A video game composer does far more than write a piece of music. From the first creative brief onward, the job combines storytelling, interactive design, production, technical implementation and mixing. The composer develops themes and cue systems, gets approvals, prepares recordings and game-ready assets, connects music to gameplay through middleware or a technical-audio handoff, then balances the result in playable builds.
1. The brief establishes a shared creative and technical direction
Work usually starts with a conversation rather than a melody. The brief can include the game’s narrative, characters, levels, gameplay references, emotional goals, target platform and production schedule. Bobby Krlic described receiving “a brief description of the narrative, and then some renderings of characters, levels and that kind of thing” while developing the music for Returnal. Those materials help a composer understand what the player should feel, how music relates to the world and which moments need musical emphasis.
The audio team also decides how the score will function technically. Early meetings should clarify the game engine, whether middleware such as FMOD or Audiokinetic Wwise will be used, whether the score is linear or nonlinear, how adaptive or procedural behavior should work and who will own implementation. A small team may expect one composer to handle several of these tasks; a larger studio may divide composition, orchestration, recording, technical sound design and mixing among specialists.

- An emotional arc for the game, chapter, level or character.
- A thematic language: motifs, harmonic vocabulary, instrumentation, texture and rhythmic identity.
- Categories of cues, such as exploration, combat, menus, boss encounters, discovery and failure.
- Interactive states and transitions that determine how music responds to play.
- Approval checkpoints for sketches, mockups, recordings, implementation and final mix.
This short creative plan prevents a common mistake: treating the assignment as a request for one finished song when the game actually needs a collection of related musical behaviors.

2. Musical design accounts for interactivity from the beginning
In a film, a cue can be written to a fixed timeline. In a game, the player may reach a battle early, remain in an area for an hour or trigger the same event repeatedly. The composer therefore designs music that can loop, layer, transition and react to player state without sounding broken or exhausting the listener.
Linear scores
A linear score plays in a predetermined order. It suits a cinematic sequence, a menu, a tightly controlled level or any moment where the developer knows exactly when the music starts and ends. The composer can shape a conventional beginning, development and ending, but the cue still needs clean entry and exit points if the player can interrupt it.
Adaptive and procedural scores
An adaptive score is divided into assets that a runtime system can combine. A calm exploration layer might continue while percussion, harmony or additional orchestration enters during danger. Transition segments can move the listener between states, while stingers provide short musical punctuation for events such as discovering an item or defeating an enemy. Procedural systems can vary patterns or arrangements according to game data, but they require especially clear rules for musical coherence.

Winifred Phillips’s game-music guidance emphasizes planning structure, estimating output speed and revising the interactive implementation scheme as production changes. The practical implication is that interactivity is a compositional constraint, not an afterthought added after a stereo track is complete.
3. Mockups let the team approve direction before expensive production
The composer writes themes, motifs, chord progressions, textures and gameplay cues in a digital audio workstation, often using software instruments and samples for a mockup. A mockup is not merely a rough recording. It demonstrates the intended style, orchestration, pacing and interactive behavior well enough for the creative team to make a decision.

What a useful mockup package contains
- Clearly named files that identify the scene, state or cue purpose.
- Tempo and key information when those details matter to later editing or transitions.
- Defined loop points and an explanation of how the loop should behave.
- Alternate versions, intensity layers or transition ideas where the design calls for them.
- Notes describing the gameplay state for which each asset is intended.
The team may review mockups with a creative director, game director, audio lead, level designer or other stakeholders. Feedback can change instrumentation, pacing, emotional intensity, thematic emphasis or the entire interactive plan. Getting that feedback before hiring performers or booking an orchestra avoids paying to produce material that no longer serves the game.
A production outline presented for Dante’s Inferno illustrates this progression: selecting the composer, establishing style, approving score direction, building mockups, recording a London orchestra and completing final mixes and approvals. The order can vary, but approval gates remain important because every later stage increases the cost of changing the music.
4. Approval leads to final production, recording and editing
Once the direction is approved, the composer turns selected sketches into final parts. That may involve orchestration, synthesis, sound design, editing and programming inside the composer’s own studio. When budget and schedule permit, performers or a live orchestra record the score. The composer or a specialist then edits takes, corrects timing, prepares alternate performances and organizes the material into deliverable stems.
Who handles production?
There is no universal division of labor. A composer may perform, orchestrate, record, edit and mix personally. Another project may use separate orchestrators, contractors, recording engineers, music editors and mixers. The contract and production plan should state who supplies notation, session files, stems, alternate versions, naming conventions and revisions.
Live recording does not replace interactive design. Even an orchestral cue may need to be delivered as several layers, a loopable section, a transition or a version with percussion removed. Conversely, an entirely in-the-box score can be final-quality if its arrangement and assets meet the game’s needs.

5. Game-ready assets are more than a stereo export
A finished stereo file is only one possible deliverable. Interactive music commonly uses a set of related assets and metadata that a runtime system can call according to gameplay.

The team also decides technical behavior: when music starts and stops, how transitions avoid clicks, which layers respond to intensity, how exploration differs from combat, how music yields to dialogue and which bus or snapshot controls its level. Clear asset names and state descriptions reduce errors when designers connect the music to gameplay.
6. Does the composer implement the music?
Sometimes. Responsibility depends on the studio, budget, schedule and the composer’s technical experience. The composer may implement directly, provide a structured handoff to a technical sound designer or share the work with an audio programmer.
Composer-owned implementation
Composer-owned implementation keeps musical intent and runtime behavior close together. Darren Korb has explained that his team moved from FMOD Designer to the timeline-based FMOD Studio, which suited his background in music production and recording. He also described middleware as a way to work closely with developers and set up the system himself. This model lets the composer hear and adjust the result in context, but it also requires familiarity with event authoring, parameters, transitions, memory and debugging.
Technical-audio handoff
In a handoff model, the composer supplies organized stems, loops, transitions and implementation notes. A technical sound designer or audio programmer builds events in FMOD or Wwise, connects them to engine states and handles runtime constraints. This can be efficient on a large team, provided the handoff specifies musical timing, intended behavior and acceptable variations.

Shared implementation
Many projects use a hybrid approach: the composer creates the music system and initial events, while a technical specialist integrates it with game code, optimizes memory and resolves build-specific problems. Academic professional-practice work describes implementation as increasingly integrated with composition, while noting that role boundaries still vary widely.
Darren Korb’s practical conclusion is useful: “At the end of the day, if you’ve got music and sound effects and dialogue in your game, and you release the game, and people are playing it, and they enjoy it, it doesn’t matter what you use.” The tool matters less than whether the chosen workflow delivers reliable musical behavior.
7. Middleware connects authored music to gameplay
In a middleware workflow, the audio team imports music assets, creates events and defines the rules that control playback. DigiPen demonstrations show tracks being transported into a game with Audiokinetic Wwise. FMOD and Wwise can both host loops, layers, transitions, parameters, snapshots and routing, although the interface and project structure differ.
- Import the approved assets and verify sample rate, channel format, file names and loop points.
- Create music events for states such as exploration, combat, menu and victory.
- Map game parameters or state changes to intensity layers, transitions and stingers.
- Set entry, exit and quantization rules so changes happen on musical boundaries.
- Route music through buses or snapshots that support ducking under dialogue and important effects.
- Connect events to engine triggers and test them in the actual level, not only in the middleware preview.
Implementation must account for interruption, restart, streaming, memory and repeated exposure. A transition that sounds smooth once may click when triggered rapidly. A layer that works in a short test may consume too much memory when several areas are loaded. These are runtime design problems as much as composition problems.

8. Playable builds reveal problems a digital audio workstation cannot
The score is reviewed in a playable build because timing and balance change when the player controls events. A designer may spend longer than expected in an area, trigger combat repeatedly or hear dialogue over a section that sounded clear in isolation. The build can reveal excessive repetition, late transitions, missing assets, streaming delays, phase or loop clicks, memory pressure and conflicts with sound effects.

Implementation is also subject to production change. Designers may rename events, merge game states or alter when combat begins. Phillips’s guidance notes that the interactive implementation scheme can change during development. When that happens, the composer may need to shorten a loop, create a new intensity variant, replace a transition or export revised stems.
In-game review checklist
- Enter and leave every state repeatedly, including rapid interruptions.
- Check transitions at different musical positions and gameplay speeds.
- Listen for clicks, gaps, phase problems and abrupt tonal changes.
- Test long sessions for repetition and fatigue.
- Verify that dialogue, effects and ambience remain intelligible.
- Confirm behavior on representative hardware and target platforms.
- Log event, parameter and asset failures so fixes can be reproduced.
9. The final mix is a runtime balancing pass
A game mix is not simply the loudest or most polished version of the music. It balances music against dialogue, sound effects, ambience and gameplay priority across many situations. The GDC session The Mix: Understanding Your Tools & How to Use Them characterizes game mixing as a complex, continuous balancing act involving both content and technology.
The final pass may adjust music buses, snapshots, ducking amounts, priorities, limiter behavior, transition timing and loudness. The team checks representative gameplay rather than relying on a single rendered file. A combat mix may need music to support intensity without masking attack sounds; a dialogue scene may require a temporary reduction in music; an exploration state may leave more room for ambience.
Game mix versus soundtrack master
The interactive mix and a soundtrack release are separate deliverables. A game uses runtime rules, stems and state changes, while an album or promotional track is usually mastered as a continuous listening experience. An iZotope case study describes Lena Raine comparing an original Celeste mix with a final mastered version, illustrating why mastering decisions for a released track do not automatically define the in-game balance.
10. A practical end-to-end workflow
- Gather context: review the narrative, characters, levels, gameplay references, platform requirements and schedule.
- Agree on the system: choose linear, adaptive or procedural behavior; identify engine and middleware; assign implementation ownership.
- Write the creative plan: document themes, instrumentation, cue categories, states, transitions and approval gates.
- Build mockups: deliver named cues with loop points, alternates and notes about intended gameplay states.
- Secure approval: record decisions and revisions before committing to expensive sessions or final asset production.
- Produce the score: orchestrate, perform, record, edit and prepare stems or layers.
- Author the runtime system: create events, parameters, transitions, snapshots and routing in the selected middleware.
- Integrate with the game: connect audio events to gameplay states and verify loading, streaming and memory behavior.
- Test in builds: exercise interruptions, repetition, dialogue, effects, state changes and target hardware.
- Balance and deliver: complete the runtime mix, obtain approvals and export any separate soundtrack or promotional masters.
11. How team size changes the composer’s job
On an indie project, one composer may also create sound effects, author middleware events, troubleshoot integration and perform the final mix. That arrangement can be efficient but leaves fewer people available for testing and revision. On a large production, the composer may concentrate on musical direction while orchestrators, recording engineers, music editors, technical sound designers, audio programmers and mix specialists handle adjacent work. Neither model is inherently better; the important issue is that ownership and deliverables are explicit.
The composer’s work is complete only when the music supports the player’s experience in the running game. A beautiful cue that cannot loop, transition, stream or coexist with dialogue is unfinished for an interactive project. The path from brief to final mix is therefore a chain of creative and technical decisions, with playable review determining whether those decisions succeed.
