A Raspberry Pi can run a basic desktop, smart-home hub, network-level ad blocker, or server for your own media. It can replace some software and hosting functions, but it cannot replace access to a company’s paid catalog or other hosted service: for example, Netflix requires an active membership to play its content. A self-hosted project also trades subscription convenience for hardware, setup, power, backups, and maintenance.
What a Raspberry Pi can replace
The Pi’s strongest alternatives are services or functions you can run locally using software you control. Whether it is a practical replacement depends on the devices you use, the features you need, and your willingness to maintain it.
A basic desktop computer
Raspberry Pi OS is a free operating system with a desktop environment, web browser, word processor, and spreadsheet application, according to Raspberry Pi OS documentation. That can cover everyday tasks such as web browsing and document editing. It does not establish that a Pi performs like a more powerful computer, so consider the applications and workload you actually need before replacing your main PC.
A smart-home hub
Home Assistant can run on a Raspberry Pi and manage local automations. The Home Assistant project says, “Yes. Home Assistant is free and open source.” Its optional Home Assistant Cloud subscription provides hosted conveniences such as easier remote access and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. See the Home Assistant free-service FAQ and its Raspberry Pi installation guide.

- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant OS for most users and provides images for Pi 4 and Pi 5. Local automations do not require a Home Assistant Cloud subscription, but the specific remote-access or integration features you want may affect whether the optional service is worthwhile.
Network-level ad blocking
Pi-hole acts as a DNS sinkhole: devices on your network use it to filter requests to domains on its blocklists, without needing ad-blocking software installed separately on each device. Raspberry Pi presents this as a way to block ads across a home network; Pi-hole describes its operation in its official documentation.

DNS blocking is not a guarantee that every ad or sponsored placement will disappear. It also does not provide access to the services or content behind an ad-supported or paid subscription.
A personal media-library server
Jellyfin can organize and stream your own movies, shows, music, books, and photos. The Jellyfin project says its server and official clients are free to download and that it does not run servers for users. It can replace the software role of a personal media-library service if you already have media you can lawfully access; it does not supply a commercial streaming catalog. Details are on the Jellyfin website.
Some self-hosted storage and photo functions
A Raspberry Pi can be part of a self-hosted file or photo project, but that does not automatically make it a full replacement for a particular cloud storage or photo plan. Before relying on one, account for storage capacity, backups and recovery, remote access, device compatibility, and ongoing maintenance. The available product information here does not establish feature parity with a specific cloud service.

What still requires a paid service
A Pi can run software; it cannot grant access to a company’s licensed catalog or substitute for every service that company operates. Netflix describes itself as a subscription-based streaming service, and its help center says an active membership is required to play its content on supported mobile, TV, and browser versions. See Netflix’s service description and membership requirement.
Netflix plan availability and prices depend on country. Check the country-specific plans and pricing page for the location where you subscribe; a local media server does not provide Netflix’s catalog.

The same distinction applies beyond streaming: local automation, storage, or playback may be possible without a monthly fee, while a vendor’s hosted remote access, cloud processing, licensed content, or proprietary integrations may remain subject to its terms and charges. Check the service itself rather than assuming every feature requires a subscription—or that self-hosting reproduces all of it.
What you need for a Raspberry Pi project
Requirements depend on the project. For its suggested Raspberry Pi setup, Home Assistant specifies a Pi 4 or Pi 5 with at least 2 GB RAM, a microSD card of at least 32 GB, and a suitable power supply; it recommends Ethernet for reliability and identifies A2 application-class storage as preferable for application workloads. These are Home Assistant’s setup recommendations, not universal requirements for every Pi project. Review its installation guide before buying parts.

Raspberry Pi setup material lists Pi 5 variants with 2, 4, 8, or 16 GB RAM and recommends at least a 32 GB microSD card for setup. See Raspberry Pi’s setup guide and getting-started documentation. Choose storage and accessories for the project you plan to run; a USB SSD may be useful if you need more capacity, but it is not a requirement established for every setup.

Compare the ongoing service you might avoid with the costs and responsibilities the Pi adds. There is no universal break-even point established here: your hardware needs, electricity use, storage, and time will vary.
Quick Recap
- Upfront and ongoing cost: Include the Pi, power supply, storage, replacement parts, and electricity alongside any recurring service fee.
- Setup and maintenance: Self-hosted software needs installation, updates, troubleshooting, and a plan for restoring it if storage or hardware fails.
- Backups and recovery: A server is not itself a backup. Decide how you will protect and restore important files or configuration.
- Remote access and convenience: Check whether local access is enough or whether you depend on a hosted feature such as easy remote access.
- Catalog and compatibility: Confirm that the content, devices, integrations, and client apps you use are supported. Local software cannot replace a licensed catalog.
- Privacy and control: Running a service at home gives you more direct control over the hardware and data path, but also makes you responsible for securing and maintaining it.
