The strongest evidence-backed alternatives to a concentrated AI-stock position are U.S. value and small-cap value equities, developed- and emerging-market stocks, dividend-paying companies, high-quality bonds, and selected real-economy sectors such as energy, materials, healthcare, utilities, and infrastructure. Each addresses a different risk: valuation, geographic concentration, income, volatility, or dependence on technology earnings.
No substitute is guaranteed to beat AI stocks. A durable portfolio combines assets with different cash-flow drivers, correlations, liquidity, and fee levels instead of replacing one concentrated bet with another.
Why look beyond AI stocks?
AI-related companies have produced powerful gains, but the theme is concentrated in a small number of large U.S. technology and semiconductor businesses. Concentration creates two separate risks: a disappointing outlook for the technology itself and a disappointing valuation for companies already priced for exceptional growth. A company can remain profitable while its shares fall if earnings grow more slowly than investors expected.

BlackRock/iShares reported that 44 of 46 AI stocks experienced drawdowns of at least 20% during 2025. That figure does not prove that AI is a poor long-term investment; it shows that owning many companies described as “AI” does not automatically remove volatility.

Alternatives work when their returns are driven by something different: cheaper starting valuations, dividends, domestic or foreign economic cycles, contractual cash flows, interest income, or the prices of physical resources. The objective is not to predict the next winning theme. It is to reduce the chance that one earnings narrative determines the result of an entire portfolio.
The best alternatives at a glance
| Allocation type | What drives returns | Evidence and role | Main risks | Income and liquidity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. value equities | Re-rating of inexpensive stocks, earnings, dividends | Vanguard’s 2025/2026 outlook projects roughly 7% annualized returns over 10 years for U.S. value stocks; a core equity diversifier | Can lag growth stocks for years; financially stressed companies may be cheap for a reason | Many companies pay dividends; broad funds are generally liquid; fees depend on fund |
| Small-cap value | Recovery in smaller companies’ earnings and valuations | Morningstar strategist Susan Dziubinski described persistent underperformance versus large-cap growth as a potential source of value (AP, February 18, 2026) | Higher economic sensitivity, financing costs, volatility and business-failure risk | Income varies; diversified ETFs and mutual funds usually offer daily liquidity |
| Developed-market ex-U.S. equities | Foreign earnings, dividends, currency and valuation changes | Vanguard projects about 6% annualized 10-year returns for equities outside the U.S.; lowers home-market concentration | Currency, political, governance and sector-composition risk | Dividend yields can be higher than in the U.S.; fund liquidity and fees vary |
| Emerging-market equities | Economic and productivity growth in developing economies | Useful geographic diversifier within a global allocation; no single return estimate was stated in the cited outlook | Currency controls, political instability, weaker disclosure and sharp drawdowns | Often liquid through broad funds, but spreads and fees can be higher |
| Dividend-paying equities | Corporate cash distributions plus share-price growth | Can provide a visible income stream and tilt toward profitable, mature businesses | Dividends can be cut; high-yield screens may over-weight troubled sectors | Income is recurring but not guaranteed; broad funds are usually liquid |
| Treasuries and investment-grade bonds | Coupon income and changes in interest rates | BlackRock said bonds resumed their diversifying role in 2025 when stocks pulled back; Vanguard says balanced bond exposure can improve resilience if AI disappoints | Prices fall when yields rise; long maturities have greater duration risk; inflation reduces real returns | Scheduled interest; government and broad bond funds are generally liquid |
| Energy and materials | Commodity prices, production, infrastructure demand and dividends | iShares identified these sectors as potentially underappreciated; metals and mining free-cash-flow yields exceeded 7% in its 2026 analysis | Commodity cycles, environmental regulation, capital intensity and geopolitical shocks | Income varies; listed funds are liquid, while individual producers can be volatile |
| Healthcare | Demographics, medical utilization, innovation and recurring demand | iShares estimated health-equipment free-cash-flow yield near 5% and a 16% discount to the broad market in 2026 | Regulation, reimbursement changes, product liability and clinical-trial failures | Many established companies pay dividends; sector funds are generally liquid |
| Utilities and infrastructure | Regulated or contracted cash flows, electricity and network investment | Can capture data-center power, grid and transport spending without owning AI builders directly | Interest-rate sensitivity, regulation, debt and construction overruns | Utilities often pay dividends; listed vehicles are liquid, private vehicles may not be |
| Gold, commodities and crypto | Price changes, scarcity and investor demand | Satellite diversifiers only; Vanguard notes they generally lack income or cash flow | No earnings anchor, high volatility, storage or custody issues, and possible stress correlation | Liquid exchange-traded exposure exists, but fees and spreads vary; crypto liquidity can disappear |
1. U.S. value and small-cap value equities
Why value is the clearest equity alternative
Value stocks are priced more modestly relative to measures such as earnings, book value or cash flow than high-growth stocks. Their returns do not require every forecast about artificial intelligence to come true. Banks, insurers, industrial companies, consumer businesses, telecommunications firms and other mature industries can contribute through current profits and dividends rather than distant growth promises.
Vanguard’s 2025/2026 outlook puts the expected 10-year return for U.S. value stocks at roughly 7% a year. This is a capital-market projection, not a promised result, and it depends on valuation, earnings and economic conditions at the time of publication. The estimate is useful because it reflects a lower starting valuation and a different earnings mix from the most expensive growth shares.
Why add smaller companies?
Small-cap value stocks combine a valuation tilt with exposure to companies that are not dominated by the largest technology firms. Smaller businesses can benefit disproportionately when credit conditions improve, domestic demand strengthens or an industry consolidates. They also have fewer resources, less diversified revenue and greater refinancing needs.
Morningstar strategist Susan Dziubinski told the Associated Press on February 18, 2026, that small-cap value had “persistently underperformed” large-cap growth and that the gap could represent value. Underperformance is not a timing signal: a cheap segment can become cheaper. Use a diversified fund, check its exposure to unprofitable companies, and expect larger drawdowns than in large-cap value.

How to evaluate a value fund
- Compare price-to-earnings, price-to-book and free-cash-flow measures with the broad market, while checking whether the discount comes from genuine business stress.
- Inspect sector weights. A value fund can be heavily concentrated in financials, energy or industrials rather than broadly diversified.
- Review profitability, debt, earnings revisions and dividend coverage; a high yield funded by borrowing is not durable income.
- Check the expense ratio, bid-ask spread, assets, tracking difference and tax treatment before buying.
2. Developed-market and emerging-market equities
The geographic concentration problem
U.S. companies represent about 25% of global gross domestic product but 63% of global stock-market value, according to Morningstar figures cited by the Associated Press on February 18, 2026. That gap means a portfolio built only from U.S. shares makes a much larger bet on one market than the size of the U.S. economy would suggest.
Spreading exposure across countries adds different currencies, monetary policies, industries and valuation regimes. Morningstar Indexes strategist Dan Lefkovitz described geographic diversification as prudent risk management. It does not eliminate losses: foreign markets can fall together during a global recession, and currency movements can either amplify or offset local-market returns.

Vanguard’s 2025/2026 outlook projects approximately 6% annualized returns over 10 years for equities outside the U.S. The estimate covers a broad opportunity set rather than a guarantee for every country or fund. Developed-market companies often have larger dividend contributions, more exposure to banks, industrials, healthcare and consumer staples, and lower valuations than the most expensive U.S. growth shares.
Before choosing a developed-markets ETF, determine whether it includes Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and Europe, and whether it hedges currency. Hedging can reduce exchange-rate volatility but adds cost and removes some potential benefit when the foreign currency rises. An unhedged fund gives the U.S.-based investor both local equity exposure and currency exposure.
Emerging markets
Emerging-market funds add countries with faster population, income and infrastructure growth, but the path is less predictable. Examine country limits, state-owned-company exposure, currency controls, accounting standards, trading hours and fund settlement. Keep the position sized for political and currency shocks rather than assuming a higher growth rate will translate directly into higher shareholder returns.

3. Dividend-paying stocks for cash flow
Dividend strategies shift part of the return from an uncertain future share price to current distributions. Companies that have maintained or increased dividends over long periods often have durable cash generation, but a dividend is a corporate decision, not a bond coupon. Boards can reduce it when profits, regulation or balance sheets deteriorate.
Distinguish a quality-dividend strategy from a high-yield strategy. Quality screens typically require profitability, manageable debt and a sustainable payout. High-yield screens can concentrate in slow-growth sectors or companies whose share prices fell because investors expect a dividend cut. Reinvesting distributions compounds returns; taking them as cash creates an income stream but reduces the amount left invested.
For a dividend ETF, check the index methodology, maximum weight per company, sector caps, withholding-tax treatment on foreign dividends and distribution schedule. Compare total return, not yield alone. A fund with a 5% yield and a 10% price decline is not automatically better than one yielding 2% with stronger earnings growth.
4. High-quality bonds: income and ballast
What bonds add
Treasuries, investment-grade corporate bonds and diversified bond funds provide contractual interest and a source of liquidity when equity markets are stressed. BlackRock reported that bonds resumed their diversifying role in 2025 as stocks pulled back. Vanguard likewise says a balanced bond allocation can strengthen resilience if AI earnings or valuations disappoint.
Bonds are not risk-free outside of a security’s maturity and payment terms. A bond fund does not mature as a whole, and its net asset value moves every day. When market yields rise, existing bonds with lower coupons become less valuable. Longer-duration funds move more for a given rate change; shorter-duration funds sacrifice some yield in exchange for lower interest-rate sensitivity.

Choosing the bond exposure
- Treasuries: highest direct U.S. government credit quality, with duration and inflation risk still present.
- Investment-grade corporate bonds: additional yield in exchange for company default and spread risk.
- Short-term bond funds: lower duration and easier reinvestment when rates change, but less protection from a sudden growth slowdown.
- Intermediate and long-term bonds: greater sensitivity to rates, but potentially stronger gains when yields fall during a recession.
- Inflation-protected bonds: principal and interest adjust according to an inflation index, yet real yields and market prices fluctuate.
Read a fund’s effective duration, average credit quality, maturity distribution, yield-to-maturity, fees and concentration in financial issuers. Do not compare a Treasury fund’s yield with a corporate fund’s yield without accounting for the extra credit risk.
5. Energy, materials, healthcare, utilities and infrastructure
Energy and materials
Energy producers, pipeline operators, miners, chemicals companies and equipment suppliers participate in physical-economy investment. Their revenue is linked to oil, gas, electricity, metals or construction demand rather than software adoption. That can diversify an AI-heavy portfolio, but it also introduces commodity cycles. A company may report strong free cash flow at one copper or oil price and struggle at another.
iShares’ 2026 analysis found metals and mining free-cash-flow yields above 7%. The figure is a sector-level observation from that analysis, not a guaranteed distribution or return. Check reserve quality, all-in sustaining costs, debt maturities, project locations, environmental liabilities and management’s capital-allocation record.
Healthcare
Healthcare combines non-discretionary demand with innovation in equipment, services, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. iShares estimated a free-cash-flow yield of about 5% for health equipment and a 16% discount to the broad market in 2026. Equipment companies can have recurring consumables revenue, but hospitals, insurers and governments exert pricing pressure. Biotechnology adds clinical-trial and approval risk that is not comparable with diversified medical-device exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUtilities and infrastructure
Electric grids, transmission, water systems, transportation networks and regulated utilities can benefit from long-term capital spending, including the power required by data centers. Their cash flows may be more visible than those of early-stage technology companies, yet they are capital-intensive and often financed with debt. Higher interest rates can reduce the value of their dividends and raise project costs. Publicly traded infrastructure funds offer liquidity; private infrastructure vehicles can impose multi-year lockups and higher fees.

6. Satellite diversifiers: gold, commodities and crypto
Gold and broad commodities can respond differently from stocks and bonds during inflation, currency stress or geopolitical shocks. Crypto assets can provide exposure to a separate digital-asset market. None should be treated as guaranteed portfolio insurance.
Vanguard states that gold, silver, physical commodities and cryptocurrencies generally lack income or operating cash flow and are better evaluated outside a core portfolio. Their prices depend largely on what another investor will pay later. Gold also has storage or fund-fee considerations; commodity funds may incur futures-roll costs; crypto adds custody, platform, regulatory and extreme-volatility risks.
Size a satellite by the loss you can tolerate, not by a return target. Review liquidity, custody, tax reporting, counterparty exposure, fees and the possibility that correlations rise during a crisis. A diversifier that cannot be sold when needed may fail its intended purpose.

- Measure the existing concentration. Look through mutual funds and ETFs to identify the largest companies, technology-sector weight, top-10 concentration and overlapping holdings. A portfolio can own several funds yet still be dominated by the same mega-cap stocks.
- Separate goals. Assign equity funds to long-term growth, bonds to income and stability, and satellites to a specific diversification purpose. Do not use a volatile commodity or crypto position for money needed soon.
- Choose the core first. A combination of broad U.S. value, developed-market ex-U.S. and, where appropriate, emerging-market or small-cap value funds addresses valuation and geographic concentration without relying on a single sector.
- Add ballast according to time horizon. Select Treasury or investment-grade bond duration based on when the money is needed and how much price movement you can tolerate. Match the bond allocation to the risk of the whole portfolio, not just the yield on one fund.
- Use sector tilts deliberately. Energy, materials, healthcare, utilities and infrastructure should have a stated reason for inclusion and a maximum weight. Avoid replacing an AI concentration with an equally narrow bet on one commodity or regulation outcome.
- Check implementation costs. Compare expense ratios, spreads, trading commissions, taxes, currency-hedging costs and any redemption or lockup terms. “Low fee” is not enough if the fund is illiquid or tracks an unsuitable index.
- Rebalance by rule. Set a calendar or tolerance band, then sell portions that have grown beyond the intended risk and add to those that have fallen, subject to taxes and account rules. Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a forecast of the next winner.
What can go wrong with each alternative?
| Choice | Failure mode | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Value stocks | Years of underperformance while growth remains dominant | Use a diversified basket and verify balance-sheet quality instead of timing a single sector |
| International stocks | Currency losses, political shocks or weak governance | Review country weights, currency policy, standards and tax treatment |
| Small-cap value | Recession, refinancing stress and larger drawdowns | Check profitability, liquidity and fund concentration |
| Bonds | Rising yields, inflation or corporate defaults | Match duration and credit quality to the objective; do not treat every bond fund as cash |
| Energy and materials | Commodity-price collapse or costly projects | Examine production costs, debt, reserves and capital spending |
| Healthcare | Reimbursement, regulation or clinical failure | Favor diversified exposure when you cannot analyze individual pipelines |
| Utilities and infrastructure | Rate increases, regulatory delays and construction overruns | Review leverage, contract terms, permitted returns and project schedules |
| Gold, commodities and crypto | No cash flow, severe volatility or poor liquidity in a crisis | Keep satellite-sized, disclose custody and fee assumptions, and define an exit rule |
Are these alternatives safer than AI stocks?
Not automatically. Value and small-cap shares can fall more than large technology stocks in a recession. International funds can lose money when the dollar rises even if local markets gain. Bonds can decline in a period of rising yields. Energy and mining companies are cyclical, healthcare companies face regulatory and trial risk, and private or alternative funds can be expensive and difficult to sell.
Diversification improves the odds that one disappointing area will not determine the portfolio’s outcome; it does not remove market risk. Vanguard also warns that alternatives can fail as diversifiers during periods of stress and are not essential to disciplined long-term investing. A simple mix of diversified equities and high-quality bonds may be more robust than a collection of fashionable satellites.
Questions to answer before buying
- What percentage of the portfolio is already exposed to the same large technology companies through different funds?
- Is the objective growth, current income, inflation protection, lower volatility or a combination?
- How long can the money remain invested, and what loss would force a sale?
- Does the proposed fund earn returns from operating cash flow, interest, dividends, commodity prices or speculation?
- What are the duration, credit, currency, country, sector and liquidity risks?
- Are fees, taxes and trading spreads reasonable for the expected diversification benefit?
- What rule will trigger rebalancing, and what evidence would show that the original reason for owning the asset has changed?
Bottom line for a long-term investor
For most investors trying to reduce dependence on AI stocks, start with broad U.S. value and international equity exposure, then add small-cap value or dividend quality if the extra volatility is acceptable. Use Treasuries or investment-grade bonds for income and ballast, and consider energy, materials, healthcare, utilities or infrastructure as measured sector tilts rather than replacements for a diversified core. Gold, commodities and crypto belong only in a risk-sized satellite allocation because they generally do not produce cash flow.
The most defensible choice is the one whose valuation, cash flows, geography and risk profile complement what you already own. Vanguard economist Roger Aliaga-Díaz summarized the long-term distinction this way: if AI transforms the economy successfully, the greatest benefit may accrue to companies using the technology rather than only to its builders. That possibility argues for broad ownership of value, international and real-economy businesses—not for abandoning equities or assuming any single alternative must outperform.
