.si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), managed by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES). The registry’s terms define holders as natural or legal persons and do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement in the cited provisions. To register, request an available, eligible name through a domain registrar; the name must also meet the registry’s technical and legal rules.

What does .si mean?

The .si ending identifies Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain. The IANA delegation record for .si identifies ARNES as its manager. IANA lists the domain’s registration date as 1992-04-01 and says the delegation record was last updated on 2026-03-25.

A .si address can signal a connection to Slovenia, but the extension itself does not establish where a website’s owner lives or operates.

Who can register a .si domain?

Register.si’s general terms define a holder as “a natural or legal person who registers a domain name in accordance with these General terms and conditions.” The cited definition and application provisions do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement. That supports saying individuals and organizations are not excluded by a stated residency condition in those provisions—not that every applicant or requested name is guaranteed approval.

Requests normally go through a registrar, the service that handles registration between the applicant and the registry. The terms include specified exceptions to this route. Registrars or the registry may apply current terms, contact-data or identity requirements, and applicable law. See the Register.si general terms and conditions, published and effective 2024-11-15. Register.si’s update notice says that day’s changes were minor and did not otherwise change registration conditions.

What rules must a .si name meet?

Before applying, check the exact name with a registrar and confirm that it is both available and not reserved. Under Register.si’s terms, a name must have 2–63 characters and use permitted characters: the standard Latin alphabet, digits, hyphens, and specified characters for internationalized domain names (IDNs).

  • A name cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  • Two hyphens cannot appear in the third and fourth character positions, except in an allowed ACE string used for an IDN.
  • Reserved names are not generally available for registration. The listed examples include 112.si for Slovenia’s civil-protection and disaster-relief administration, 113.si for police, and si.si and rs.si for the government.

Register.si’s registration and return guidance explains the registration checks and reserved-name rules. Availability alone does not mean a name is legally safe to use.

Can a legally problematic name be rejected?

Yes. Register.si says it may reject or deactivate names that are contrary to law, public policy, or morals. Potential concerns include official names and national symbols, consumer protection, trademarks, and business or association names. A successful availability check is not a trademark clearance or a determination that you have the right to use a name.

The .si general terms incorporate the alternative domain-name dispute-resolution rules (ARDS). Registration therefore does not remove other parties’ rights or prevent a dispute. Review the current terms and applicable rules before choosing a name with legal or commercial significance. Register.si describes relevant restrictions in its guidance on names contrary to law, public order, or morality.

How to get a .si domain

  1. Choose a registrar. The usual route is to submit your request through a domain registrar, rather than directly to the registry.
  2. Check the exact name. Ask the registrar to check whether it is available and unreserved, and whether it meets the .si length, character, and hyphen rules.
  3. Submit the registration request. Provide the information the registrar requires and follow its instructions under the current registry terms.
  4. Review the name’s legal risks. Check for relevant trademarks, official names, and other rights; registry availability does not settle those questions.

What to know about the 16-day return window

Register.si describes a 16-day period after registration during which a holder may be able to return a domain, subject to conditions. The return is not available after activation; the registry’s guidance explains that submitting nameserver records to the activation system is part of activation. This is a conditional return mechanism, not an unconditional refund promise. If you may need to return a new registration, contact your registrar promptly and check the current terms.
