For a conventional living-room replacement, buy the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. Choose a Steam Deck OLED if portability and a PC game library matter more, Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives and local multiplayer, or a gaming PC if you can raise the budget well above $600. If your real priority is Xbox games, existing purchases or Game Pass, a Series S or certified-refurbished Xbox may be a better value than changing platforms.
Best alternatives at a glance
A $600 budget can buy several very different kinds of gaming hardware. The right choice depends less on a headline specification than on where your games are, whether you need a disc drive, how much setup you will tolerate and whether the machine must also serve as a computer.

Why the $600 Xbox comparison changed in 2026
Microsoft announced on June 25, 2026 that worldwide Xbox console price updates would take effect August 1, 2026. The announcement said 512GB models would increase by US$100, 1TB models by US$150 and the 2TB model would be discontinued. Microsoft attributed the changes to storage and memory prices rising by more than 2.5 times and described previously played and certified-refurbished consoles as lower-price routes.

That context matters because a $600 budget may now buy a lower-tier new Xbox, a refurbished higher-tier model or a different platform entirely. Microsoft still calls Series S the lowest-cost way for console players to access the biggest releases, but the best substitute depends on whether you want to preserve Xbox access or start over elsewhere.
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: the closest conventional-console substitute
What you get
Sony describes the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition as an all-digital console with an 825GB internal drive. It downloads games from the PlayStation Store rather than reading discs. Sony’s disc-equipped PS5 has a 1TB drive and plays PS5 and PS4 discs; the digital model can accept an optional disc drive, giving you a way to add physical-game support later if the compatible drive and pricing suit you.
The platform supports PS4 backward compatibility, PlayStation exclusives and PlayStation Plus libraries containing PS5 and PS4 games. Sony says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. That makes the digital PS5 a strong fit for someone replacing a living-room Xbox and willing to move to a new account ecosystem.

- It is a fixed console designed for a TV, with little configuration compared with a PC.
- It offers a large current-generation library plus access to a substantial PS4 catalog.
- Its optional disc-drive path lets a digital buyer preserve some flexibility instead of committing permanently to downloads.
- It suits buyers who value first-party PlayStation games more than Xbox account continuity.
Important trade-offs
Your Xbox purchases, achievements, subscriptions and Xbox-specific accessories do not transfer automatically to PlayStation. Multiplayer rules, cloud saves and subscription catalogs also follow each platform’s terms. A digital-only purchase means relying on PlayStation Store availability and storage management unless you add the disc drive.
Sony’s product page does not state a current US MSRP and directs shoppers to retailers, so compare the live console price, any optional drive, an extra controller and the cost of the games you intend to play. Do not assume a $600 ceiling covers every accessory or a large digital library.

Steam Deck OLED: best for portable PC gaming
Where it fits
The Steam Deck OLED is a handheld PC intended to play a Steam library at home, on a couch or away from a TV. TechRadar characterizes even the highest-end OLED model as cheaper than most gaming laptops. Its attraction is not a direct match for a living-room console; it is the ability to carry a substantial PC library, use Steam sales and install many community-made modifications without buying a separate computer.
The compatibility caveat
The device uses Linux-based software, so not every Steam title works perfectly. Some recent games perform poorly, and compatibility can change after a game or operating-system update. Before buying, open each important title’s Steam page and check its Steam Deck Verified or Playable status. Read the notes rather than relying only on the badge when a game depends on an anti-cheat system, a launcher or unusual controls.
When to choose it
- You want a built-in screen and controls rather than a second TV console.
- Your existing or planned games are on Steam and you are comfortable checking compatibility.
- You value mods, sales and PC features more than guaranteed console-style behavior.
- You can accept occasional settings changes, controller remapping or troubleshooting.
Buying used
A used older Steam Deck can reduce the entry cost, but condition, battery health, screen wear, storage and remaining warranty vary by unit. Test charging, suspend and resume, both control sticks, buttons, speakers, Wi-Fi and the display before accepting a used device. A lower purchase price is not a bargain if a worn battery or damaged control requires immediate repair.
Nintendo Switch 2: choose the library, not raw Xbox-style performance
Switch 2 is the relevant alternative when Nintendo’s first-party games, handheld play and local multiplayer are the priority. It can operate docked or handheld, making it useful for a household that shares one screen or travels frequently. Its value is defined by Nintendo’s exclusive library and controller options rather than by matching the performance target of a current high-end home console.
Switch 2 is a separate ecosystem from Xbox. Existing Xbox digital purchases do not become Nintendo purchases, and the two platforms have different online services, save systems and multiplayer rules. Compare the games your household actually plans to play, the number of controllers required for local multiplayer and the storage included with the specific package.

A stable official price passage was not available for this comparison. Check Nintendo’s current listing and major retailers immediately before purchase, and account for any required game, storage or controller purchases. Choose Switch 2 when exclusive software and flexibility matter more than a like-for-like Xbox replacement.
Gaming PC: the flexibility option, but not usually a $600 build
What the budget really buys
A PC can cover gaming, work, content creation, mods, multiple storefronts and future upgrades. However, a system that approaches current-console performance generally costs substantially more than $600 once every component is included.

Additional costs people miss
- A case and power supply must be matched to the graphics card and cooling requirements.
- Windows may be an extra cost if you do not already have a license or choose another operating system.
- A monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headset can consume a large part of a supposedly fixed budget.
- Assembly, firmware updates, driver installation and game-specific troubleshooting take time.
When a PC is worth the premium
Choose a PC if you need one machine for gaming and non-gaming work, want to upgrade individual parts instead of replacing the entire system, or rely on mods and software unavailable on consoles. Compare the total system cost and the performance of the complete machine, not just the graphics card or processor. A $600 graphics card does not create a $600 gaming PC.
Stay in the Xbox ecosystem for less
Series S for digital Xbox access
If your main goal is Xbox games, Game Pass or existing account purchases, staying with Xbox may produce the least friction. Series S is the lower-cost current Xbox route and is download-only, so it suits buyers who do not need discs and who have reliable broadband. It preserves your Xbox account, accessories and platform-specific entitlements instead of requiring a second library.
Certified-refurbished Series X models
The observed US Microsoft Store listings put certified-refurbished Series X at $649.99 and the certified-refurbished Series X 1TB Digital Edition at $599.99. Those prices make the digital refurbished model especially relevant to a $600 ceiling, but inventory can disappear and terms vary. Inspect the seller, included accessories, return window and warranty at checkout. Do not treat one store observation as a guaranteed future price.

A refurbished console is sensible when performance and Xbox continuity matter more than having factory-sealed packaging. It is less attractive if you require a disc drive, want a long guaranteed supply of a particular model or are buying outside the US market where pricing and availability differ.
Cloud gaming and remote play: lower hardware cost with more dependencies
Streaming can reduce the amount of hardware you buy, but it does not remove the need for a supported service, compatible games and a stable internet connection. Image quality and input response depend on bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi congestion and the provider’s regional availability. A subscription can also change its catalog or supported features.
PlayStation Portal is not a standalone console replacement. TechRadar describes its core role as streaming from a PS5, while Sony has added cloud streaming for supported titles to PlayStation Plus Premium members. That means Portal-style use still depends on the relevant account, service terms and game support; it is not a way to obtain a complete console library without a host system or qualifying cloud plan.
Remote play is most useful when you already own the console and want another screen. Cloud gaming is more useful when you accept a service catalog and want to defer a large hardware purchase. Neither is the safest choice for a household with unreliable broadband or strict offline-play requirements.

How to decide before spending
- List the games you will actually play. Mark each as an Xbox purchase, a PlayStation title, a Nintendo exclusive, a Steam game or a multi-platform release. This prevents a cheaper device from becoming expensive after you rebuild your library.
- Decide whether discs matter. If you own discs or buy used games, exclude digital-only models unless an optional drive is available and affordable.
- Choose your main screen. A TV favors PS5, Switch 2 or Xbox. A handheld favors Steam Deck OLED or Switch 2. A desk-and-monitor setup makes a PC more practical.
- Set the performance expectation. A conventional console offers predictable settings. A PC offers a wider range of settings and upgrades but requires more configuration. Switch 2 should be judged by its software rather than by Xbox-style performance comparisons.
- Calculate the complete first purchase. Include controllers, storage, games, subscriptions, display equipment and any optional drive. For a PC, include the case, power supply, operating system and peripherals.
- Price the ecosystem over time. Compare the cost of the games you already own, online multiplayer requirements, subscription catalogs and likely storage expansion. A lower device price can be erased by repurchasing a large library.
- Check regional and date-sensitive details. Console prices, refurbished inventory, subscription catalogs and cloud features change. Recheck the retailer and program terms on the day you order.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by hardware price alone
A $600 device is not automatically the least expensive route. Rebuying games, adding controllers or paying for a required subscription can make a platform switch cost more than a refurbished console that preserves your library.

Assuming every PC game works on a handheld
Steam Deck OLED compatibility is title-specific. Verify the games that matter most and read user reports for launcher, anti-cheat and control issues before relying on the device as your only gaming system.
Confusing remote play with ownership
Remote play moves a game from a host console to another screen; it does not create a new console library. Cloud streaming likewise depends on service availability and supported titles.
Ignoring storage behavior
Digital consoles and handheld PCs can fill quickly with large installs. Check the included capacity, expansion method and the price of suitable storage before deciding that a lower-priced model is sufficient.
Overlooking refurbished terms
Certified-refurbished does not mean every seller offers identical coverage. Confirm the condition grade, warranty, return window, included cables and controller before payment.
Which option should you buy?
Buy the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition when you want the most straightforward non-Xbox living-room console and are comfortable moving to PlayStation’s ecosystem. Buy Steam Deck OLED when handheld access and a Steam library are more important than guaranteed compatibility. Buy Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives and shared local play. Buy a gaming PC only when you can fund the complete system above the $600 level and will use its flexibility. If your priority is Xbox access rather than novelty, compare Series S and certified-refurbished Xbox listings first.
