Resistance vanishes when a sufficiently cold, narrow conductor enters a superconducting state. In a conventional superconductor, lattice vibrations help electrons form Cooper pairs. Those pairs then establish one coherent quantum phase and an energy gap separates the collective state from ordinary dissipative excitations. A direct current can therefore flow without a measurable voltage drop.
That answer needs an important qualification for a one-dimensional conductor. Real devices are quasi-one-dimensional nanowires, not perfect mathematical lines. Their small cross-section makes thermal and quantum fluctuations unusually strong. Phase slips can temporarily unwind the superconducting phase and create voltage, so a nanowire can retain finite resistance—or lose superconductivity altogether—even at very low temperature.
What “zero resistance” means
Resistance is inferred from the voltage required to drive a current: for a fixed current, a vanishing voltage corresponds to a resistance below the measurement system’s resolution. In a superconducting wire, the current is carried by a collective condensate rather than by independent electrons that continually lose energy in collisions. Once the condensate is established and dissipative excitations are inaccessible, a DC current can persist without an ordinary voltage drop.
“Zero” is therefore an experimental statement, not a universal numerical property of every one-dimensional conductor. The result depends on temperature, wire dimensions, disorder, magnetic field, applied current, electrical contacts and the sensitivity of the measurement. A meter displaying 0 Ω may simply be reporting that the resistance is smaller than its resolution. A convincing superconductivity claim normally combines transport data with evidence that the result is not caused by contact resistance, wiring, a short circuit or an overly limited measurement range.

In practice, one-dimensional superconductivity means quasi-one-dimensional: a wire whose transverse dimensions are small enough that fluctuations along its length dominate. An ideal mathematical line is not a laboratory material and cannot be tested with ordinary voltage probes.
How a conventional superconductor removes dissipation
Phonons help create Cooper pairs
In the conventional Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) picture, an electron moving through a crystal slightly distorts the lattice. That distortion is quantized as a lattice vibration, or phonon. Under the right conditions, the phonon-mediated interaction provides an effective attraction between electrons near the Fermi surface. Electrons with opposite spin and momentum can become correlated as a Cooper pair.
The pairing interaction does not mean that two electrons become a tiny molecule traveling independently through the wire. A macroscopic number of pairs occupies a collective quantum state. The American Physical Society’s historical account summarizes the energetic balance this way: pairs form at low temperature, while adding enough energy breaks them and returns the material to its normal state.

A superconductor has an excitation gap between the paired ground state and the lowest-energy quasiparticle states. A small disturbance cannot create an unpaired electron or break a pair unless it supplies sufficient energy. Ordinary scattering from phonons, defects or other electrons still exists in the microscopic system, but it cannot automatically convert the current into low-energy single-particle excitations as it does in a normal metal.
The U.S. Department of Energy describes the resulting property as DC conduction without energy loss below a material’s critical temperature, usually written as Tc. The gap is temperature- and material-dependent: as the temperature approaches Tc, thermal excitations become more numerous, the condensate weakens and the zero-resistance state disappears.

Phase coherence makes the pairs a supercurrent
Pairing by itself is not enough. The pairs must share a well-defined collective phase over the portion of wire being measured. That phase determines the supercurrent. When it is coherent, the motion of many pairs is locked together, and a local scattering event cannot simply divert one pair into a dissipative path without disturbing the collective state.
NIST’s description of superconductivity emphasizes this coherent pair motion and the protective energy gap. The combination matters: a material can have local pairing correlations without possessing long-range phase coherence, especially when fluctuations are strong. Such a state need not show truly zero DC resistance.
Why the resistance can appear to drop suddenly
The transition near Tc is collective. Cooling does not gradually make every electron a little less resistive; it allows a macroscopic coherent state to form once temperature, magnetic field and current are within the material’s superconducting limits. As coherence develops, the available dissipative channels collapse over a narrow range of conditions, so a resistance-versus-temperature curve can fall by many orders of magnitude over a small temperature interval.
The exact width and shape of that drop depend on sample uniformity, contact arrangement, measurement current and fluctuations. In a bulk sample, the transition can be extremely sharp. In a nanowire, phase slips and finite-size effects can broaden the transition or leave a long tail of nonzero resistance.
Why one dimension changes the answer
Small cross-section amplifies order-parameter fluctuations
Superconductivity is described by an order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. A thick sample contains enough transverse volume that a local disturbance is usually a small perturbation to the whole condensate. A quasi-1D wire has little transverse volume, so fluctuations of both amplitude and phase have a much larger effect on the state measured along its length.

The Physics Reports review of superconducting nanowires explains that thermal and quantum fluctuations are central in this limit. The wire may possess a superconducting tendency on average while its phase occasionally slips between different configurations. Those events are not a failure of individual electrons to pair; they are temporary failures of global phase winding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a phase slip does
A phase slip changes the superconducting phase by 2π at a localized point in the wire. During the event, the order-parameter amplitude is suppressed enough for the phase to pass through an unstable configuration and reconnect on the other side. Because voltage is tied to the time variation of the superconducting phase, each slip produces a voltage impulse. A steady stream of slips therefore produces a finite average voltage and a measurable resistance.
Phase slips explain how a wire can be made of paired electrons yet still dissipate energy. The relevant question is not simply “Are there Cooper pairs?” but “How often does the collective phase lose its coherence?” Reducing the wire’s cross-section, increasing disorder or applying a stronger current can all make slips more likely.
Thermal and quantum phase slips
Thermal phase slips are activated by temperature. They are most important closer to the superconducting transition, where thermal fluctuations can push the order parameter over the phase-slip barrier. Cooling suppresses this process, but it does not guarantee perfect zero resistance in a sufficiently narrow wire.
Quantum phase slips occur through quantum tunneling rather than thermal activation. They can remain relevant at temperatures where ordinary thermal slips are rare. Their rate depends on material properties, wire geometry, disorder and electromagnetic coupling to the environment. In a long, thick-enough wire they may be negligible; in a nanowire they can dominate the low-temperature resistance.

What the 50 nm and 10 nm estimates mean
The 2008 Physics Reports review identifies wires below approximately 50 nm in diameter as a regime where quantum phase slippage can become important. It also discusses a sharp crossover toward normal behavior near approximately 10 nm for typical material parameters, as quantum phase slips proliferate. These are review-level scale estimates, not universal thresholds. A different superconducting material, cross-sectional shape, disorder level, substrate or electromagnetic environment can shift the relevant dimensions substantially.
Consequently, “one-dimensional” should not be interpreted as a single diameter at which superconductivity switches off. It is a regime in which transverse confinement makes fluctuations important enough that the ideal bulk picture no longer predicts the measured resistance by itself.
Conditions that determine what a real wire measures
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Below Tc, pairing and coherence can develop; thermal phase slips grow as the transition is approached. | Compare the measured temperature with the material’s independently established Tc, and record the full transition curve. |
| Diameter and cross-section | Smaller wires have stronger amplitude and phase fluctuations and a greater quantum-phase-slip rate. | Use the actual measured dimensions, not only the nominal fabrication value. |
| Disorder and normal-state resistance | Disorder changes the pairing environment and can make phase slips more probable. | Report the normal-state resistance, uniformity and any processing steps that alter the wire. |
| Applied current | Current can break pairs, drive the condensate out of its stable state or trigger phase slips. | Sweep current carefully and identify the critical-current range rather than testing at one value. |
| Magnetic field | Field can suppress superconductivity and introduce vortices or other dissipative processes. | Measure resistance as a function of field, including the field orientation when relevant. |
| Contacts and leads | Two-terminal measurements include contact and lead resistance; a parallel path can also mimic zero resistance. | Use a suitable four-terminal layout and verify every connection independently. |
| Instrument resolution | A zero display means only that the signal is below the instrument’s detectable limit. | State the voltage sensitivity, current, bandwidth and the resulting upper bound on resistance. |
How to distinguish superconductivity from an apparent zero
A careful measurement separates the intrinsic wire behavior from the apparatus. The following sequence is a practical minimum for a transport claim.
- Characterize the wiring. Check continuity, insulation and the absence of an unintended metallic short. Measure the leads and contact pads before cooling the sample.
- Use a four-terminal geometry when possible. Drive current through the outer contacts and measure voltage only between inner probes. This removes most series contact and lead resistance from the voltage result, although it does not cure a parallel short.
- Measure a complete temperature sweep. Record resistance above and below the suspected transition, using a current small enough not to heat the wire. Quote the base temperature, sweep direction and thermal stabilization time.
- Repeat at several currents. A genuine superconducting state should show a critical-current behavior: negligible voltage over a low-current range, followed by voltage when the current exceeds the stable limit. A single zero reading cannot reveal that structure.
- Apply a controlled magnetic field. A field-dependent transition supports a superconducting interpretation, while an unchanged zero reading may indicate a wiring artifact. The relevant field scale is material- and geometry-dependent, so do not treat one field value as universal.
- Report an upper bound, not an invented exact zero. If the measured voltage is below the noise floor, state the current and the maximum resistance compatible with the instrument’s resolution.
- Look for a companion thermodynamic signature. CERN identifies magnetic-field expulsion—the Meissner effect—as a defining companion hallmark of superconductivity. In a nanoscale wire, directly observing it can be difficult, but transport alone should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
The historical discovery context is useful for scale: CERN records mercury’s superconducting transition near 4.2 K in the 1911 work that established the phenomenon. That number belongs to mercury under its historical conditions; it is not a universal transition temperature for nanowires or for one-dimensional conductors generally.

Do electrons stop colliding?
No. The microscopic electrons and lattice still interact. What changes is which interactions can produce an irreversible electrical response. In the superconducting state, the current is carried by a coherent condensate with an excitation gap. A weak scattering event cannot easily create the quasiparticles or phase rearrangement needed to produce voltage.

When enough energy is supplied—through temperature, current, magnetic field or another perturbation—the gap can be overcome, pairs can break and ordinary dissipative channels return. In a quasi-1D wire, a phase slip provides another route: the condensate’s phase briefly becomes vulnerable even when most carriers remain paired.
Are Cooper pairs enough?
No. Pair formation and phase coherence are separate requirements. Local pairs can exist without a single phase extending across the measured section of wire. Resistance vanishes only when the paired state is sufficiently coherent and stable that phase slips and quasiparticle production are suppressed on the measurement timescale.
This distinction is especially important in very narrow wires. A nanowire can retain a pairing gap while quantum phase slips produce a nonzero resistance. Conversely, a resistance below the instrument’s resolution does not establish that every part of the wire has the same phase or that the state would remain dissipationless under a larger current or field.

There is no universal point at which every material stops being superconducting. As the cross-section decreases, however, the energetic cost of disturbing the order parameter generally falls relative to fluctuation effects. Quantum phase slips can become frequent enough to produce a measurable resistance and, for typical parameters discussed in the Physics Reports review, can drive a sharp crossover toward normal behavior around the 10 nm scale.
The crossover is not necessarily a simple geometric switch. Surface scattering, granularity, oxidation, substrate coupling, dielectric environment and fabrication damage can all change the effective superconducting parameters. Two wires with the same nominal diameter can therefore show different transition widths or low-temperature resistances.
Scope of the BCS explanation
BCS theory is the standard framework for conventional superconductors in which phonons mediate pairing. Some unconventional superconductors use different pairing mechanisms or have more complicated order parameters. The microscopic origin of pairing then changes, but the transport logic remains: a coherent superconducting state must form, low-energy dissipative excitations must be suppressed, and phase fluctuations must not generate frequent phase slips.
For a quasi-1D device, the safest conclusion is conditional rather than absolute: resistance vanishes when the wire is below its relevant critical conditions and its collective phase remains coherent over the measurement. If fluctuations, current, field or disorder defeat that coherence, finite resistance can return even though pairing correlations survive.
