Malaysia-focused survey evidence suggests that performance and price matter when gamers choose a device, and that monitors are important to many respondents. It does not show whether Malaysian PC gamers generally prefer higher frame rates to better graphics. The distinction matters: the strongest local findings are from a 2021 survey of gamers across device types, not a current, representative survey of PC players.

What Malaysian survey evidence says about gaming priorities

A Lenovo Malaysia survey reported by SoyaCincau in July 2021 found that 74.01% of respondents named performance as the main factor influencing a gaming-device purchase. Price also appeared in respondents’ choices: 28.80% selected RM1,000–RM3,000 as their preferred device price band, and 25.52% selected RM3,000–RM5,000. These results describe that survey’s respondents at that time; they are not current estimates for all Malaysian gamers or PC buyers. SoyaCincau’s account of the Lenovo Malaysia survey.

The same survey offers a concrete indication that display equipment is part of the gaming experience: 40.45% said they could not game without a gaming monitor. SoyaCincau’s report discusses refresh rate and response time as monitor features related to the experience, but the survey does not establish a universally preferred specification or prove that respondents chose monitors for one particular visual-performance trade-off.

What those numbers do—and do not—mean

  • Performance was a leading stated purchase priority in this survey, but the report does not define it as frame rate alone.
  • A preference for a gaming monitor does not tell us whether a respondent values image detail, smooth motion, responsiveness, screen size, or another feature most.
  • The survey included different devices. Its results should not be presented as the preferences of Malaysian PC gamers specifically.

Why the frame-rate-versus-graphics question remains open

“Performance” can mean several things in a gaming-device survey: a game running smoothly, short input delays, reliable operation, or hardware that can handle demanding titles. Graphics fidelity is a separate consideration, covering visual detail and effects. Frame rate and image quality can also involve practical trade-offs on a given system, but the local evidence cited here does not ask PC gamers to choose between them.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

So the defensible answer to “Do Malaysian gamers care more about graphics or performance?” is narrower than a simple winner: a 2021 Malaysia-focused survey found performance important in device purchases, while offering no direct, PC-specific comparison between frame rate and visual fidelity. It would be inaccurate to turn that result into a claim that Malaysian PC gamers as a group prefer high frame rates over graphics quality.

Monitors make responsiveness a relevant part of the choice

Refresh rate and response time are useful criteria when comparing gaming monitors because they relate to how often a display updates and how quickly pixels change. The SoyaCincau report specifically connects these features with gaming experience. Its findings support treating monitor responsiveness as a relevant topic for Malaysian gamers; they do not identify one ideal refresh rate or response-time target for every player.

For an individual setup, the useful choice depends on the games played, the capabilities of the PC, the monitor’s actual specifications, and the player’s own priorities. The available Malaysia-focused survey evidence supports asking about responsiveness, not prescribing a single setup or claiming a national preference.

Malaysia’s broader gaming picture is not PC-specific

Deloitte’s Let’s Play! 2022 Malaysia profile, published in 2023 using 2022 study data, found that 93% of Malaysians were aware of video games and 63% were commercially engaged. It reported average monthly gaming-related spending of MYR 116 among video gamers and identified mobile as the most common medium by reach and playing time. Those figures provide context for gaming in Malaysia, not a measure of PC gamers’ graphics settings or hardware priorities. Deloitte’s Malaysia country profile.

The mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory offers excellent value and proven stability.

Device mix also matters when interpreting the 2021 Lenovo survey. Its respondents reported mainly gaming on desktop (36.85%), laptop (28.92%), and a mobile device (21.89%). Those are the reported shares of that survey’s respondents, not current population estimates. The range of devices reinforces why a general survey result cannot automatically be treated as a PC-gamer finding.

Different players may value different things

Samsung Newsroom Malaysia’s 2023 account of the ONE Esports Southeast Asia and Oceania Gaming Insights Survey 2022 says 56% of surveyed gamers played at least a few times a week and describes distinct gamer types in Malaysia. This is regional survey context, not a PC-only study or a direct test of visual-quality preferences. It supports a basic caution: gaming frequency and player segments vary, so one survey-wide priority should not be treated as every player’s preference. How to read hardware evidence without overgeneralizing

Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports monthly global data about participating Steam users’ hardware. It can describe the platform’s reported hardware mix, but it cannot by itself establish what Malaysian PC gamers prefer: it is global rather than Malaysia-specific, and hardware adoption is not the same as a stated preference for frame rate or graphics quality. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey.

Malaysia’s esports ecosystem is another distinct subject. The Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia’s April 2025 overview discusses the sector, including connectivity challenges, but does not directly measure Malaysian PC gamers’ visual preferences. It is not evidence for choosing graphics fidelity over frame rate. ISIS Malaysia’s esports overview.

What a PC gamer can take from the evidence

  • Performance and price are worth considering: both featured in the 2021 Lenovo Malaysia survey findings, though those results are historical and not PC-only.
  • Include the monitor in the decision: refresh rate and response time are relevant comparison points, but the local survey does not establish a universal ideal.
  • Make the choice for your own games and system: the cited local evidence does not determine whether graphics fidelity or frame rate should win for a particular player.
  • Keep the population in view: Malaysian gaming includes substantial mobile play, and broad gamer surveys should not be relabelled as PC-gamer surveys.
