events could change it.

Compare offers on the same basis, not just by the headline price or earliest estimated date. Use this checklist:
- Model and class, configuration, technology, and included attachments.
- For used equipment: model year, operating hours, condition, and maintenance history.
- Delivered total, including freight, delivery, assembly, destination charges, taxes, dealer preparation, attachments, and protection where applicable.
- Stock status: physically in stock, allocated, or awaiting factory production.
- Estimated delivery date, its assumptions, and the dealer’s stated commitment.
- Warranty or protection, service and parts support, and expected uptime needs.
- Purchase, financing, or rental terms and the expected period of use.
Questions to ask the selling dealer
- Is this exact configuration physically in stock, allocated, or waiting for factory production?
- What date does the delivery estimate assume, and what could change it?
- Does the written quote include freight, delivery, assembly, destination charges, taxes, attachments, protection, and dealer preparation?
- What are the separate prices and lead times for each requested attachment or optional feature?
- What service, parts availability, warranty, financing, or rental terms should I include when comparing total ownership cost?
- If the machine is used, what are its model year, hours, maintenance history, condition, and included equipment?
Ask for the quote and delivery commitment to be dated and tied to the exact configuration and destination. Public manufacturer disclosures explain broad cost and supply pressures; they cannot establish your dealer’s current transaction price or delivery date.
