Themes are used to coordinate how software looks and, in some contexts, to identify repeatable business scenarios. In an app, a theme can coordinate color, typography and shape; it may apply across a device or only inside one app. In a browser, it changes browser appearance. In website development, reusable block patterns—not themes themselves—help build repeated layouts. Business catalogs use “theme” differently, grouping goals and workflows by industry.

What does “theme” mean in software?

For an interface, a theme is a coordinated set of visual attributes rather than a single background color. Android identifies color, typography and shape as theme attributes. The term can also refer to browser appearance or to broader site styling, so it is useful to identify what the theme controls and where it applies.

What are interface themes used for?

  • Support light and dark preferences: An app can respond to a user’s or system’s appearance preference instead of forcing one palette.
  • Personalize an interface: Android guidance includes dynamic color based on user-generated choices, as well as colors derived from content.
  • Express a brand: A custom color scheme and coordinated visual attributes can give an app or site a consistent identity.
  • Keep screens legible: Theme choices affect text and surfaces, so contrast and type settings need to remain usable across the interface.

Android recommends considering system preferences and type settings, checking contrast between text and surfaces, and keeping a clear visual hierarchy. Its guidance also cautions against layering too many competing themes across the same interface; a primary theme source should guide most of the UI. Android Developers’ themes guidance discusses these considerations.

System themes and app themes: what is the difference?

Scope is the key distinction. Android separates system themes, which can affect the device UI, from app themes, which apply within the app that implements them. A device-wide appearance setting and an app’s own visual system are therefore not interchangeable: an app theme does not automatically define the appearance of every other app or the whole device.

How do themes differ across platforms?

Use What it changes or organizes Important distinction
Android interface theme App or device experience, including attributes such as color, typography and shape May be system-level or app-level; consider user preferences, type settings and contrast. Android Developers
Chrome browser theme The browser’s appearance Chrome describes themes as a special kind of extension, distinct from an app’s in-page design. The cited implementation guide was last updated September 18, 2012, so its technical details should not be treated as current platform requirements. Chrome for Developers
WordPress block pattern A reusable group of blocks for page layouts or templates A pattern is not itself a theme. Reusing a pattern can avoid recreating a repeated section in multiple layouts. The handbook chapter was first published April 30, 2024. WordPress Theme Handbook

How do business catalogs use “themes”?

In a business use-case catalog, “theme” can label a recurring goal or area of activity rather than a visual design. Adobe’s catalog describes industry scenarios, their expected impact and links to repeatable implementation patterns, connecting an industry use case to a pattern and a business objective. Its examples include recovering abandoned retail carts, recommending products, reminding automotive customers about service appointments and sending transaction-based financial alerts. These are business workflows, not interface themes. The catalog was last updated September 28, 2026. Adobe Experience League’s Use Case Catalog

What should you consider when choosing a theme approach?

  • Scope: Decide whether the change should affect the device, one app, browser chrome or page layouts.
  • Styling source: Determine whether appearance follows system or user preferences, derives from content, or uses a brand-defined scheme.
  • Attributes: Check whether the need is about color, typography and shape, browser appearance, or reusable content layout; these are different capabilities.
  • Legibility: Verify text-to-surface contrast and account for type preferences instead of treating visual consistency as the only goal.
  • Reuse: For WordPress layouts, consider patterns when the same block group recurs, so it can be maintained as a pattern rather than duplicated across templates.
