Short answer: The S&P 500 product currently identified on Hyperliquid is not a conventional SPX option. It is a Trade[XYZ] HIP-3 perpetual derivative that follows an S&P 500 reference feed. You choose a leveraged long or short position, post USDC margin, pay or receive periodic funding, and keep the position open without a strike price or expiration date.
What is actually available on Hyperliquid?
As of the October 18, 2026 status reporting, the S&P 500-related market on Hyperliquid is a HIP-3 perpetual deployed through Trade[XYZ]. Calling it an “S&P 500 option” can lead to the wrong expectations about strikes, premiums, exercise and expiry. The contract is a margined derivative for directional exposure, not a listed call or put on the SPX index.
S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on March 18, 2026 that it licensed the S&P 500 to Trade[XYZ] for a perpetual derivative on Hyperliquid. The announcement described access to institutional-quality S&P DJI index data. Its companion release said that perpetual derivatives let eligible investors take leveraged long or short positions without a fixed expiry, with XYZ markets available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It does not mean that listed Cboe SPX contracts have been reproduced on Hyperliquid.

How the S&P 500 perpetual works
1. You post USDC margin
The dated SP500 market guide describes the contract as cash-settled with USDC margin. Your margin is collateral for the position rather than the purchase of an option premium. The amount required depends on the market’s current margin and leverage rules, which can change for a HIP-3 market.
2. You select long or short exposure
A long position benefits when the contract’s mark price rises relative to the S&P 500 oracle or reference feed. A short position benefits when that mark price falls. This is linear directional exposure: the result is tied to the size of the price move and your position size, rather than to an option payoff with a strike.
3. The contract remains open while margin supports it
There is no expiration date to force a rollover or exercise decision. You can close the position yourself, or it can be reduced or liquidated if losses use too much of the available margin under the market’s rules. Keeping a position open does not make it free: funding payments continue at the published interval.

4. Funding is exchanged between longs and shorts
The May 2026 market snapshot described hourly funding. Funding is a transfer between opposing sides of the perpetual and is separate from maker or taker trading fees. Depending on the funding rate and your side of the market, you may pay funding or receive it. The rate, direction and calculation must be checked in the live market interface before entering a trade.
5. Profit and loss is settled in cash
The contract does not deliver shares or an index basket. Changes in the mark price produce gains or losses that are settled in the account’s USDC balance according to the market’s rules. Leverage increases the notional exposure represented by each dollar of margin, so the same percentage move has a larger effect on account equity.
Parameters that are time-sensitive
HIP-3 is a framework for builder-deployed perpetual markets, not a single centrally fixed contract specification. The Hyperliquid technical reference says a deployer defines the oracle and contract specifications, operates the market, manages liquidity and uses a third-party frontend. It also describes a 500,000 HYPE minimum stake for deployment and a builder-market fee schedule. Those are framework-level details; they do not replace the live specification for this particular S&P 500 market.

| Item | What the dated material says | What to verify before trading |
|---|---|---|
| Instrument type | HIP-3 perpetual associated with Trade[XYZ] | Live symbol and contract page |
| Underlying reference | S&P 500 reference/oracle feed using licensed S&P DJI data | Oracle source, update behavior and mark-price rules |
| Settlement | Cash-settled in USDC | Settlement asset and account treatment |
| Expiry | None | Any market-specific suspension or termination provisions |
| Funding interval | Hourly in the May 2026 snapshot | Current interval, rate formula and payment direction |
| Maximum leverage | 50x reported in the May 2026 SP500 market guide | Current cap, maintenance margin and position limits |
| Trading hours | Designed for 24/7 trading; the S&P DJI release said 365 days a year | Current uptime, maintenance windows and geographic access |
| Fees | Dated maker/taker figures were published in the May 2026 snapshot | Live maker, taker, funding and liquidation charges |
The 50x figure is a historical snapshot, not a promise that the market still offers that setting. HIP-3 deployers can alter parameters, and a frontend can display a market that has different limits from another interface. Treat every number in the table as a prompt to inspect the current contract details.
Why “options” is a misleading description
A conventional option gives its buyer or seller a defined payoff around a strike price. A call generally gains value as the underlying rises above its strike; a put generally gains value as it falls below its strike. The contract has an expiration, and the buyer pays a premium while the seller receives one. Time decay and implied volatility are central to the option’s price.
The Hyperliquid HIP-3 perpetual has none of those option-specific fields. There is no call or put designation, no strike, no option premium and no expiration. Instead, it uses collateral, leverage, mark-to-market profit and loss, and recurring funding. Describing the product as an “option” is therefore shorthand for “a derivative giving exposure to the S&P 500,” not a statement that it is an SPX option.

Perpetual versus listed SPX options
| Feature | Hyperliquid S&P 500 HIP-3 perpetual | Listed SPX option on Cboe |
|---|---|---|
| Basic position | Leveraged long or short linear exposure | Call or put with a defined option payoff |
| Strike price | None | Yes |
| Expiration | None; the position can continue while margin supports it | Yes; the selected expiration governs the contract |
| Upfront economics | USDC margin plus trading costs and continuing funding | Premium paid or received, plus brokerage and exchange costs |
| Settlement | Cash-settled in USDC under the market rules | Cboe describes SPX as cash-settled |
| Exercise style | No exercise process | Cboe describes SPX as European exercise |
| Ongoing carry | Periodic funding between longs and shorts | No perpetual funding transfer; option value reflects premium, time and volatility |
| Trading schedule | Market is designed for continuous 24/7 access | Exchange hours and holiday schedule apply |
| Liquidation | Margin can be liquidated under the HIP-3 market rules | Risk depends on whether the option is bought or sold, account margin and broker rules |
| Contract size | Set by the HIP-3 market specification | Cboe distinguishes SPX, XSP and Nano products by contract size |
These are different instruments even though both reference the S&P 500. An SPX option can expire worthless while a perpetual has no expiry; a perpetual position can be liquidated during an adverse move while a fully paid long option’s maximum loss is normally the premium; and funding on the perpetual has no direct equivalent in a listed option.
What leverage, funding and liquidation mean in practice
Leverage magnifies the position
Suppose, purely as an illustration, that a trader posts 1,000 USDC and selects 5x exposure. The position’s notional value would be 5,000 USDC before fees and funding. A 2% favorable move on that notional would correspond to about 100 USDC before costs; a 2% adverse move would have the same magnitude in the opposite direction. The example is arithmetic, not a promise about the market’s minimum margin or available leverage.
At higher leverage, a smaller adverse price move can consume the margin supporting the position. The reported 50x maximum in the May 2026 snapshot should be treated as an upper setting, not a prudent target.

Funding changes the break-even point
Because funding is periodic, a position held for hours or days can accumulate a meaningful carrying cost or credit even if the reference price barely changes. Check the current rate before opening, then monitor the next funding timestamps. Funding is not the same as the exchange’s maker or taker fee and should be tracked separately in your trade records.
Liquidation is market-specific
An adverse move can reduce account equity until the market’s liquidation process intervenes. The available material does not establish the exact liquidation formula, insurance-fund treatment, partial-close sequence or oracle-failure behavior. Do not infer those rules from another perpetual market. Read the live HIP-3 specification and understand the maintenance-margin trigger before using leverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to investigate the market before placing an order
- Confirm the instrument label. Make sure the screen identifies a HIP-3 perpetual and not a similarly named index, token or synthetic market. Record the exact symbol.
- Read the contract specification. Check the quote and settlement asset, tick size, minimum order, position limits, leverage cap, initial margin and maintenance margin.
- Inspect the oracle information. Identify the S&P 500 reference feed, update frequency, mark-price method and stated response to stale or disrupted data.
- Check funding. Note the current rate, whether longs or shorts pay, the interval and the next payment time.
- Check all fees. Confirm maker, taker, closing, liquidation and any builder or venue charges in the live interface.
- Verify eligibility. Confirm that your jurisdiction, account type and identity status are allowed for this market. “24/7” describes availability, not universal legal access.
- Use a risk limit. Size the position so an adverse move and several funding payments do not threaten funds needed elsewhere. Avoid treating the maximum leverage as a recommended setting.
- Place and monitor the order. Review whether it is a market or limit order, the estimated execution price, margin mode and liquidation estimate before confirming.
- Close deliberately. When exiting, verify that the position is fully reduced and account for the final funding payment and trading fee.
Risks specific to a builder-deployed HIP-3 market
- Oracle risk: The deployer defines the oracle and contract specifications. A reference feed can differ from the price shown by a stock exchange or ETF, especially when underlying equity markets are closed.
- Liquidity and execution risk: The deployer manages liquidity. Thin order books can increase slippage, widen spreads or make a large position difficult to close.
- Frontend and venue risk: HIP-3 uses a third-party frontend. Verify that the interface is displaying the intended market and the current specification rather than relying on a search result or an old guide.
- Continuous-market risk: Trading outside U.S. equity hours can produce price moves and liquidations when the cash index is not publishing a new official level. The contract’s oracle and mark-price rules determine what happens then.
- Parameter-change risk: Leverage, funding, fees, margin and trading status can change. A May 2026 guide cannot guarantee the settings visible in October 2026.
- Counterparty and platform risk: USDC settlement depends on the venue, smart-contract and account systems functioning as intended. This is separate from the market direction risk.
Does Hyperliquid offer SPX options?
Nothing in the identified product description establishes that conventional Cboe-listed SPX calls and puts are available on Hyperliquid. If you need a strike, a fixed expiration, European exercise or an option premium, you are looking for the listed SPX product described by Cboe, not the HIP-3 perpetual.

What to verify on the day you trade
- The exact live symbol and deployer name.
- The current oracle and mark-price documentation.
- Whether the market is open to your country and account.
- Current leverage and margin tiers, not the historical 50x figure.
- Funding rate, interval and next settlement time.
- Maker, taker, liquidation and withdrawal-related costs.
- Order-book depth and expected slippage for your size.
- How the venue handles oracle outages, maintenance and forced reduction.
The key distinction is simple but consequential: the Hyperliquid product is a continuously traded, margined S&P 500 perpetual. A listed SPX option is a strike-based, expiry-dated contract with a premium and European exercise. Confirm which payoff you are actually opening before committing collateral.
