Debian’s July 2023 announcement meant that riscv64 had become an official architecture in Debian’s software archive—not that a complete stable Debian release was ready for RISC-V boards. At the time, the archive was nearly empty and offered only the sid and experimental suites. Debian 13 “Trixie,” released on August 9, 2025, later became the first official Debian release for 64-bit RISC-V.

What did Debian make official in July 2023?

On July 23, 2023, Debian developer Aurelien Jarno announced that “riscv64 is now an official Debian architecture.” In this context, official referred to the architecture’s status in Debian’s archive and development process. It did not mean that users could immediately download a finished stable release for any RISC-V computer. Jarno’s announcement said the archive was almost empty and that only sid (Debian unstable) and experimental were available.

To grow the port, the team planned to build a bootstrap set of roughly 90 source packages before importing them into the official archive, alongside further work on build infrastructure. The figure described that planned initial bootstrap set, not the total number of packages available or a measure of overall compatibility.

How did riscv64 progress from an archive port to a Debian release?

Date Milestone
July 23, 2023 Debian announced riscv64 as an official archive architecture; only sid and experimental were available, and the archive was nearly empty. Source
May 18, 2025 Debian’s RISC-V wiki recorded riscv64 as a release architecture for Trixie. Source
August 9, 2025 Debian released Debian 13 “Trixie,” its first official release supporting riscv64. Release announcement
October 4, 2026 Debian’s ports page lists riscv64 as released and added in Debian 13. Ports list

The distinction matters: archive recognition in 2023 was an early project milestone; Trixie made riscv64 part of an official Debian release. Debian’s Trixie riscv64 installation guide identifies it as the first official release for the architecture.

What does Debian’s riscv64 port support?

riscv64 is Debian’s port for 64-bit, little-endian RISC-V systems running Linux. That describes an instruction-set and operating-system target, not a promise that every RISC-V board is supported. Board designs differ in firmware, boot process, storage, and attached devices, so general riscv64 support does not establish compatibility for a particular model or peripheral.

Can you install Debian on a RISC-V board now?

Yes, Debian 13 provides an official riscv64 release, but whether installation works on your board depends on its hardware and the available boot support. Start with Debian’s installation guide and supported hardware information. Check the exact board and revision, firmware or boot requirements, storage, and the peripherals you need against Debian’s current documentation before choosing installation media or troubleshooting a failed boot.

Debian’s installation guide cautions that riscv64 has had less user exposure—and therefore less user testing—than some other architectures, so users may encounter bugs. Official release support is a meaningful step, not a guarantee of identical polish or device coverage across all boards.
