FMV cutscenes are prerecorded video files that a game decodes and plays. The footage can be live action, 2D animation, or prerecorded CGI. A scripted 3D scene is generated by the game engine at runtime from models, animation, cameras, lighting, audio, and event logic.
The practical distinction is simple: FMV plays back a recording; scripted 3D renders a designed sequence. “Cutscene” describes a narrative or cinematic function, while “FMV” describes the delivery method. A cutscene can therefore be FMV, engine-rendered, or a scripted sequence that leaves gameplay running.
What FMV means in a game
FMV stands for full-motion video. In game-development usage, it means prerecorded content stored as a video asset rather than imagery rendered frame by frame by the game engine during playback. The game decodes the file and presents its frames, usually at a trigger such as a checkpoint, level transition, story event, or menu selection.
FMV World defines FMV as prerecorded game content that may be live action or animation and “does not use an in-game engine to render the animation in real time.” That definition covers a filmed actor, a 2D animated sequence, and an offline-rendered CGI movie. Visual style does not determine whether something is FMV; the source of the images does.

Three ways games use FMV
- FMV cutscenes: A video plays to deliver story, character moments, exposition, or a transition. It may be skippable, although skipping can remove context even when the game remains completable.
- Interactive movies: The player makes choices, and those choices select among subsequent prerecorded clips. The branching logic is in the game, but each displayed branch is still a video file.
- FMV games: Viewing and responding to video is the primary gameplay activity rather than a short cinematic between conventional levels.
These categories describe the role and interactivity of the video, not whether it is live action. A filmed briefing and an offline-rendered fantasy battle are both FMV if they are delivered as prerecorded video.
What a scripted 3D scene is
A scripted 3D scene uses the game’s rendering engine while the sequence runs. The engine draws the current models, materials, effects, camera view, lighting, and animation, then mixes in audio and event logic. Developers can author the sequence tightly enough for it to feel like a movie, but the images are still produced at runtime.
In Unity, for example, the Timeline package is intended for cutscenes and cinematic sequences when developers do not want externally prerecorded video. The sequence can use the same characters, environments, animation controllers, and lighting systems as gameplay. A character’s current outfit, damage state, inventory item, or other world state can appear automatically if the scene is built to read that state.
Scripted does not necessarily mean interactive
“Scripted” means that events follow authored instructions; it does not guarantee that the player can change the outcome. Crytek’s CryAnimation documentation distinguishes linear animation, in which the animator controls keyframes, camera, lighting, and outcome in advance, from interactive animation, in which player input or artificial intelligence makes decisions at runtime and the system adapts motion.
A predefined path can look responsive while remaining completely linear. The player may walk around during a staged event, but the actors may continue their fixed performances and ignore the player until the scene ends. As Crytek puts it, “The key difference is the decision making process,” and “Interactive animation is by definition responsive.” A scripted sequence can therefore be real-time without being meaningfully interactive.

FMV versus scripted 3D: the essential differences
| Comparison | FMV cutscene | Scripted 3D scene |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering source | A decoded prerecorded video file | The game engine renders assets at runtime |
| Camera, edit, and performance | Fixed when the video is produced | Authored in advance but rendered through the current game state and runtime systems |
| Response to player or world state | Needs alternate clips, branching videos, or overlays to vary | Can read triggers, player state, customization, artificial intelligence, and input |
| Continuity with gameplay | Can change abruptly in resolution, framing, or character appearance | Can use the same assets and systems as the surrounding game |
| Production strengths | Predictable final image; supports filmed actors and offline-rendered spectacle | Seamless continuity and the ability to reflect the current world state |
| Production constraints | Requires storage and video decoding; fixed framing can limit variation | Requires robust animation, collision, artificial intelligence, camera behavior, and runtime performance |
| Accessibility work | Needs descriptions, transcripts, captions, and other support for cinematic media | Needs the same support whenever visual information is essential |
How much can each format react to the player?
FMV uses alternate media to create variation
A video file has already captured its camera moves, acting, timing, lighting, and effects. To change the result, a game must select another clip, branch to a different video, layer graphics or subtitles over the footage, or interrupt playback with gameplay. A branching interactive movie may offer many possible clips, but each branch still has to be recorded or rendered and stored.
This fixed nature is useful when the creator needs an exact performance or edit. A dramatic reveal can be timed to the frame, and every player sees the same composition for that clip. The trade-off is that a prerecorded character cannot automatically wear the player’s newly equipped armor or respond to an unexpected position without specially prepared alternatives.

A runtime scene can query the game as it starts or as events occur. It may place the player’s customized character in the shot, use the current weather, preserve a damaged environment, or select an animation based on a trigger. The engine can also let the player retain limited movement or allow artificial intelligence to make decisions.
That flexibility does not make every engine scene open-ended. Many are linear timelines with a few conditional branches. Runtime rendering means the scene can access current data; whether the designers actually use that data is a separate design choice.
Why FMV can look better—or simply different—from gameplay
Older games often made the distinction obvious. Gameplay could use low-resolution models or a fixed camera, while an FMV sequence showed filmed actors or offline-rendered imagery with more detailed lighting, effects, and animation. Because the cinematic was produced independently of the game engine, its color, aspect ratio, character proportions, and image quality could differ sharply from the playable sections.

Modern games often render cinematics with the same engine used for play. That can make a scripted 3D scene match the game closely, while improvements in asset quality and lighting can make it look more polished than ordinary gameplay. Developers may also blend a scripted event into active play instead of switching to a separate video. Consequently, visual quality alone is not a reliable test: a highly polished clip may be FMV, and a scene that looks exactly like gameplay may still be a carefully choreographed runtime sequence.
What “pre-rendered” means in this context
People often use “pre-rendered” as a synonym for FMV, but the timing matters. An offline render is generated before the game ships, encoded into a video, and then decoded during play; that is FMV delivery. A scripted 3D scene may also be fully planned in advance, yet its individual frames are rendered as the scene runs. It is pre-authored, not prerecorded.
This distinction explains why a runtime scene can reflect a player’s current state while an FMV clip normally cannot. It also explains why a runtime scene must meet the console or PC’s frame-time and memory limits, whereas an FMV clip must be stored and decoded reliably.
How to tell which kind of cinematic you are watching
No single visual clue is conclusive, but several observations provide useful evidence:
- Player customization persists exactly: If a protagonist appears with the outfit, weapon, or physical changes selected moments earlier, the scene is likely engine-rendered, although a game could provide matching video variants.
- The camera is locked to a film edit: A fixed aspect ratio, abrupt compression change, or a cut that ignores the game camera often indicates FMV, particularly in older titles.
- You can move while the scene plays: This suggests a runtime scripted event, but it may still be linear. Movement alone does not prove that characters or outcomes respond.
- Unexpected world changes appear: A scene that reflects a destroyed object, altered weather, or a companion’s current status is probably reading runtime state.
- Branching choices lead to different filmed performances: That is an interactive-movie structure using multiple FMV clips, not necessarily a real-time scene.
Games can combine techniques. A runtime camera may hand off to a short video, a video may include interactive overlays, or a scripted scene may use a prerecorded explosion or background plate. The decisive question is where the displayed frames come from at that moment.

Production trade-offs for developers
When FMV is advantageous
- Exact control: Filmmakers can lock the edit, acting, camera, lighting, and effects before release.
- Performance beyond the runtime budget: Offline rendering or live-action production can deliver imagery that would be difficult to generate interactively on the target hardware.
- Real performers and locations: Filmed actors, sets, or documentary material can be included directly.
- Predictable playback: Every player receives the same recorded timing and composition for a given clip.
Where FMV creates costs or limitations
- Storage: Video files consume installation or streaming space, especially when multiple language tracks or branch variants are included.
- Decoding: The game must support reliable video playback on the target hardware and handle interruptions, seeking, and synchronization.
- Fixed framing: The camera cannot automatically recompose around a player who stands somewhere unexpected.
- Continuity: Differences in resolution, image treatment, character model, or clothing can expose the transition from gameplay to video.
When scripted 3D is advantageous
- Continuity with play: The same world, characters, and lighting pipeline can carry across the transition.
- Current-state awareness: The scene can use player customization, triggers, artificial intelligence decisions, and world changes.
- Seamless transitions: A camera can move from gameplay into a cinematic without loading a separate movie.
- Reusable assets: The authored scene can draw on game models and animation systems already in the project.
Where scripted 3D is harder
- Animation robustness: Characters need to avoid foot sliding, clipping, and broken contacts across different positions and states.
- Camera and collision: A runtime camera must behave acceptably around geometry and player movement.
- Artificial intelligence and branching: Responsive actors require systems that can adapt without losing the intended dramatic timing.
- Performance: Rendering the scene competes with gameplay for CPU, GPU, memory, and frame time.
Accessibility is required for both formats
FMV and scripted cinematics can carry essential story or navigation information. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 111 recommends an optional audio-description track that explains essential visual information and context in full-motion videos and other in-game scripted cinematic events.
When a separate audio-description track is unavailable, an accessible transcript should include more than spoken dialogue. It should identify important actions, facial expressions, non-speech sounds, and other visual information needed to understand what is happening. Captions cover audible speech and meaningful sounds; they do not automatically describe a silent gesture, a character entering the room, or a visual clue that directs the player.
The same principle applies to a real-time scene. Its visuals may change with player state, but essential information still needs an equivalent description or transcript that users can access without relying solely on sight.
Common misconceptions
“FMV always means live action.”
No. Live action is one FMV format. 2D animation and prerecorded CGI also qualify because the game is playing a recorded video rather than rendering the sequence in real time.
“Every cutscene is FMV.”
No. “Cutscene” names the cinematic or narrative role. The cutscene may be a video, a real-time engine sequence, or a scripted event that keeps the player in control.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
“Scripted means interactive.”
No. A scripted event can follow a fixed path from beginning to end. Interactivity requires runtime decision-making that changes motion, timing, actions, or outcome in response to input, artificial intelligence, or world state.
“A better-looking scene must be a video.”
No. Runtime lighting, higher-quality assets, and cinematic camera work can make an engine-rendered sequence look different from gameplay. Conversely, a compressed FMV file may look less sharp than the game around it.
A practical decision rule
If the priority is a fixed performance, filmed talent, or an image that would be impractical to render on the target hardware, prerecorded FMV is a strong fit. If the priority is continuity with the current game world, player customization, or responsive behavior, a scripted 3D sequence is usually the better fit.

For players, the shortest reliable test is to ask: are these frames being decoded from a recording, or rendered from game assets right now? That answers the FMV-versus-scripted-3D question even when the scene is called a cutscene, looks cinematic, or combines both techniques.
