A privacy tool’s profile of you may feel startlingly accurate, but accuracy alone does not show that it accessed hidden account data. The result could reflect information in conversations, saved ChatGPT memories, or context supplied to the tool. Without knowing the tool, its inputs, and how it produced the profile, there is no sound basis for concluding that it uncovered anything beyond that context.
If you’re asking, “What does ChatGPT know about me?” or “How do I see what ChatGPT remembers about me?”, start by checking Memory and Data controls separately. They govern different things, and changing one does not necessarily delete the others.
What can a privacy tool’s profile actually tell you?
A profile can be assembled from information you shared in chats, information ChatGPT saved in Memory, or other material you gave the privacy tool. An accurate result is not, by itself, evidence that the tool accessed private account data without permission. To assess how it was generated, you would need to know what inputs it received, what access you authorized, and how the tool processed them.
It helps to keep three kinds of information distinct:

- Chat content and saved Memory: Information you provide in conversations and details ChatGPT may retain for personalization. Memory has its own controls; deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from it. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ explains the distinction.
- Operational information: OpenAI’s Privacy Policy describes information collected to operate its services, including usage and device-related information. That is not the same thing as a summary of what ChatGPT remembers about a particular person.
- Information used to develop models: OpenAI describes model-development sources broadly, including public information, partner information, and information supplied or generated by users, trainers, and researchers. That does not establish that ChatGPT can retrieve an individual’s exact training examples. OpenAI’s explanation of how data is used to improve model performance provides its account of this process.
Because the privacy tool and its method are not identified here, its access, inputs, and handling of your information cannot be verified. Treat its profile as something to inspect, not proof of unauthorized access.
How to check what ChatGPT may remember
For eligible accounts, ChatGPT’s Memory settings let you review or manage personalization. The precise controls can vary by account and workspace. Consult OpenAI’s current Memory guidance for the options available to your account.

If your goal is to remove a particular detail, check Memory as well as the conversation where you shared it. Deleting the chat alone does not automatically remove a saved memory. Memory and chat history are separate, so take the deletion action appropriate to each.
What Data controls do—and do not—change
OpenAI says Data controls can be used to manage whether conversations help train its models, request an account data export, manage shared links, and reach other available data settings. The options depend on how you sign in, your plan, and your workspace. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ for current settings and availability.

One important distinction: turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, according to OpenAI’s guidance. Those conversations may still remain in your chat history. This setting is not a chat-deletion control, and it does not replace Memory management.
For managed accounts, workspace administrators and retention policies can affect which privacy features are available and how workspace data is handled. OpenAI states in its business privacy information that it does not sell ChatGPT data or share conversations with advertisers or marketing partners. That statement is OpenAI’s claim, and managed-workspace conditions still matter.

How to request a copy of your ChatGPT data
Eligible users can request an export through ChatGPT settings or the OpenAI Privacy Portal. The available route depends on account and workspace status; check OpenAI’s export instructions for the current process.
- In ChatGPT: Open Settings, then Data Controls, and choose the export option if it is available for your account.
- Through the Privacy Portal: Use OpenAI’s Privacy Portal to submit a data request.
- If you use a managed workspace: Settings-based self-service export is not available while logged out or for Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. OpenAI directs managed-workspace users to contact their workspace owner.
An export can contain sensitive account information. Store the downloaded files securely and avoid sharing them casually. An export can help you inspect available account data; it does not establish that a separate privacy tool accessed your account.

What a recent study says about sensitive disclosures
A September 2026 arXiv preprint by its authors reports an audit of 179,057 conversations from 1,057 participants in India, Nigeria, Brazil, and Pakistan. Within that study’s sample, the authors found personal health data in 21.31% of audited conversations and classified 3.62% as posing high-to-extreme privacy risks. These are results from that particular sample, not estimates for all ChatGPT users or conversations. The paper is a preprint, so these findings should not be treated as a universal prevalence measure. Read the September 2026 study on arXiv.
