For a YouTube stream encoded in H.264, start at 8 Mbps for 720p30. If you need 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. YouTube does not set a special bitrate for cartoons or for streams that run around the clock; its recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and the codec you send. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular picture quality or uninterrupted streaming.
Choose the bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended incoming live-stream bitrates. Match the row to the resolution and frame rate you actually send, then use the column for your ingest codec. The figures are in Mbps and refer to video; plan for audio separately.
| Incoming resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube also lists minimum H.264 settings: 3 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are published platform settings, not independently measured quality thresholds. For a new H.264 setup, use the recommended value as your starting point rather than treating the minimum as a quality target. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (YouTube Help; accessed October 3, 2026).
Is 720p enough for a cartoon stream?
720p30 at 8 Mbps H.264 is a reasonable starting choice if reducing bandwidth use and maintaining a stable stream matter more than Full HD detail. That is a practical recommendation based on YouTube’s settings table, not a cartoon-specific compression test. If the source is 30 fps, sending it at 60 fps does not create additional source motion detail; choose the frame rate that matches the material and your intended output.

Use 1080p30 at 14 Mbps H.264 when Full HD detail is important and your upload connection can sustain the stream reliably. A 24/7 schedule by itself does not change YouTube’s published bitrate table. No single bitrate guarantees uninterrupted streaming: validate the actual connection and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Settings to pair with the bitrate
- Rate control: Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube lists for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video codec and protocol: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, and supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Choose the bitrate recommendation for the codec you actually send.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps for stereo. Add audio use separately when estimating total upload demand.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into different output formats for viewers. That helps serve viewers at different playback formats, but does not remove the need for a stable upload to YouTube’s ingest service.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Match the encoder to the source: Set the output resolution and frame rate to the choice you intend to maintain, and select the correct codec-specific bitrate from the table.
- Set CBR and keyframes: Configure constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Test representative content: Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Static scenes alone may not reveal how the encoder behaves during more detailed or fast-moving scenes.
- Check upload capacity and stream health: Test the connection against the intended upload bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. YouTube recommends both checks; the published settings do not specify a universal extra bandwidth margin for every operator.
Keep a YouTube stream running around the clock
For a do-it-yourself setup, an encoding computer and streaming software can send the stream; a dedicated hardware video encoder is optional, not required by YouTube’s bitrate guidance. Whichever setup you use, it must keep the encoder and a stable internet connection available for the stream to continue.
Or let it run in the cloud

Copyright and children’s-content checks
Before streaming a cartoon, make sure you have the rights or permission needed to broadcast its video and audio on YouTube. A bitrate setting does not grant those rights. YouTube may detect copyrighted material in a live stream, so use content you are authorized to stream and review the copyright safety checklist. If the video is made for children, select the appropriate audience setting in YouTube Studio; audience designation is separate from encoding settings.
Common bitrate and stream problems
- Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health: Check whether your upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate, test the connection, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. If needed, try a lower resolution and its corresponding recommended bitrate.
- Soft or blocky picture: Confirm that the encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and corresponding recommended bitrate. Sending a higher bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the source video.
- Bitrate recommendation does not match the encoder: Verify whether the ingest codec is H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, then use the matching table column. Do not apply an H.264 figure to an AV1 or H.265 stream by default.
- Audio consumes more bandwidth than expected: Account for audio separately from the video bitrate; YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio.
- The stream stops when the computer or connection goes offline: A local encoder depends on the computer and internet connection staying available. If you need playback from uploaded videos without a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option.
Estimate upload time before sending source video
If you plan to upload the cartoon files before streaming them, use the upload-time calculator to estimate transfer time. Upload time depends on file size and available upstream speed; it is separate from the live ingest bitrate.
