There is no fixed number of AI agent sessions that any GPU can run. The practical limit depends on whether the model fits in memory, how much GPU memory remains for active sessions’ KV caches, how long their contexts and outputs are, whether agents make overlapping requests, and what response time you consider acceptable. Treat session capacity as a measured result for a defined model and workload—not as a GPU specification.
Why a GPU has no fixed session count
A GPU’s memory and compute are shared by the model and the work it performs. Model weights must fit first; memory left over is available for runtime needs, including the KV cache used to retain information from active contexts. Compute capacity also affects how quickly requests are processed. A deployment that can keep many sessions active may still respond too slowly for interactive use.
The unit matters, too. An agent session is not necessarily one request: an agent may make sequential model calls, pause while a tool runs, or start other agents whose requests overlap. The number of simultaneously active sessions can therefore differ from the number of users, tasks, or total requests.
What determines capacity
Model size and serving configuration
The model must fit in the GPU memory available to the serving process, along with the runtime’s other requirements. Model size, serving precision, and configuration affect memory use; larger models also require more memory and have higher latency, according to NVIDIA’s 2024 inference-sizing presentation. If a model does not fit on one GPU, the serving setup may need multiple GPUs or nodes.

KV cache and context length
The KV cache stores intermediate information from a model’s input context so it can generate tokens without processing the entire context from scratch again. It consumes GPU memory while requests are active. Longer contexts generally require more cache, leaving room for fewer concurrent requests at a given memory budget.
NVIDIA’s Agentic Inference page gives an approximate example of 16–32 GB of KV cache for a 128K-token context on a 70B model. That is a configuration-dependent illustration, not a universal memory requirement or a promise of a particular session count.

Input, output, and overlap
Capacity depends on the tokens being processed, not just the number of session names in an application. Prompt and context length, generated output length, and how many requests are active at the same time all affect resource use and response time. Tool pauses can reduce overlap if sessions are waiting, while concurrent calls or sub-agents increase it.
NVIDIA illustrates the distinction with an orchestrator that starts 10 concurrent sub-agents: that workload creates 11 simultaneous sessions when the orchestrator is counted. Its page also gives a 5–15x GPU-overhead planning figure for multi-agent deployments versus single-agent equivalents. Treat this as NVIDIA’s planning guidance, not a general multiplier that applies to every agent system.

Latency and throughput targets
Throughput describes how much work the system completes over time; latency describes how long a user waits. Increasing concurrency can raise aggregate throughput, but it does not guarantee acceptable time to first token, time between generated tokens, or end-to-end response time. NVIDIA’s sizing guidance notes that latency limits can significantly reduce available throughput.
For scale, NVIDIA’s 2024 presentation reports a specific H100 SXM, Llama 70B, batch size 8, tensor parallelism 4, FP16 example: 2.6 seconds to process 3,500 input tokens and 2.6 seconds to generate 99 tokens. Those timings describe that listed configuration and should not be used to predict another model’s or GPU’s session capacity.

How to estimate sessions for your workload
- Define the workload. Record the exact model, serving precision, typical and maximum prompt or context lengths, expected output lengths, and whether tool calls or sub-agents can run concurrently. Specify the latency target as well as the desired throughput.
- Check that the model fits. Confirm the serving configuration can load the model on the available GPU resources. If not, determine whether the deployment needs multiple GPUs or nodes before estimating session capacity.
- Inspect the serving engine’s cache capacity. In vLLM, the
GPU KV cache sizeline reports how many tokens can be stored in the GPU KV cache at once. ItsMaximum concurrencyline estimates how many requests can be served concurrently for the specified tokens per request. The example in the vLLM parallelism and scaling documentation is illustrative; use the values reported by your own deployment and the token assumptions that match your workload. - Load-test realistic traffic. Reproduce expected request arrivals, context and output lengths, and agent pauses or overlaps. Measure throughput and latency together; a high session count is not useful if responses miss the interactive target.
- Find the bottleneck before changing the deployment. Track cache use, preemptions, queued requests, GPU memory pressure, throughput, time to first token, and end-to-end latency. These signals help distinguish cache or memory pressure from a throughput or latency limit.
- Adjust one constraint at a time. Depending on the bottleneck, options include reducing context length or concurrency, changing model or serving settings, or adding GPU resources. Re-run the same workload after each change to establish its effect on both capacity and latency.
When one GPU is not enough
vLLM’s guidance is to use a single GPU when the model fits, tensor parallelism across GPUs within one node when it does not, and multiple nodes when one node does not provide enough GPUs. Distributed serving can make a larger model deployable, but it does not itself establish a session count; communication requirements and the workload still need to be measured.
NVIDIA describes Dynamo as a distributed inference-serving framework that can disaggregate prefill and decode, route requests, and extend memory through caching tiers. These are scaling capabilities, not guarantees of a particular performance level or number of sessions. Compare deployment options by model fit, KV-cache headroom, token rates, latency targets, and multi-GPU or multi-node communication needs.

What to report instead of a bare session number
A useful capacity claim describes the conditions under which it was measured. Report the GPU and serving setup, model and precision, context and output assumptions, request arrival pattern, concurrency, and latency target. Include throughput and latency results alongside the number of simultaneously active sessions. Without those details, a session count cannot be reliably compared with another deployment.
