Earbud case screens can put selected status information and controls on the charging case, so you may not need to reach for your phone for every adjustment. Depending on the model, a screen can handle playback, calls, sound settings, messages, or personalization; some cases add functions such as sending audio from an external source to the earbuds. The feature set is model-specific, not a standard shared by all screen-equipped earbuds.
What a screen can do on the case
The practical purpose is to move some information and controls from a phone app onto the charging case. That can make the case a small control interface rather than only a place to store and charge the earbuds. What appears there—and what you can change—varies by model.
Show status and playback information
A case screen may show what is playing, battery status, or the time. On the JBL Tour Pro 3, JBL says its screen can display the playing song and a dynamic lock screen with battery status, time, and messages. These are advertised capabilities for that model, not a promise that every screen shows the same information.
Control music, calls, and sound
Some screens expose controls that would otherwise be in an app or on a phone. JBL lists playback, call, volume, and EQ controls for the Live Beam 3 Smart Charging Case. For the Tour Pro 3, JBL describes controlling and customizing earbud settings from the case. Check the exact model for the actions you care about: a display alone does not establish that a particular control is available.

View messages and personalize the display
Message viewing is among the functions JBL advertises for both examples, though the descriptions differ. Live Beam 3 lets users customize the screensaver with photos; Tour Pro 3 offers a personal photo as wallpaper, a choice of screen language, and selectable shortcuts. These options are useful only if they match how you want to use the case; they do not imply broader phone notification support than the manufacturer specifies.
Two JBL examples show why model details matter
The JBL product pages list different screen sizes and emphasize different functions. The dimensions below are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of performance or usability.

These feature lists come from JBL’s product information, accessed October 4, 2026. They establish what the company advertises, not how easy or reliable each action feels in daily use.
Can a case screen replace the companion app?
Not necessarily. JBL says Live Beam 3 case controls can be used without opening the JBL Headphones app, but the Tour Pro 3 product page also describes settings and customization through that app. App-free access to some actions should not be read as proof that setup, every setting, or every feature works without an app. Before buying, check which tasks the manufacturer assigns to the case and which still depend on the phone app.

Some cases do more than display information
The Tour Pro 3 illustrates a separate use for the case: JBL says it can act as an audio transmitter, sending sound from an AUX or USB-C source—such as an entertainment system—to the earbuds. JBL also describes an Auracast control. This is a distinct hardware function, not a capability that follows from having a touchscreen; verify compatibility with the case instructions and the particular source device.

Compare the exact earbud model and, where relevant, regional version. A larger screen does not by itself tell you whether the interface exposes the controls you want. Use this checklist when comparing options:

- Information: Does it show the battery, playing song, caller details, messages, or other status you actually want?
- Controls: Can you control playback, calls, volume, EQ, or other settings directly from the case?
- Personalization: Does it support a wallpaper or screensaver, language selection, or shortcuts you would use?
- App dependence: Which functions work from the case, and which require the companion app?
- Extra hardware: Does the case have a function beyond the display, such as external audio transmission?
Touchscreen cases are receiving broader attention, but their value remains a matter of use and preference. TechRadar’s May 27, 2026 feature described the category as a growing trend while expressing skepticism about whether it is the future. That is an editorial assessment, not a measure of market size or proof that the screens are useful for everyone.
