What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universal winner: the cloud bill depends on the region and full server configuration, while a PC’s cost depends on its measured power use, electricity tariff, and whether you must buy hardware. As one concrete reference, Google Cloud lists a T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour; running that GPU for 730 hours works out to $255.50 for the GPU component alone, before the VM, disk, and networking. An already-owned PC may cost less to run, but compare the same streaming workload and include any genuinely incremental costs.
Compare the full monthly cost, not a GPU rate with a PC power bill
For a fair comparison, use the same number of hours, video, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. A simple 30.4-day month is 730 hours. The cloud option must include all configured services; the PC option must include electricity and any added hardware, internet, backup, or upkeep.
| Cost item | Cloud instance | PC at home |
|---|---|---|
| Compute or hardware | Instance runtime, plus any GPU or other accelerator charge. A GPU price by itself is not the full instance price. | For hardware you already own, its purchase price is sunk for a short-run comparison. If buying or replacing a PC, allocate a fair monthly share of its cost over its useful life. |
| Electricity | Reflected in the provider’s configured service pricing; confirm what the quote includes. | Measured average wall draw × hours ÷ 1,000 × your electricity price per kWh. |
| Storage and network | Check disks or images, networking or data transfer, and any applicable license charges. | Include only genuinely incremental storage or internet costs; check whether your upload plan and data terms suit continuous streaming. |
| Reliability and operations | Consider instance and zone availability, networking to YouTube, monitoring, and any backup arrangement. | Consider household power and ISP interruptions, unattended restarts, monitoring, and backup power if required. |
How much can cloud compute cost?
Google Cloud: the GPU rate is only one line item
Google Cloud’s pricing page lists the T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour. At 730 hours, the arithmetic is 0.35 × 730 = $255.50 for that GPU component. Google says GPU charges are added to the VM cost and that this GPU price excludes the VM instance, disk or image, and networking. The listed USD price is region-specific, and availability and the configured machine affect the total. Use Google’s pricing calculator for the exact instance rather than treating the GPU figure as a quote: Google Cloud GPU pricing.
An instance that remains in the RUNNING state accrues charges even when idle. Google’s resource billing has a one-minute minimum followed by one-second increments, so leaving a server on continuously is not equivalent to paying only while it is actively encoding. See Google Cloud VM pricing and billing.

AWS and other configurations also require an all-in estimate
AWS says On-Demand capacity has no long-term commitment and usage is billed from instance launch until it is stopped or terminated. Per-second billing applies to specified operating systems after the first unit of use. The instance rate is not necessarily the complete bill: AWS directs customers to separate pricing for EBS, public IPv4, and data transfer. Region, instance, and operating system matter. Build the comparison for a specific configuration at AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.
Commitment discounts may change the economics, but count them only if you qualify and can sustain the required commitment. Spot or preemptible capacity can be cheaper, but interruptions may be unsuitable for an unattended continuous stream unless your setup can recover safely.
Calculate the PC’s electricity cost with a real measurement
Use the average power draw measured at the wall while the PC runs the actual encoding workload—not a component’s rated maximum or a guess based on its specifications.
Monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per month × your price per kWh.

For example, a PC averaging 50 W for 730 hours would use 50 ÷ 1,000 × 730 = 36.5 kWh. Multiply 36.5 by the rate on your own electricity bill. The 50 W is an illustrative input, not a measured or typical PC figure; no location-independent electricity price can complete the calculation for you.
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help record consumption if suitable for your setup. Measure a representative period with the stream running, since encoding load and other active components affect the result. For the full PC comparison, add a monthly share of hardware purchase or replacement only if that cost is incremental, along with any additional backup power, internet, storage, maintenance, or labor. Do not count an existing PC’s original purchase price as a new monthly cash expense, but do account for replacement if the stream requires new hardware.
Match the stream settings before comparing machines
The relevant workload is the actual relaxation video and its output settings. A static scene may have a different encoding demand from motion-heavy footage; do not assume a GPU is necessary without testing the intended encoder and content on the target setup.
Use YouTube’s settings as the shared baseline
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends a bitrate of 14 Mbps. Other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs call for different settings. YouTube automatically transcodes a submitted live stream into viewing formats for different devices and networks; that does not remove the need to encode and reliably upload the source stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test the planned video and encoding settings on either option. YouTube recommends that the connection reliably sustain the selected bitrate and advises keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Network disruptions can break a stream. These are operating requirements to consider, not a guarantee that a particular PC, network, or cloud setup will meet a chosen uptime target. See YouTube’s network tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option is cheaper for your channel?
An existing PC may have the lower marginal cost
If you already have a suitable computer and a reliable connection, compare its measured electricity cost plus truly incremental expenses with the cloud’s complete configured bill. YouTube supports computer-based software encoders and says expensive equipment is not required to start; a particular PC still needs to handle your chosen workload. This route can be economical, but the computer, power, and network need to remain available for the stream.
For a 24/7 channel, assess unattended operation as part of cost: power or ISP failures, automatic restart, monitoring, and any battery or backup connection you add. A low electricity bill alone does not measure the cost of keeping a stream available.
A cloud VM trades local operation for a configured recurring bill
A cloud VM moves the encoding computer off-site, but does not make the service cost a single universal rate. Add the configured compute, accelerator if needed, disk, network, and applicable license charges, then consider the stream’s input connection and recovery plan. Cloud hosting changes where the compute runs; it does not by itself establish end-to-end reliability.

Use a worksheet before choosing
- PC electricity: measured average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 730 × your billed price per kWh.
- PC total: electricity + any fair monthly share of newly purchased or replacement hardware + incremental internet, backup power, storage, maintenance, and labor.
- Cloud total: billed instance runtime + GPU or accelerator charges + disks or images + networking or egress + licenses and other configured services.
- Same workload: compare the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, stream duration, and reliability provisions you actually plan to use.
Cloud rates vary with region and configuration; taxes, discounts, and network charges can also affect a real bill. Provider calculators are the right place to price a specified deployment. No PC was measured and no cloud VM was deployed for this comparison, so the examples above are arithmetic and published pricing inputs, not a personalized quote or a performance test.
