PSA authenticates a Pokémon card before assigning an eligible card a condition grade from 1 to 10. Its graders consider centering, corners, edges, and surface, but PSA does not publish a weighted formula that turns four separate scores into one grade. A PSA 10 is described as “virtually perfect,” with approximately 55/45 centering on the front and 75/25 on the reverse, plus strong overall condition and eye appeal. Those are standards to assess against—not a promise that a card meeting a measurement will receive a 10.
What does PSA evaluate when grading a Pokémon card?
PSA’s process has two distinct questions: is the card authentic, and what condition grade does it merit? Authentication comes before condition grading. A card can be genuine but show wear or defects that lower its grade; conversely, a card with suspected alteration or questionable authenticity may receive no grade rather than an ordinary low number. PSA’s trading-card grading information and support FAQ describe these separate outcomes.
For condition, PSA identifies centering, corners, edges, and surface as the primary categories in its Grader Notes. These are useful inspection categories, not four equally weighted numerical subgrades that collectors can calculate and average. PSA does not provide a public formula for predicting the final number from a list of defects. The card’s overall condition and eye appeal matter, and a borderline case can require judgment.
That means a pre-submission inspection is best used to identify risks and make a submission decision—not to claim certainty about the grade. Inspect the exact card, both front and reverse, and consider how much a lower-than-hoped result would matter to you before sending it in.

How is centering measured for a PSA 10?
PSA’s current published standard allows approximately 55/45 centering on the front and 75/25 on the reverse for a PSA 10. Compare the width of opposite borders, and check both left-to-right and top-to-bottom alignment on each face; front centering alone does not tell the whole story. PSA’s grading standards give the approximate tolerances and reserve room for eye-appeal judgment.
For a left-to-right check, compare the border widths on the card’s left and right sides. For a top-to-bottom check, compare the top and bottom. Repeat both comparisons on the back. A card can look centered in one direction while appearing shifted in the other, and the reverse has its own, more permissive approximate PSA 10 tolerance.
A measuring tool can help you compare borders consistently, but a reading near the stated tolerance is not a guarantee. PSA describes the limits as approximate, and says that a borderline measurement may still call for an eye-appeal decision. Do not treat a tool reading as a grading result or assume that centering alone determines the grade.
Use the current standard rather than relying on older figures that may still appear in articles or discussions. PSA-hosted material from March 27, 1996 described a broader 55/45-to-60/40 front range. The current standards page instead gives approximately 55/45 on the front for a PSA 10. Those figures should not be blended as if they were one rule.
How should I inspect Pokémon card corners?
Look at all four corners on both sides for fraying, whitening, or other wear. Pokémon cards have intentionally rounded corners, so the normal shape is not damage; wear to the rounded edge or corner is still relevant to condition.

Check each corner separately rather than deciding from a quick look at the front. PSA’s guide describes a PSA 8 as potentially showing slight fraying on one or two corners, among other examples. That is a qualitative description, not a rule that one frayed corner automatically means a PSA 8. The final grade reflects the card as a whole.
When inspecting, distinguish the manufacturer’s rounded outline from a flattened, rough, chipped, or whitened area. Check the reverse as well as the front: a corner can appear clean on one face but show wear on the other. A single visible flaw is useful evidence for your submission decision, but it is not enough to calculate a grade on its own.

What edge defects should I look for?
Examine all four edges on both faces for whitening, chipping, or other visible wear. The back’s color can make edge damage easier to notice on some cards, but the exact contrast depends on the card and set.
PSA’s article about the 1999 first-edition Pokémon base set gives a specific example: collectors noted whitening or chipping along edges against the blue backs of cards in that set. That example is useful when inspecting those cards, but it is not evidence that every Pokémon set has the same issue or that every instance receives an identical penalty. The article is set-specific.
Look along the full edge, not just at the corners where edge wear may be most obvious. Record what you can actually see and avoid treating an edge flaw as a separate score. PSA’s published descriptions do not provide a per-defect deduction chart.

How do surface defects affect a Pokémon card’s grade?
Inspect the front, reverse, and holographic area when the card has one. Look for scratches, staining, print defects, focus problems, and other visible damage; the kind of issue and its effect on overall appeal matter more than simply counting marks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On holographic Pokémon cards, scratching is one concrete surface issue to check. PSA’s 1999 first-edition set article discusses holographic scratching in that collecting context. Its example does not establish that every card or set has the same surface risks. On non-holographic areas, check for visible printing imperfections and other surface damage.
PSA’s current PSA 10 description allows for a slight printing imperfection if it does not affect overall appeal. So a visible print line or other print flaw does not automatically disqualify a card from a 10; nor does the allowance mean every print defect is harmless. PSA’s glossary lists print lines among possible printing defects. PSA’s terminology glossary can help clarify those terms.
Also distinguish a manufacturing flaw from later damage. PSA notes that manufacturing centering and print defects can exist when a card leaves its pack. Do not try to improve a card with sprays, whitening agents, pressing, scratch-removal treatments, or other applied substances. PSA lists applied substances and altered stock among possible reasons for a no-grade result; an attempted fix can introduce a more serious issue than the original flaw. PSA’s fresh-pull article also explains why a card pulled directly from a pack is not automatically a Gem Mint 10.
What is the difference between PSA 10, PSA 9, and PSA 8?
The practical distinction is a progression from virtually perfect condition, to nearly perfect with a minor flaw, to a grade that may show more noticeable but still limited issues. PSA’s descriptions are qualitative examples, not a published arithmetic formula for assigning a number.

| Grade | How PSA describes it | What that means when pre-screening |
|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 | “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” The current standard gives approximately 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse centering tolerances, alongside strong corners, focus, original gloss, and no staining. A slight printing imperfection may be acceptable if it does not affect overall appeal. | Assess the entire card, including the reverse and surface, rather than assuming a fresh pull or one strong feature is enough. |
| PSA 9 | Nearly perfect, with a minor flaw. | A small imperfection may matter even when the card otherwise appears exceptionally clean. |
| PSA 8 | May show slight fraying on one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, or slight off-centering. | These are examples of the condition PSA describes, not a promise that any one defect maps directly to an 8. |
PSA’s accessible current grading-standards page provides the PSA 10 centering tolerances, but it does not expose current numerical centering tolerances for PSA 9 and PSA 8. Do not use historical ratios from older material as if they were verified current rules. PSA’s getting-started guide provides the qualitative grade descriptions.
Can a card receive a qualifier or no grade?
Yes. A qualifier or no-grade result is different from an ordinary condition grade, and neither should be confused with a simple low number.
PSA lists optional qualifiers OC, ST, PD, and OF, and required qualifiers MK and MC. An OC qualifier is a centering-related designation; it is not the same thing as a finding that a card is unauthentic. PSA’s FAQ also lists no-grade reasons that include suspected alteration, questionable authenticity, minimum size, and certain miscuts. The outcome depends on the issue PSA identifies, so a collector should not assume every unusual card will be handled in the same way.
PSA Grader Notes may describe centering, corners, edges, or surface for eligible orders, but they are not available for every result. The FAQ excludes PSA 10 and No Grade outcomes and limits eligibility by service and geography. Check the current FAQ for your location and service before expecting notes or using them to interpret a result. See PSA’s current FAQ.

Use a pre-screen to understand condition risks and decide whether grading makes sense for you; it cannot predict the assigned grade or the card’s value. Before submitting, identify the exact card and compare its plausible condition with current grading costs and the possibility of receiving a lower grade than you hope for.

- Identify the card. Note its set and card number so you are evaluating the specific card you intend to send, not a similar version.
- Inspect the whole card. Compare front and reverse centering in both directions, check all four rounded corners and all four edges, and inspect the full surface, including the holo area if present.
- Separate visible facts from predictions. Write down observed issues—such as slight off-centering, a surface scratch, or edge whitening—without converting them into a guessed PSA number.
- Review the possible outcomes. Consider whether you would still want to submit if the card earned a 9 or 8, received a qualifier, or returned without a grade. PSA’s descriptions are not a guarantee of any one outcome.
- Check current costs and availability. Service options, costs, and submission details can change. Review PSA’s live service information and shipping directions at the time you are ready to send the card.
Historical population figures should not be mistaken for a current grade forecast. For example, a PSA article reported 95 PSA 10 examples among 1,071 submitted first-edition Charizard cards, with population figures as of May 2016. That is a dated snapshot for a particular card and submission population—not a current count, a general Pokémon-card rate, or the probability that a fresh pull will earn a 10.
How should I prepare a card for PSA submission?
For a standard card, PSA’s shipping guide calls for a clear penny sleeve first and then a correctly sized semi-rigid holder; it says not to use a toploader for this step. Follow the current instructions rather than improvising with a different holder or packing method. PSA’s shipping guide gives the current preparation directions.
- Place the card in a clear penny sleeve.
- Put the sleeved card into a correctly sized semi-rigid holder. PSA specifies a standard holder size of 3 5/16 × 4 7/8 inches in its guide.
- Follow PSA’s live shipping and order instructions for the rest of the package. Check those directions again when submitting, since requirements or service availability may change.
Do not attempt cosmetic treatment before packing. PSA identifies applied substances and altered stock as possible no-grade concerns, so preserve the card as it is rather than trying to remove scratches, whiten edges, or alter its surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Pokémon card pulled straight from a pack have a good chance of getting a PSA 10?
Pack freshness does not establish the card’s final condition: manufacturing centering and print flaws can already be present when a card leaves a pack. PSA also says a significantly undersized fresh pull may fail to receive a numeric grade, so inspect the individual card rather than using its source as a grade predictor.
Can I get PSA Grader Notes for every Pokémon card I submit?
No. PSA’s FAQ says Grader Notes are not available for PSA 10 or No Grade outcomes and that eligibility is limited by service and geography. Check the current FAQ for the submission route and location that apply to you.
Does PSA publish the percentage of Pokémon cards that receive a 10?
The available data does not establish a current Pokémon-specific PSA 10 probability. Historical population snapshots for an individual card or older PSA grade-distribution figures should not be converted into odds for a different card or a fresh submission.
