Phone-camera lens flare is stray light that reaches the image sensor after reflecting or scattering inside the camera. It may look like bright spots, circles, arcs, streaks, halos, or a washed-out veil. When it appears only near a strong light and changes as you reframe, it is often a normal optical effect. If it persists in varied conditions—or the camera glass is damaged or there is moisture inside—inspect the phone and contact its manufacturer.
What lens flare looks like
Flare can reduce contrast across part of an image, creating a whitish veil, or produce visible shapes near a bright source. A related effect, often called ghosting, looks like a displaced, faint copy or pattern of the source. The appearance varies with the light, camera optics, and angle; a spot or arc is not, by itself, proof that a phone is defective.
Why phone cameras produce flare
Camera lenses contain glass surfaces that reflect some incoming light. When light reflects or scatters inside the lens system instead of following the intended image-forming path, some reaches the sensor as stray light. That can veil the image or form a ghost image. Canon’s general explanation of lens coatings and reflections describes this optical mechanism; it is not a quantitative comparison of smartphone cameras. Coatings can reduce surface reflections, but they do not eliminate flare.
Strong sources make stray light more noticeable. The sun is an obvious trigger, but streetlights, headlights, and other point lights at night can also cause it. The source’s position relative to the camera matters: a small change in framing may move or reduce the artifact.

- 【Shoot Like DSLR】This clip-on CPL filter kit from K&F CONCEPT includes a K&F CONCEPT Nano-K series CPL filter and a clip for phone, it is fit for travel shots, street photography, outdoor landscape, and time-lapse photography, Instagram, weddings, vacations, and other fun shooting, etc. For reflection reduction, keep the lens at 30–40° to the surface. For sky enhancement, shoot sideways (90°) to the sun. Adjust as needed. NOTE:Not compatible with iPhone 18 Pro & 18 Pro Max.
- 【K&F CONCEPT 52mm Nano-K Series CPL Filter 】Made by Japanese imported AGC glass, no effect on the image color, and restores the natural color. Adopt 18-layer MRC coating, which reduces reflection, and glare and improves color saturation and contrast. It only reduces glare, making reflections look clearer or darker, but not disappear. To fully remove them, change your angle or physically remove the reflective object.
- 【Enhance Color & Contrast】CPL filter can enhance the color and contrast, and remove non-metallic reflections such as water, and glass to show the true color, especially used in white cloud and blue sky photography. It only reduces reflections from non-metallic surfaces like glass or water. It has little effect on metal or mirrors. Please set realistic expectations.
- 【Widely Compatibility】The clip can be clamped on most smartphones to take pictures like a professional SLR camera. The 52mm CPL filter can also work with the DSLR cameras with ø 52mm lens thread. Please check the product images for compatible phone models.
- 【Quick Install & Easy Operation】Simply screw the filter on the phone clip, then clamp it on your phone, during a photo shoot, easily rotate the filter and adjust shoot angle to get the best polarizing effect. Please check whether it is compatible with your mobile phone.
Phone makers also describe reflections within specific camera assemblies. Xiaomi says strong incident light can reflect multiple times between camera lenses and create visible flare at some angles. Huawei describes bright dots, arcs, halos, or petal-like marks caused by reflections between an internal camera lens and the rear-cover glass; these marks can shift as the phone or light source moves. These are manufacturer explanations of possible artifacts, not a guarantee that every phone will show the same pattern.
When flare is normal—and when to investigate
Sony Support says that whitish flare or circular ghosting when pointing a camera toward a strong light can be a characteristic of the lens rather than a malfunction. Its guidance applies to specific products or operating systems, so it is not a universal warranty ruling. Use the pattern as a practical clue: an artifact that appears around strong lights and changes with angle is more consistent with ordinary optical behavior than one that remains across many kinds of scenes.

- CLEAR UNDERWATER VIEWS: Remove surface glare from lakes & rivers. Reveal fish, rocks, and submerged details that reflections hide. Your underwater shots finally show what's beneath.
- WINDOW & WINDSHIELD SHOTS: Shoot through car windows, storefronts, and museum glass. Glare disappears, so you capture crisp cityscapes and exhibits behind the glass.
- GLARE-FREE PORTRAITS: Reduce oily shine on faces while keeping natural skin texture. No more washed-out selfies—just clean, professional-looking portraits from your phone.
- TATTOO & SKIN DETAILS: Eliminate skin glare that hides ink work. Tattoo artists: capture sharp, vibrant tattoos straight from your phone without editing.
- PREMIUM OPTICAL GLASS: High-transmission glass for sharp, distortion-free images. Includes waterproof carry case with carabiner—clip it on and go.
- Likely an optical effect: it appears mainly with a bright source in or near the frame and moves or fades when you change the angle.
- Check accessories or dirt: the camera glass is smudged, or a case, lens cover, or film overlaps or surrounds the camera.
- Seek manufacturer guidance: the problem persists in varied lighting and framing, the exterior camera glass is scratched or cracked, or you see condensation, internal dirt, or other signs of damage.
For phones with multiple rear cameras, compare them if the camera app lets you select each lens. An artifact isolated to one camera can help narrow down where to look, though it does not establish the cause on its own.
How to diagnose and reduce flare
- Change the framing. Reposition the phone slightly so the bright source is not shining directly into the camera, then take a comparison shot. A change in the artifact with the angle points toward a light-related optical effect.
- Clean the camera glass gently. Wipe it and the surrounding camera area with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Google Pixel Camera Help and Huawei Support recommend gentle cleaning with a suitable soft cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and aggressive cleaning chemicals.
- Remove accessories temporarily. Take off a case, lens cover, or film that overlaps or surrounds the camera, then compare another shot in similar lighting. If the flare improves, check the accessory’s fit and whether an edge near the camera is reflective before putting it back.
- Inspect for damage or moisture. Look for scratches or cracks on the exterior glass and signs such as condensation or dirt beneath it. Do not try to clean inside the camera yourself.
- Escalate persistent symptoms. If the artifact remains across different scenes after reframing, cleaning, and removing accessories—or you see physical damage or moisture—follow the phone maker’s support process. Huawei advises contacting an authorized customer-service center when cleaning does not resolve the listed glare symptom.
Can editing remove flare from a photo?
Editing software may lessen some visible spots or adjust contrast in a captured image, but results are not guaranteed. If flare obscured scene detail or washed out contrast, editing may not recover the information that did not make it into the image. Xiaomi lists editing as a possible after-capture option; for future shots, changing the angle or blocking the strong source from the camera’s view is the more direct approach.
